DIY Folding Carpet Saver Hamster Playpen by Hammy Time

This my new folding carpet saver playpen. I had some requests on how to make my travel bins so this video shows the same process only the tape is strictly on the outside where hamsters can’t chew on it. Some hamsters are big chewers so this would be more appropriate for them.
I labeled most of the toys in the playpen at the end of the video because people often ask about them. The toys in the playpen are:

This is PERFECT for our new (and first) hammy. we playtime on the bed but I'm always nervous he'll fall off, always needing to beat him to the edge. they can be fast, as I'm sure you know. ;)

I used to make something like this for my hamsters, only I didn't use plexie glass. I would save up clear plastic from packages and use that. It gives the same effect but is easier to cut and use and cannot break:)

Thank you very much Hammy Time. I actually made this for my hammys and it is such a great holding area during cage cleaning and playtime. And it was very affordable compared to other alternatives. Quick question though, do you have any trouble with the Velcro wanting to unstick on the back of the duct tape? I have that issue with mine but it's only when collapsing the play pen so I just restick it and it still works great.

I think I used the industrial strength velcro. Not sure, but mine is still staying in place. It could also be the duct tape surface. If it's super slick and smooth it could affect the adhesion. I've had projects where the velcro has come off. You can try cleaning the surface of the duct tape with a little rubbing alcohol to clean it for better adhesion. If that doesn't work then grommets eyelets could secure it, but you would need to put holes in it to place the grommets. I will have to think of ways to secure it better and let you know if I think of a solution. Thank you! 🙂

Much better than glass! Any other alternative suggestions that might be cheaper than plexi? I don't necessarily need to see through it.

+Hammy Time thanks for telling me that I really love your videos. I can't believe you responded to me that's the first time in the KZbinr has responded to me. I think I know where a thrift store by me is so I'll stop by there and see what they have by the way ,I have two rats a rabbit a dog and a cat. I made the hammock that you showed us how to make the simple easy one they ended up ripping up the hammock. I think this playpen will help me because the other one I have they just jump over :) :) ;)

No. Playpens must be supervised and are for temporary holding. If left in this playpen long enough a hamster could eventually chew through the plastic :)

@@faithsfuzzyfriends8689 Unfortunately, no. This works for temporary supervised holding only. The Plexiglas is too thin and held together by tape so structurally it's not secure enough. Also, any permanent cage would require a lid. Hamsters are very good at figuring out how to escape enclosures :)

hi do u think it is ok if i let this be the hamsters cage??as their robo hamsters so i doubt they can climb out and i will put bedding and all their necessities inside??please reply😄😄😄

Unfortunately no. This would not make a good cage because if they're left in it too long they could eventually chew through it at the corners. This is fine to use temporarily as a playpen or for short term use. If you have other animals such as dogs or cats then this would not keep your hamsters safe from them.

Glass would definitely not work for this DIY. Glass would crack and shatter if used this way. It would be way too fragil and heavy. Your best glass option would be to purchase a 40 gallon breeder tank from a pet store. Some stores have $1 a gallon sales. DIYs are often not the cheapest solution.

that's over 30 dollars and time, time and money to make this, you could just get those storage cubes and use those to make a playpen for less than what this costs. No offense at all love your channel, just saying, 6.99 for 5 sheets is expensive, so this is kind of pointless lol

I’m not sure what storage cubes you are thinking of but the wire storage cubes used for C & C cages for guinea pigs would not hold hamsters. Hamsters can slip through them easily. Actually, if cost is an issue you can make a playpen like this out of cardboard boxes. I invested time and money into this plexiglas design because it’s very effective, durable and easy to clean. It protects my carpet from pee and digging. I use this playpen when I have to test their urine. The best part about is that I can easily store it and not take up much space. Totally worth it :)
