Homemade flying La Llorona, aka "The Weeping Woman" prop, mechanical operation.

This is excellent in multiple respects! A couple suggestions you might apply: 1) Use springs to reduce the size of the counterweight. There are loads of options at the hardware store (gate springs and screen door springs, for example; maybe cannibalize an old "chest expander" no one's using) that will supply some of the force, and you can fine-tune the system with less weight(s). You have a lot of options that will make it easier to set up and move around: Use multiple springs. The springs can also be adjusted (e.g., different angle, position along the arm, etc.). 2) Try the "park" setting on the wiper motor. If you pair it with a motion detector as a trigger, she looks like a static prop from a distance but flies into the air when someone approaches. It's much more threatening that way. That said, she's absolutely awesome! Really incredible work.

Thanks. It really takes a lot of trial and error to get the correct weight distribution for this setup. I first had a bucket attached to the chain, so I could work out exactly how much weight I needed. I just added more weight to the bucket till it was perfect.

That is a really really nice prop, great job. I was thinking though that if it got wet it would totally throw it out of balance. I’m just getting into prop building and already storage space is becoming an issue

I usually don’t run this prop if it’s raining hard. I made it so I can easily remove the body and bring it inside if I want to. If it did get a little wet and added some more weight, I can increase the voltage to the motor, by adjusting the speed controller.

This is awesome (like so many of your props). How did you set up the "lady" so that she pivots as the bar rises to remain always looking straight ahead? Many thanks for sharing this stunning prop. Do you have plans to cover the wiper motor? In the UK it constantly rains heavily throughout october and the motors/electrics need protecting from the elements. Best wishes.

Got everything built. Struggling with getting motor to pull it around. Moved up to bigger motor still struggling.

@@monsoonrevolution the 2 bar mechanism needs to be almost balanced in weight, at the pivot point. Hang a heavy duty bucked at the rear where you are going to mount the weight . Add weight to the bucket until the mechanism is nearly balanced. Remove the bucket and attach the correct amount of weight to the rear with a chain. Being nearly balanced, alows a small motor to pick up such a large prop and mechanism. I have probably around 30 pounds of weight on my prop.

We just turned it into a pneumatic. pilfered some parts from past props. I needed to control it a bit more and added a trigger with Mp3 sounds to it as well. Should have pics soon. Its amazing!

The weeping women prop itself is probably around 10 pounds. But, when you add in 2, 8 foot square aluminum tubes, with pvc slid inside, for more strength, and the heavy steel piece on the top bar, that is a substantial amount of weight to lift. The weight needs to be very close to balanced, on both sides of the pivot point.
