What's cool about this is I had the same idea a few years ago but never got further than balanced equations that said it should be possible to produce enough hydrogen with lye and aluminum to run a small motor. So now I have a real world example to see! On a side note- the lye does act like a catalyst and regenerates itself until it absorbs carbon from the air (CO2) or aluminum impurities creating non-reactive sodium carbonate. The aluminum basically reverts back to it's natural form of Aluminum Oxide so if washed of lye isn't really much of a pollutant. There are people like me that might work at aluminum machining shops that might be able to come up with cheap aluminum. The energy density of Aluminum is higher than gasoline on a per liter basis! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density#/media/File:Energy_density.svg Very good work!

If you are interested in buying any products I use, I will list many of them on my amazon page. Thanks :) Click Here- Amazon.com/Shop/ExperimentalFun Many people were asking me if this would run on water so I decided to make a video showing how it would work with Water, Aluminium and sodium hydroxide. Although this does run on hydrogen extracted from the water (H2O), the real main consumable is the Aluminium, but you can often find scrap aluminium for free. Thanks for watching :)

Suggestion, if lime is available (construction left overs), you can add baking soda (Na2CO3) + lime (CaO) + tap water to replace sodium hydroxide. That will generate hydrogen too but is safer and cheaper than NaOH is. Some illustration for one of the former viewers, Aluminum plus sodium hydroxide is highly exothermic, the water filter is to cool down the gas and remove most of the moisture. The carbon filter is to remove the residual moisture. Damp air damages the engine fast, especially when it cools and deposits water inside the chamber.

For accounting purposes, were there any toxic processes to make the fuel or byproducts remaining to dispose of?

The reaction is: 2Al+2NaOH+2H2O>2NaAlO2+3H2 and the engine’s combustion is 2H2+O2=2H2O. Since the engine’s only exhaust is water (ideally, but oil often burns) there is no issue with exhaust. As for the reactor, if the reaction is measured correctly and ran to completion, the only remaining chemical is sodium aluminate, which is corrosive and an irritant. Sodium aluminate is pretty useful though so its not a terrible waste product.

can you calculate the price ratio of sodium hydroxide water and scrap aluminum VS normal fuel for the energy created? If this is actually more efficient I would be surprised
@zdw306
@zdw306 7 жыл бұрын
So how 'fuel efficient' is this? By which I mean how long can the reaction sustain to create the hydrogen gas. Or the rate of aluminum dissolving in the solution. This could provide some insight into if this could be a good alternative in the case of emergency 'hurricane comes through, and no petrol or diesel to fuel anything' Also once the aluminum is dissolved in the solution and it stops going, can you use electrolysis to 'burn' the solution out and leave a dry metallic film or crystal behind that would be a reacted form of aluminum which could be recycled for reuse after some chemical processing

This not an efficient process. 1 gram of aluminum will produce approximately 125ml of hydrogen. The amount of electricity depends on the method used to produce it. A fuel cell is the most efficient. Combusting it to produce steam is the least efficient. Running an internal combustion engine/generator falls somewhere in between.

You can seperate the oxygen and hydrogen without having to use harsh chemicals. Use metal plates that are stacked/held together with with screws/stoppers to keep them seperated, then just hook it up to a battery charger and electrolysis separates the hydrogen from oxygen.

If you consider scap Al as free, you pretty only have to calculate the cost of the NaOH. But how bad is it to flush large qtty of residual NaOH + Sodium Aluminate into the sewer? Should be not too toxic overall... NaOH will be diluted and neutralize very soon and the Aluminate is already used in water treatment to help flocculation... Well way to go I guess!

Yes I can you exactly what happened. The aluminum in the drum is consumed and turned into hydrogen. You used an aluminum container. It was being consumed from the inside as well until the pressure inside the drum breached the side of the container and it split. When it split a huge release of hydrogen went everywhere and combined with the heat and a nearby ignition source caused it to all detonate all at once. Boom......

S1R9A9M9 ran his Briggs 18HP mower engine 2008 on water in carb with the high volts ignition and 10 amps from temporary only battery and then alternator. The load voltage needed was over 1200 volts so he used bare wire so as the high voltage had induction leakage to low voltage side of the S1R coil assembly to raise up the low volts to very high value to push amps through spark plug of 125 ohms. The magnetic field on the ignition wire allowed for extension of spark time to about 34% on time ATDC. About 100 volts necessary to overcome small electrodes of gap, plug resistor, and the water resistance. The plastic tub hanging n side of engine has the S1r coils, accessory spark gap, and diodes. The original relay as used on the cars per cylinder, with inductors also would fit inside tub, but not 100% known. Purpose was to show engine can run with minute hydrogen generated and formation of water vapor pressure aiding process, at lower stroke area of piston. See You Tube videos. Web site shut down.

