This video is great! I used to make my dog's food when she started having seizures with store bought kibble. I would often let the grandkids help and I let them taste it too. One day I asked them what they wanted for lunch. Their response was DOG FOOD! LOL!

I know it's controversial, but when my sweet Australian Cattle Dog got bad allergies, I tried raw chicken and veggies. Only, he preferred the veggies cooked. So he ate chicken leg quarters, and ground beef. (This was years ago when ground beef could be found on sale much cheaper than today.) He loved it. His skin condition cleared up entirely, and he loved to eat his meals. I made vegetable dishes, sometimes cooked in chicken broth. And a small amount of rice or oatmeal sometimes. Our vet was thrilled! But, another vet I have spoken to is dead set against giving dogs raw meat. My sweetie is ten years gone, now, but I know I made his life better on homemade food. And it's a good skill to have.

I have a friend who cooks for 5 dogs and 7 cats (numbers can fluctuate), all strays. She gets organic meat from a farmer, and every Saturday she cooks for the critters. She shares the house with her brother, and she says they eat hotdogs while the good grub goes to the critters. But she says it saves a fortune in vet bills. Has anyone else noticed that vets used to be caregivers to animals but have now turned into an industry to cater to pampered pets. Or pampering owners.

Pro tip: sardines are cheaper then most other fish but they're nutritionally similar to salmon or tuna and are packed with omega fatty acids, and if you get the ones packed in olive oil you can dump that in their food too for even more healthy fats, and since sardines are lower in the food chain (lower trophic level) they contain a fraction of the mercury. I did that with my rottweiler every day for a few weeks in summer and by fall the first rains beaded off her like water off a ducks back and made her coat soft unlike the typical coarse coat of a rottweiler

@@MaNkYmInX yeah. I'm weird and when i get back from the gym at night I'll often want a lazy, high protein meal so I often just eat canned sardines with hot sauce on toast with some side dish(es) to fill out the meal. The whole time my dogs will just stare at me waiting for their cut and I'll often give them some of the oil or some of the fish and they love it. Super healthy for them too since not only is olive oil healthy for them but oil fish like tuna, sardines, and salmon are some of the healthiest foods on the planet in general. Just dumping some in their kibble turns it from meh to a delicacy as far as dogs are concerned and they'll attack that kibble that gets coated in the olive oil-sardine juice like it's fine dining and the fish will disappear the second it hits the bowl. They're also really cheap, 1 can is easy to divide among multiple meals by adding it to their dry food and it costs about as much as wet dog food, so super cheap. I pay like $2/can at Costco for a fairly high quality sardine packed in extra virgin olive oil which is less then a similar amount of the cheapest tuna or salmon and it's like a dollar for a cheap sardine packed in soybean oil or canola oil. Fun fact there's a percentage scale they use to indicate how digestible a protein source is and to show if its a complete protein or not with 100% being breast milk. Sardines and some other fish along with eggs are some of the only foods to go above 100% on that scale while few vegetable proteins like soy get above like 70% and even a lot of meat scoring below 100%.

With my last dog I had to give up guacamole for her. Since she gets the last bite(s) of whatever I'm eating and guacamole gives her the worst gas (she'll get up and leave the room a minute before you smell it) in the world. It's been 7 years since she passed and I still order my burritos and tacos 'sin guacamole' from the taco shop. Sorry, just had to share.

Common sense tells you to remove the bones for the animals to consume the food safely. Save the removed bones and cook them with vegetable scraps and freeze it. Drain it, strain it and freeze it for cooking for yourself. Saves buying the store bought chicken broth, etc. Raised 6 kids on the cheap, none of them ever died from starvation. When you don't have money to blow, you improvise.

Got our little dog when she was 6 years old, at the pound. Normally just gave her kibble and a little human food. She is 16 years old now with no teeth (small dogs generally have mouth issues). Decided to make her food. Went over everything with the vets and now she's got such a pep in her step and looks very svelt. Heavy on the chicken, with some veggies (darker the veggies, the more gas it will give to your pet), all pureed into 2 cup servings and frozen till needed. 1 batch lasts approx. 30 days. Cooked chicken, (heavy - but leaner cuts, since dogs don't do well with too much oils and fats), Canned pumpkin, Sweet potatoes (baby food - saves time), Frozen peas and carrots, Frozen green beans and already cooked rice as a filler. She eats this every day and not once has she turned up her nose. Also started making just chicken and low salt broth as a puree for the cat, too (the little diva) - mixed in with her wet food. She demands it every evening now. Hope this helps.

It's really easy to do this in the instant pot ! I have one designated just for dog food . P.S. you can add the bones back in the instant pot for another 15 minutes and pull out and they crush very easily between your fingers ,leaving no sharp parts of the bone then put everything back into the instant pot chicken, veges. and bones and cook for another 12 minutes . Good for the dogs with the bone marrow and you can use some of the bones for bone meal in your garden.

I stopped feeding my dogs any type of commercial dog food last October, and this is how I do it as well-but I do add cooked lentils along w/ everything else, and they have never been happier or healthier, and I save $$$ by not buying the expensive dog food-which is killing our pets! Chick peas is another protein you can add into the pot as well. I would love to see more dog food recipes to see what other combos you make for your pup. Also, in my area, our local meat market sells 1lb pkgs of 'hamburger' made specifically for dogs w/ organ meats, and so much more-they love when I make hamburger veggie stew with this and the liver! I make a new batch weekly, and they know what's coming when I get out their cooking pot and stay right near me the whole time-their menu changes weekly as well.

