We take pride in being self sufficient in all aspects of our lives so we make our own freeze dried hunting meals with a Harvest Right freeze dryer machine. Thank you for this video! I am the chef of a regional food bank, and we were gifted with four of the large Harvest Right freeze dryers...our intent is to develop freeze dried meals for our unhoused clients. What foods have been a challenge to freeze dry? Is there anything in your experience we should avoid or things that you find are particularly good (texture & ease of rehydrating)? Ours will be delivered soon, and I can't wait to experiment with them...I find myself binge watching videos like yours for inspiration & information!

We have noticed large meat chunks dont seem to rehydrate all that well. We just chop them up small and dont have any issues. Oily foods also don't freeze dry all that well. Stew and soup are great because if you add too much water to rehydrate its not as big of an issue. Good luck with your freeze dryer machine and thanks for the feedback!

I just purchased a large Harvest Right. I have put it off for years. One way to help recoup some of my $ and help other's is I am going to freeze dry their food. I have a friend who is an avid backpacker. He's looking for meals that will rehydrate with regular (not hot) water as he doesn't want to always bring his jet boil. Can you just add regular (not hot) water and eat the meals? Obviously, they won't be hot/warm.

@Linda Mickel I have not tried using cold water but it should work, it just might take a little longer to rehydrate. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your freeze dryer!
