Thanks for this idea, way better then cardboard. Made one out of plain picture frames that has no outside frame. Taped the backing parts together for the floor mat instead of throwing it away. My hamster loves her play time out of her cage.

I've been looking every where for a decent playpen for my hamster and all I found was cardboard ones really. This is a great idea and the best part is I can use it for my hedgehog too.

I use these playpens all off the time. Just be sure to watch for any chewing on the tape. Some hamsters are big chewers :)

this video is very informational, i consider doing it but instead of glass, I will go to home depot and buy plexyglas because it is lighter, and less brittle

Plexiglas is a better material for this. You don't want it too light because a hamster can nudge it up at the bottom and slip through. That's one of the problems I had with cardboard :)

+Guinea Pig For guinea pigs you can use wire grids used for cube shelves. Guinea pig owners use them to make "C&C cages". They work well for playpens too. They're much safer than glass and probably cheaper :)

Wow great videos... I was thinking of getting the critter trail fence but did you say you hamster crawled over the fencing? How did he climb so high?

My Syrian hamsters had no problem climbing the CritterTrail fence. My dwarf hamsters cannot climb over it so the CritterTrail fence should work for dwarfs unless you have one who is a really good climber. I've seen another wire fence by a different brand that appears to be good for Syrians. It's by You&Me and It's sold at Petco and Petsmart. This brand makes a taller fence with no tube attachment. My Syrians could climb over the CritterTrail by putting their back feet onto the lower crossbar and stretching up high enough to grab onto the top crossbar and pull themselves up and over. Snickers was a small yet very strong Syrian hamster and Ginger was a very large Syrian hamster so that is why they could climb over so easily.

What dimensions are the picture frames? I got 8x10 but it seems a little smaller than yours.

Mine are 8 x 10 as well. You can make the glass portrait so that it's 10 inches tall. The dollar store sometimes has 11 x 14 which would be even better :)

I got my glass from the dollar store so I paid $1 for each one. Plexi glass is a better option. I found some plexi glass online for almost as cheap :)

I made a wall using pieces of wood and metal hinges. I don't use it because I don't like how it looks and it's a little too heavy for me to set out and then put away each time. It could work well for a hamster like yours who chews on everything. I made it similar to the one in this video but instead of tape I used hinges screwed to the wood to make an accordion folding wall. If that's not something you can do, you can make a playpen out of cardboard. The best design has cardboard on the bottom to protect the floor and to keep hamsters from slipping under the side walls. Cardboard is very light so hamsters can slip under a wall made like this one in the video if it's made of cardboard. Go to HoppingHammy on KZbin and search "playpen" to find her cardboard playpen with the cardboard bottom. Maybe that will work for you hammy :)

I supposes a much bigger size would be needed for pet rats... if this will even work. I'm considering a pair in the future. Not sure yet on that. Definitely want a pair of dwarf hamsters though someday. My last (and first hamster) was when I was a teen to young adult. She lived a good long time (I never kept track exactly how long) but she had a long life and I definitely want them again someday. I just love all the little critters. Mice, rats, hamsters, bunnies, guinea pigs. You name them. Even lizards and snakes, frogs and turtles!

I don't think this will work for rats. They could easily climb over. I don't think I have ever seen a playpen for rats so I can't recommend anything. I understand your love for little critters. I love them all too but rodents especially :)

I don't have favorites. I love all the little fur-bearers and scaly and feathered ones. If I had faves it would be Horses and dogs, which are both too expensive for me atm. Even my cat is too much ( I have two and one needs a surgery that I'm going to have to do a go fund me for).

Thank you! The glass pieces are from picture frames I got from the dollar store so they were $1 each. The duct tape was about $4 and took one roll to make one playpen wall. I'm a about to do another video update on the playpens to show some slight changes such as adding velcro. If you have carpet you will need a mat underneath because hamsters like to try and dig. I have a video on making a mat for it. These walls are glass so be sure to cover the glass with clear packing tape which is about $3 a roll. The tape will keep broken glass from going anywhere if it breaks. I'm going to do a video to show how I made them. Thank you for watching and commenting :)

I think that it's too low for guinea pigs. Look up C & C cages. They are made from wire grids. You can use them to make cages and playpens for guinea pigs :)

+Renee Ma Some hamsters are jumpers. It's normal. You will need to be extra careful when holding her. They don't realize how far from the ground and they can't see very well so she might jump and fall too far.

Put the bitter Apple spray on it that's originally for dogs, but it works perfectly safe for hammies as well. It worked for me :)

I like the bitter apple spray suggestion (Thank you, MyLifeJourney) If that doesn't work then I would remove the tape from the inside where your hamster can chew on it and put it on the outside only. It won't fold up the same way but it will still stand.

Noel Magana My hamster would chew through cardboard or slip underneath it. These playpens attach to my hamsters cages to extend their space. Cardboard playpens are great for temporary playtime :)

Cardboard is great for hamster playpens but I needed something that they can't chew up. The weight of the glass keeps my hamsters from pushing up the wall and crawling under it which is what happened with the playpen I made out of foam core boards. Thank you for the suggestion.

www.guineapigcages.com is an option too for some pre-made ones too... even the smallest still offers enough room for a single guinea pig or pair. I don't know what the bare minimum floor space required for rabbits is though. Probably different per rabbit too. Smaller rabbits like dwarfs needing a specific amount and Lops needing more.

This was years ago. I don’t use hamster balls anymore. I use extra large playpens.