You should try using gallium to make an amalgamation with aluminum, then recollect the gallium and aluminum after reaction with water, soak it all in acid until it has re-amalgamated. You should have no loss except water. My understanding is the aluminum in the gallium combines with the oxygen in the water to make aluminum oxide, letting loose the hydrogen. The soak in acid removes the oxide layer, allowing the gallium to reabsorb the aluminum. No waste. I think.

Very interesting Experimental fun. I liked how you used an ev motor from a scooter as the starter and generator very creative, what did you use to connect both engine and electric motor together ? Suggestions for your container so that it will not billow out when a lot of pressure is applied, you can put a pressure relief valve along the output line next to the top of the unit with a second bubbler setup and if your interested in storing the available gas you can compress it into an empty 20lbs. propane tank, cut out an old refrigerator compressor that still runs its built to handle gasses of this nature without causing the h2 to ingnite, remember to have a black flow suppression valve in line from a welding gas unit "most farm equipment stores will have them" just incase of a flare better to be safe then sorry. I would love to share some ideas with you if your interested, and thank you for putting this up it brightened my day
@robertkehlerjr.8258
@robertkehlerjr.8258 7 жыл бұрын
almost forgot to add something to my last message... the pressure relief valve will only let enough pressure out and still have enough pressure to operate your engine, also think about increasing the diameter of your line so theres less restriction from the small size ... this will allow you to run a two cycle engine close to 5 horse power without any power restrictions and still have enough extra power when taxing the motor with a load. if your able to get your hands on a good size piece of PVC water pipe say 6 to 10 inches in diameter and 12" long you can cap the one end with an end cap and the other end with a removable screw cap plus you can do your bubblers this way too and have a high pressure vessel to contain your gas, I am not sure where you reside but it would cost around 25 to 30 U.S. dollars to make

I don't have any problem understaning technical documentations etc. And you may believe or not, but you don't need to be old to be IT specialist : ) I'm 16 and i found job few months ago, because i had done some amazing shit and my school promoted it, now I'm working with cryptocurriencies, managing shitload of server, making nodes and coding some shit. Already got few investors to make mining farms. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeea This sound like retarded 16-yo kid imagined world, but it's not xD

Ver nice! try to use a Stirling motor on place of combustion. You will get more efficient result. You will need a fire cooking flame to burn water for the Stirling and automatic valve to lower flames when water is 80 degrees and to rise flames when water is 40 degrees

You need a basket or the like with the aluminium in it to lower into the water and remove if you want to stop the reaction. Also use on a larger 240v generator to attain a higher voltage and current or to just run a motor like a lawnmower engine. Running an 11 watt bulb is insufficient for the trouble. To gain 1.5 or 2Kw of power would be really great.

To anybody wanting to duplicate this experiment: You would want to utilize a METAL reaction chamber in which can withstand pressure (possible improvisation being using a household pressure cooker with minor modifications); possibly grind aluminum to a fine powder with a ball mill (marbels and rolling glass jar for improvisation) and lastly utilize a diy equivalent of pressure equalized addition funnel, allowing precise control over how much and how quickly you add your consumable reactant (which is why I'm thinking ball mill for Al powder). Whatever you do, DON'T do as shown in this video, starting a run-away reaction within a NON pressure withstanding container.. Trust when I say this is a very BAD idea in which you WILL regret. And worse yet, doing so in a plastic reaction container combined with BOTH TOXIC, Flamable and Explosive gases.. REAL bad idea! Even the OP discovered this in his video, and is using a garden hose to add water in attempt to dilute the reaction and get it under control, all the while the Hydrogen gas being produced is escaping out the open cap and into the room with him. I've got a minor 'wiff' of Hydrogen once, and I learned MY Lesson. I had been curious how elemental Lithium would behave coming into contact with water, so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal, and cut off a small sliver (extracted from Lithium AA batteries) and tossed it into the lab sink. It violently bounced around like a drunk psychotic person, and generating gas when coming into contact with drops of water in which had been in the sink. i APPARENTLY got a small whiff, and I couldn't breath, it was as if my lungs and everything was paused, I couldn't inhale, exhale, hard to describe. This type of experiment should also be done inside a fume hood! DIY one can be made from metal shelving and wrapping thick 4mil plastic sheeting all the way around it to enclose it, and placing a box fan on top shell and then venting it outdoors thru a ceiling vent .

