Finally, here are the double gates I made for Sandra's new driveway! They are part welded and part riveted together, then galvanized so they should last a while. They have horse-shoes for handles on the sliding bolts.
Will expertly made the rivet-shoe (I'm sure there's a better term for it than that) and he might make you something too, if you like. Email him here.. will @pengwineering.com

I am always interested in blacksmith work & have seen and photographed all sorts of old gates and benches made using tenons and even dovetails riveted over together with round rivets. The structures are often quite elegant (if a little rusty) and clearly date from a period before smiths had any means of welding other than in the forge, the slots (mortises) you have cut would probably have been made in the hot iron with some form of chisel or sett, and if the smith was trying to retain the full strength of the metal each mortise would have had a ‘swell’ where the metal was pushed aside rather than cut. It is interesting to watch your. ‘hybrid’ approach to the problem using a cnc plasma cutter & stick welder!

Hi Tim and Sandra! Guess what - we were so inspired by your channel and sheep that we bought two of our own. We named them Tim and Sandra. Hope you don’t mind! But it’s actually working as a marketing ploy because whenever people ask “what are their names?” They tell us, “Those aren’t sheep names!” And then we tell them all about your channel and how awesome it is. Anyway. Know that you have two Kentucky Namesakes running around now!!

Looking at the size of the post, I had envisioned 2 7/8" pipes with redwood or cedar pickets with 1/4" x 1" angle iron around the perimeter of the pickets. Those gates are outstanding and lightweight. Excellent work. Depending on what part of the country your in, the foundation is critical. Around here 2 out of every 10 brick and stone mail-boxes are always leaning one way or another gate post etc etc. Around Dallas Ft Worth we have what is termed as expanding soil. No extravagant foundation and its leaning. It really looks great M8.

Nice job. Traditionally rivets and the top and bottom setting tools were made by Blacksmiths. Black Bear forge has some super videos on this which you will probably have no time to watch: Rivet setting tool kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3PGY3h3m5yCpa8 Bottom rivet setting tool: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5WUmombrLRmh7c Still your gates have a timeless elegance and within a little time they will likely appear as though they have been there since the dawn of time. Nice work. To make that rivet backing tool, if you haven't got a cnc mill. Drill a hole to remove some material, then heat it till its red hot and bash some cold rivets into it to forge the exact shape the rivet head. Ye olde technique :-)
