Magnificent finish, you did a fantastic job on the gate. Beautifully done. Pity we could not see it in situ for its full glory. Years ago when I was in Preston, I did loads of wrought iron hanging baskets, the guys were skeptical at first having a female in their workshop but they soon realise I was there to learn and work just as hard as them ,twisting each bar and endless spot welding , painting etc, great fun, very relaxing so I can understand why you was enjoying it. Then we moved onto working on the canal barges, but I did the compound angles etc in the carpentry needed on the barges rather than the metal work needed on them, which was a fun challenge.

Great job well done, there used to be lots of lovely gates like that on the big old Victorian houses here in Liverpool sadly the developers bought them all and changed them all into student housing ripping out all the fireplaces and original features.

Mate! You've got your own sand blasting rig? That is SO cool. I know you don't much like doing the pay jobs ... but I'm glad that lovely old gate was left in your hands for repair instead of someone who wouldn't do it justice. You, Sir, are a craftsman. I actually found it very exciting - there's room for every type of video but I, for one, find these eminently practical videos far more enjoyable than what currently passes for the majority of smithing videos.

Nice repair. Good to see you put the thought into the surface finish. Too often restorations strip off the age of a piece and defeat the point of repairing old and not just making new. If it looks new, what was the point? Nice gate, good for another 100yrs. :)

Good effort buddy. The last few weeks I've enjoyed watching your vids and will the next ones you post. Being a Boilermaker myself i enjoy watching people build and restore, bring back to life what some people say is dead but i also know the dangers in a workshop and if you need your trade to make money to survive, put the cover back on your angle grinder or ill have to call you Stumpy😉.

Great video, was luck to serve my time is a engineering factory in the early 90s were they still had welders, platers, fabricators, fitters, machinists, plolishers and a tool room. Hommers ( jobs for oneself) took priority hence why the closed! So meaney guys I work with have a degree but have no know how! The way I see it is I can go to uni at any age they cant go back and get serve there time. Supper to see you work total art

Maximus, I just stumbled on your channel. Genuinely legendary behaviour!! I'm a blacksmith myself who has a huge interest in living off grid. I think I'm probably not too far from you, as I'm in South Wales. If you had the available time one day I'd love to pop over for a cuppa and chat to you about some of your approach to achieving off grid life. Am always more than happy to do some striking or grinding to repay your time if you like. If not......no worries:) Thanks for the great vids and keep on keeping it real;) Genuinely all the best, Rob Hudson

Did you have to make an extra twisted bar? thought there as 3 bars and 2 bits which you made in to 1 but had 5 at the end. Regardless of that love it. Working of metal is just special in a craftsman's hands.

Wonderful, ended up looking great, do you need to use a special rod other than 6010 or 7018 to weld wrought iron? or is it sort of like cast iron where you heat it weld it and cool it slowly
@maximusironthumper
@maximusironthumper 7 жыл бұрын
Nope just standard 6013 on this. By the time this gate was made the wrought iron was nice high quality stuff and I find for arc welding, can be treated much like mild steel. Cast iron is a whole different can of worms!
