This video shows how to make a hinge from a pipe and rod. NOTE: this is a welding project, so you must know how to weld in order to make this. This particular project show how to make a hinge for a trailer ramp. HOWEVER, this hinge can be used for most any other metal that requires one. BTW: Great for smoker and grill doors!

Glad I found you. Retired military instructor, so the rule is "Tell them, Show them, explain it to them, then answer questions to go over the material and make sure they comprehend everything"! I tend to "over build", and make four, even five, hinge tubes for each hinge, whenever there is a chance that people will be standing on a ramp. Two times the safety factor is good!

Phil Crockett excellent video, appreciate your tutorial style. I'm pretty new in starting to do my own projects like this, how do you decide what size of materials to use? Is it experience? I'm concerned about under 'speccing' the build materials but if you over spec then you're wasting money ( which I don't have too much of ) any advice please?
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 7 жыл бұрын
here's an example of my building process.... i'll use my homemade trailer as an example. I first decide the size I want. Then I visited trailer sale lots and took dimensions and pics of the trailers. I studied ever detail, and called trailer companies and researched on-line. I drew a pic of what I wanted, noting material thickness, length, placement, design....etc..... Once I got the basic design down, I started adding (drawing in) my own personal touchs (front hinge gate, extra long tongue, receiver hitches.....ect...). Then I simply bought the materials and took my time putting it together. In short..... I copied the factory-made product, and then added the details I wanted. This process works on most things I build. I always use the factoy-made products as my 'minimum strength' requirement on materials that I would use. I actually used square tubing instead of angle iron on my trailer, which is stronger, and I could run my wires through which protects them from getting snagged in the field. Hope this gives you an idea.

This video saved me some time and money. I bought a carry-on 5x8 trailer a few years ago. But it was very poorly built. I had to re do the wheel bearings and seals. And now the gate hinges. It was not fun trying to replace the barrel hinge style that came on the trailer originally; everything had to be perfectly aligned , and all I have is an old craftsman ac stick welder, it was hard to make things line up perfectly. I found this video and did it with 1/2" round stock, and I think it was 5/8" tube. And it works so much better, and now the gate is removable. Some mower decks used to catch on the old hinges. Now this style, it looks like they won't hit at all. Hopefully, tomorrow, I'll be able to fully test it out. This video for sure earned my thumbs up and a subscribe

I will be using the second half of the video to make my gate removable. Unfortunately my three pins are welded into the outside pets of the hinges but I’m going to use a cutoff wheel and break the weld, slid out old pins and make new pins that are removable to allow me to remove my gate for long hauls and get better mpg. Thank you!

Good video . that means audible narration, Well exposed scenes , tight editing, very nice. Scene and narration matched to show clearly the build.. The hinge made up of three segments two welded to the trailer ,, yes I need that explained to me and one welded to the ramp .. The rod , full length across the back to make the hinges line up and then once in place and welded the rod can be shortened .. Yep, I needed that explanation as well

Thanks for your video. By the whiteish smoke residue and the appearance of your outer pipe it's galvanized. Galvanized materials need to be ground so the galvanizing is gone at the weld areas. Welding galvanizing produces a purplish looking poisonous smoke. It also contaminates and makes the welds very poor. Grind it clean at the welds or don't use use it.

excellent video - thanks for sharing... a quick question... would it not be better to divide the load what whatever might be loaded on the gate in half by using the 2 barrels to support the downward force? Meaning that 1 barrel would on the frame and 2 on the gate (per hinge)? Maybe someone with some engineering knowledge could chime in... either way, great video in terms of nailing the alignment by prelocating with the solid piece. Thanks!

Very good clip! What is the size of your ramp square tubing? 14g - 1"x1" ? ,it looks to me. The reason is I have to make a ramp first. Then hinges like yours, thank you ...PK...North Texas
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 4 жыл бұрын
I truly don't remember the specs on the ramp. What I usually do, is either go look at the trailers on the sale lots, or call a trailer manufacturer to get specs. When I built a utility trailer years ago, those were my 2 main sources of information. It also depends on what you're planning to drive up on it. Hope this helps you out, Peter.

pretty good. not exactly what I need (i need vertical hinges for shed doors) but this is a good idea. I have 2 2.3/4 " pipes, 12' long each welded to 2 angle irons and then that's screwed thru to a 2x6 the length. was thinking of just going into each end with slightly smaller pipe and mounting them to the door frame somehow. . . the bottoms of the doors may need wheels and there's a slight hill as they open, so maybe having the door hinges ride up to close and down a little to open? looking for tips as my dad was an engineer, but I'm half the man lol...

@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 5 жыл бұрын
Good question, Dave! I didn't say, because each scenario may have it's own size to fit the project. What I usually do, once I figure out the general size hinge I need, I find the pipe, and fit it on several rods at the metal store, until I find the one I like. It really is the easiest way to do it. How this helps.

Why did you weld it all so high up on the back plate? When the gate is down you have the two hinges protruding up into the roll-on path you have to clear. The top of the hinges should be no more than flush with the back deck height. That's why many folks also use a a "mount" plate piece versus welding the pipe directly to the gate/trailer

I had this genius idea, that I would be able to fold the ramp inside the trailer. On the backside of the ramp would be 2 carpeted runners that would hold a 14' Jon Boat. An all purpose trailer. This way, I wouldn't have to take the ramp off every time I wanted to haul my john boat. Anyway..... in short.... I have my thought-out reasons for the things I do. Thanks for the critique, Joby.

ya. The funny thing is.... I ended up selling my 14' jon boat and getting a 16' Lowe on a real boat trailer. The great thing about welding, and metal work is you can always re-modify. I have a scrap pile of things I've made that were once useful, and are now waiting to be made into something else. it's never ending fun for me.

@PhilCrockett

Sure! You could do that. I just don't like too much over kill, because of cost. I like to keep as much rod and pipe on hand in my scrap pile. That darn steel it so expensive. There's a lot of things you can now buy already made that cost less than doing it yourself. Thanks for the question / comment. Let me know how this worked out for you!