I have a 14 yr old Labernese. She is 75 lbs with no health problems and I think it's safe to say it's cause of how I feed her much like Larry. For a dog that was only predicted to live ten years and at least already have hip and joint problems, it has really made a difference between her and my past dogs that I was too ignorant to feed this good. What little bit more it costs is more than worth it.

That's really great. My wonderful DJ has ventured beyond the veil, and now he's only in my thoughts and dreams. He was a small Chihuahua, less than 14 pounds but he had canine epilepsy and his dental health wasn't as good as it should have been. The dog food l got him was bothering his teeth, even though it was made for small dogs, so l started making homemade dog food for him especially. Because he was having such a hard time eating the dry dog food, he had dropped weight and this helped put weight back on him. Long story short, l found recipes online to make it myself. I lived in El Paso at the time and didn't get rides to go shopping like l needed. When l did get there (at Food King, cheap meat prices, just have to pay attention), l got whatever meat was cheapest and cooked it will brown rice, cans of mixed veggies and whatever veggies l needed to use up. Most of the time, what l made food with was pork. I got the best deal from that. And you're so right, no person or animal should eat the same thing day after boring day. I miss him so much and would do anything to still be cooking for him. Had he lived one more month, he would have been 14 years old. He died on the day of Christmas Eve and that day will never be the same for me ever again. Peace 🕊️

Should mix in a little dry dog food right before serving. The crunchy stuff is what helps keep their teeth clean. My dad did something very similar with our dog(s) when I was a kid growing up. It's "waste not, want not". No sense in throwing away extra produce or protein when it's getting towards it's best buy date and you know you're not going to use it if you got a dog or a cat sitting right there. Besides mixing in a little dry dog food my dad would always crack in a raw egg and mix it in as well if we happened to have them.

I feed my dogs only beef with liver and some offal like pork lung and occasionally chicken liver and eggs. Their fur is the shiniest it has ever been and my old dog got her pep back in her step. A few months ago I caught her doing zoomies in the back yard. ❤😊

luckily cats are fairly easy. They thrive on a raw meat diet and they need 95-99% of their diet to be meat so a bunch of organ meats mixed together with some canned sardines is a great cat food with the occasional bit of pureed or finely chopped healthy vegetable like kale, spinach, pumpkin/squashes, peas, or cooked oatmeal. Cats in particular do better on a raw meat diet since there are some key nutrients that are destroyed in cooking so even if you have to cook some of the meat having some raw helps. You want the fish for the omega fatty acids but some finely ground flax seed mixed with their meat can work too, but canned sardines are cheap and better for them. If you ask some butchers even have a pet food mix they sell that's just a bunch of random organs mixed together. Liver in particular is great but should be mixed with other organs since it's got a high amount of vitamin A that can be toxic if you give them too much.

For snacks they love raw carrots or Charlee Beats from Trader Joe’s, and they always have air dried Lone Wolf Ranch premium dry available if they want to crunch them. Thank you for this video, I think more people should try to cook for their dogs if possible.

Kudos for making this video! I made my cats food for years while living overseas, where I couldnt get high quality food. With cats, you may have to add special cat vitamins to be sure they’re getting enough of everything. My cat’s favorite was lamb, rice and spinach (okay, truth be told, he would have skipped the spinach, but I’m the parent here). Now my cats get high quality kibble plus raw shrimp instead of wet food. Ounce per ounce, costs less than fancy feast, doesn’t smell, and its real food instead of canned erasers!

Good for you Sir taking care of that pupper. They are the highlight of our lives. Almost better than our kids. Sorry, not sorry. Love my five kids to death but my pets? Wow that's all I can say.

I may care more about my cats than most of my immediate family. Up for discussion if that says more about me or them. 😂

Yup a profound statement... If I wont eat it... I dont expect a pet in my care to eat it. I adore dogs and cats ... dont have any of my own but I live with and care for a few. I am told I spoil them... but I feel it to be only fair to give them food I would eat. I adore them ... why give them anything less. This recipe is classic, yup.. I would eat that. May need salt and pepper for myself... but such as this Bentley ( the dog I live with) LOVES this. Salmon for the cats... when I can they are all over me for over a week. lol.

I LOVE another creator promoting not feeding kibble. It's gonna make your dog so much healthier. The only things I would change is no rice and no potatoes this includes sweet potatoes. They really aren't digested very well. You can also add different organ meats even brains which is a great secreting organ for dogs. Otherwise great job bringing awareness to a much better alternative.

Might need to get a non slip pad for the doggy too so she's not chasing it around the kitchen

I am slightly disappointed that this video did not cross-over with the Eating on a Budget series... $20/week for food sounds like a good deal.

Animals need some dry food. Wet food only, causes tartar to build on their teeth. If large flecks of tartar are swallowed, urinary tract can become blocked and possibly inflamed / infected. Dry food keeps tartar from building up

Man. I'd remove the gristle and skin, then switch out the sweet potatoes for human food (normal potatoes) and eat it myself!
