I built this electric furnace out of a old paint bucket , I covered the inside with a refractary material ( 1/2 plaster and 1/2 sand). The heating elements are from an electric stove top.

Dear god man, if you're going to use exposed electric heating elements, at least have an earth line attached to the bits of metal you touch, such as the outside of the bucket, the lid and the crucible.

@scaryballoonfish8989
@scaryballoonfish8989 7 жыл бұрын
Actually it is not cheaper. Uses a lot of electricity also higher risk of getting shocked to shit.
@PrivateNexus36
@PrivateNexus36 7 жыл бұрын
But you must also understand tat electricity at this scale is not that expensive. per kilowatt hour, at least where i live, is about $.09 . That means, with a 1200 watt heating element like i have, it will cost me 9 cents. But with a pound of coal, which may last about an hour, it will cost you at least $5 or more and will not do any better accept maybe heat up a bit faster and get hotter. But that is not a problem when all you are doing is melting aluminium and other low temp metals. The shock is not a problem if you are not an idiot. Yes, if you leave the wires open and bare, first of all you are an idiot, and second of all, you may get shocked if you some how touch it. But if you are at least slightly smarter than a chimpanzee you wont have to worry about these things.

I HAVE A QUESTION . IN STEAD OF USING FUEL AS IN PROPANE OR DIESEL . OR CHARCOAL,, BUT THE HEATER COIL THAT IS IN THE BACK OF A DYER. YES THE NICE SIZE BUT DO THE WALLS BUT THEN PLACE THE HEATER COIL WRAP AROUND THE INSIDE. BUT IT IS A 110 . DUE TO YES IT IS 220 BUT 110 GOES TO HEATER AND THE OTHER 110 GOES TO THE MOTOR.. I HAVE REMOVED THE COIL FROM THE UNIT . BUT IT IS ALL READY SET UP. .. WITH THE CERAMIC LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.. .
@hiteckredneck129
@hiteckredneck129 6 жыл бұрын
So you may want to think about how much the element will draw. Most 240V dryers draw 25 - 30A. At 120/125v your looking at a ballpark of 50 to 60A. In that case you need the appropriate wire size maybe a #6 of #4 and probably a subfeed from your electrical panel to a welding type receptacle. Because it is a resistance element the shorter you cut it the less it will draw as resistance heating is self regulating. Try a shorter element @ 120v because the length of the element is proportional to the value in ohms to the element. Half an element is roughly half the amps. Make sure you use crimped connections to your wire and not wire nuts or solder. Most of all stay safe.

CoolKoon how much would it cost?
@CoolKoon
@CoolKoon 8 жыл бұрын
+george macias Unfortunately the guy doesn't mention any power consumption of his improvised furnace. But the 230 V outlet he's using usually can't let more than 15 amps through. That comes out to a maximum consumption of almost 3.5 kW. This means that with every hour of heating he's consuming 3.5 kWh at most. The cost entirely depends on the cost of electricity at your place. But the real question is whether it's cheaper than using a propane furnace or not.....
@MsSomeonenew
@MsSomeonenew 8 жыл бұрын
Well it all depends on your gas and electric prices, in my region a gas forge will set you back about twice as much per hour as an electric would. On top of that a gas forge needs an air outlet which blows a good deal of the heat you need right out the exhaust. But everyone needs to run the numbers for their particular price range.

Scary dangerous!!!!! 240 volts, no earth and steel (conductive) tools and crucible. I wonder what the legal implications of publishing something like this are if someone gets electrocuted. There are not even any warnings about what could happen if you accidently touch one of elements.

+Bored Hands 64 I agree with you. He did go a slightly different route, plus he did not use commentary. I can see how he may have overlooked it. Definitely a thought process worth subscribing to.

Are you saying you did not get the idea of a plaster furnace at all from KoR? If not good on you, if you did just a little shout out would have been cool. Really you went a very different direction, so I understand why you did not mention him, but collaboration is awesome.
