@jimbojones7340
@jimbojones7340 8 жыл бұрын
A "jet" is a stream of a liquid or gas forced out of a small opening. An engine is a machine with moving parts that converts stored energy in to kinetic energy. While this guys creation is not a "jet engine" in the commonly used sense, it is technically a jet engine, by definition of the words.

I don't really like the electronic noise but that is awesome!!!!! put some stuff in the engine. use it as a mosquito killer so that when they fly near the engine will suck them up and destroy them.

Well, there's not really an electronic noise in this one. Maybe you're hearing the brushes, commutator, and maybe bearings, of the motor. That's mechanical noise.

First of all to InterlinkKnight: A beautiful display and teaching model. The N1 gauge is a cool idea. It might enhance the model to also simulate the N2 and Exhaust Gas Temp (EGT) gauges as well. The shroud is nicely modeled and I'm wondering if it is a custom build or from an RC model supply. To all the previous arguments in the comments below. A jet engine is NOT like a rocket engine. Although the escaping exhaust does account for a portion of the overall thrust the majority of thrust is produced by the rapidly moving air through the engine induced by the compressor (or fan). Today's high thrust engines take better advantage of that by allowing a large amount of the compressed air formed in the first stages of the compressor to bypass the combustion chamber. For obvious reasons these are called Bypass Jet engines. The primary purpose of the exhaust is to drive the "low pressure" turbine which in turn drives the front end compressor. The bypass air serves to cool the combustion chamber housing, it pre-cools the exhaust gasses and produces roughly about 80% of the total thrust of the engine. The Navy S-3 has an extremely large intake compressor and sounds like a vacuum cleaner on steroids. It is a jet engine that could almost be called a ducked fan because of the huge amount of air that bypasses the combustion chamber. On the USS Independence I once heard the Air Boss ask (with tung in cheek) "...so, does an S-3 blow or suck it's way around the sky?"
@interlinkknight
@interlinkknight 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. As a matter of fact I do plan making another similar model and is going to have a color LCD display that will show all gauges you mention and some more. But that is for a future model engine. To answer you, I made the shroud by hand using body filler, the same use in cars.

Good job on the model! ...Here is an idea that should get you busy for a few hours: don't have the start switch spring back to NORMAL as soon as you turn on the fuel, but rather only after reaching a certain RPM, say 25%N1. It would be more realistic. If you want to make it even more realistic, don't let it reach the specified idle RPM unless the fuel switch is turned on, otherwise make it turn at only starter RPM (around 20%).
@interlinkknight
@interlinkknight 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right that would be more realistic, but this model I show on the video has no "brain" (micro-controller) so it was imposible to do that kind of behavior. The starter switch is mechanically connected to the fuel control. Actually I am already planning to make another jet engine model that is going to do what you mention, and much more. I learned how to use arduino so now I can program that kind of things. But is going to be for the second jet engine model. I will keep my old model as it is. I always prefer making better models, instead of improving old ones. Same for my car engine model. Not sure when I am going to start building the new jet engine model, because I need a 3D printer. But eventually I plan to buy one and build the model. Is going to have color LCD display, reverse, react more realistically, etc. Thanks anyway for your suggestion.

If you routed the air to a narrow outlet, and moved all the rotating components out of the way, you could actually turn this into a ducted fan motor, that would actually produce viable thrust (not nearly on the level of that of a real turbine engine), but RC planes have used ducted fan motors for years and have worked just as well as standard prop engines, and in some cases, better than them.