Can we make the same setup run by using H2 and O2 produced by electrolysis of water?
@jastrobaron
@jastrobaron 2 жыл бұрын
This setup wouldn't really make sense. You use electricity to separate hydrogen and oxygen from water, then use the hydrogen to power the combustion engine, which then spins the motor, which generates electricity. Wouldn't it be simpler and more efficient to just hook the inverter up to the battery? (not even mentioning a mains power supply) I don't mean to argue, but I don't really think this setup makes much sense. Would it work as an experiment? Probably. Can it be used to do something useful? I don't think so.

How long will it run with the aluminum you have in there and is the aluminum more expensive than the actual gasoline that it's meant to run on? And can you melt down the aluminum oxide that it is converted to so you can reuse it later for more fuel run times plus cost-effectiveness these are what the people need to know if this works then I'll try to run a 9,000 or 12,000 Watt generator off of this system

how long will the chemcial reaction last before you need to replace solution and how much expense is the cost of the chemcial solution compared to ordinary fuel in this setup?
@alloypaulson7520
@alloypaulson7520 5 жыл бұрын
The cost of the aluminum scrap can be negligible, but a massive amount of the cost will get passed onto wear and tear of the engine. It is significantly more expensive than using traditional gas because of the high cost of the lye (NaOH) that gets used up in the reaction. It's a cool experiment, but not yet practical. There are ways you could reduce costs, such as finding a way to simply expose pure Al to water, producing aluminium rust and hydrogen gas, but I can't think of a way to do that except for keeping the aluminum molten. But combining molten aluminium and not just water but simply moisture in a mold has lead to many foundry explosions and fatalities.

Its also working with pipe cleaner, water and aluminium. But this is not very efficient and dangerous, the reaction between sodium hydroxyd generates very much heat so the content of the reactor can boil over an the pressure can cause an explosion of the container.

Wonderful how long was it before the Aluminium exhausted the caustic soda... when I was a kid I did this to fill Balloons, not exactly efficient, even if it does work. Would be simpler, cheaper and safer to use standard 2 Stroke fuel.

Hi, I was wondering if you added a 2nd water container and ran the generator output voltage to it to produce a hho output, you should be able to run the engine on that solely after the aluminum is used up! Basically run the power to a hho generator inside the 2nd water bottle!

@silviuivanov1988

Yes. 1- adding an asynchronous motor (It will be a much better generator and you may evan power an Xbox, TV and microwave) 2- using a car engine you can put the hydrogen in the air intake and ajusting so that the air is more than the fuel (car engines are 4 stroke so oil will go seperatly) 4- bigger reaction chamber but a wood gasifier or bio digester would be better

why charge a battery? might as well just store the hydrogen. thats an easier way to store the energy. for energy storage they already use electrolysis to filter hydrogen and oxygen from water to burn later in a fuel cell when electrical energy is needed. it would just be a waste of power to convert the energy once more.
@retovath
@retovath 7 жыл бұрын
jort93z do you know how tiny H2 is? If not, it's really fucking tiny. It's small enough that given 72 hours of time, it can seep through most metals half an inch thick by diffusion of H2 molecules between atoms in a metal's lattice.

The bypass valve needs to be AFTER the bubbler not before it. When you ignited the excess Hydrogen gas you risked a blow back of flame to the generator tank. The bubbler is there to prevent that.
@ExperimentalFun
@ExperimentalFun 7 жыл бұрын
This bubbler isn't for preventing flashbacks, Its there to filter out the water from the condenser. The steam that comes out of the reaction chamber condenses into water inside the condenser and the bubbler catches that water so that it doesn't get into the carbon filter. The bubbler also causes back pressure and restricts gas flow, I have the bypass valve before it to relieve pressure if the reaction starts getting out of control. If i did have a flashback I think most likely it wouldn't make it past the condenser because it has so much water in it that it acts like a bubbler, but I shouldn't get a flashback in the first place because I wait long enough for any oxygen to be out of the system before I light the gas, I also wear safety protection , but regardless hydrogen is dangerous and so is this reaction in a closed container, this whole setup isn't really safe and I don't recommend anyone try to recreate it, it was just a proof of concept experiment for educational purposes only.
