Homemade dress transforms from ball gown to butterfly

Ivy Thompson designed and made this dress without any previous sewing experience. The gown uses a snap and cord to keep the sleeves on and easily transform into a sleeveless butterfly dress.

Simply an artpiece.The conception of the outfit is wonderful. I define art as looking at a created piece and it speaks to the viewer's soul enriching his thoughts. When you twirl from a "conformist" ballgown into a "nonconformist" free flying monarch butterfly is inspirational.

She absolutely does have a background. She is discounting her grandmother and mother.. in other words, she DOES have a background, just not one she had to pay for or with a fancy school name attached. Its frustrating how modern society discounts home education. This young woman (the one in the video) is going to school in order to get that "preferred background", and relearn part of what she figured out on her own. I guess she thinks she can also play up her skills, but she did it very badly.

Ida L I'm pretty positive they're referring to the description in which it says "without any previous sewing experience", not to what she said in the video. Nonetheless, learning a craft from your family instead of teachers doesn't mean there's no background. You can't sew a dress like that with no previous experience OR background in sewing, trust me.

Just a note from someone who created many a "Quick Change" costume , sew drapery weights into the hem of :transformation : it assists in the speed of the change . Beware though these weights are usually made from lead! Working on cheap to no budget costumes I used fishing weights from wally world , lead is a soft metal that can be hammered into flat pieces if needed !

She didn't design it, and she didn't have to 'figure it out.' William Ivey Long designed it, there are videos of him discussing exactly what she did on the dress. She did a good job making a copy of a Tony winning design and the monarch dress by Seattle designer Luly Yang. She didn't invent anything, and she doesn't need to be acting like she did.
