Interesting setup. It would have been nice to have a closer look at, and description of, that circular wooden piece that held all the metal conduit in place, for the top tipi opening. Any info?

Laura Michels I know, it's horrible! This is why. We're setting up near a backcountry parking lot, and I didn't know it was "international snow day"! Lol. Usually there is one car there, but on this day, the parking lot was overflowing, a diesel bus parked next to us and a scout group was learning how to snowmobile!

Thank you so much! Yes, we had some unexpected traffic and as the tent was already set up, we just had to do our best. I think Shawn did a great job considering what we were dealing with. (that bus was running for an entire hour, not to mention the snow mobiles coming through constantly). I'm glad you could see past it and still enjoy the video! :) Thank you for commenting.

Question. looks like you have plywood at the top where the poles go through? also appears to be a metal insert where the stove pipe exits? is there a video showing the construction? I really like it. Would like to know more.

When I first joined Facebook (not too long ago) I started to follow Algonquin Park and Camper Christina posted her experience the time she camped out at -42C. At that moment I was hooked, I just had to learn more and that's when I came across My Self Reliance and Joe R. on KZbin. After watching and learning all 3 of you have to offer I went solo camping for 6 nights in Algonquin in the month of January. I'm 55 years young female and I can't wait to go back. I so wasn't ready to come home. I have to tell you I was warmer in my tent then they were in the yurts. Thank you all for what you do, you gave me the confidence I needed to go for it!

Hahahaha! That is amazing that you went to algonquin for 6 nights solo in January no less! Congratulations! That's a huge achievement I would like to accomplish myself one day! Would you mind if I shared your comment?

That is an interesting idea having the plywood ring to insert the poles into. How many poles were used in this tipi?
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 7 жыл бұрын
The tipi has 9 poles. It was planned with 10 poles, 10' x 10' x 10', but the wooden ring would've been too big, 9 seemed to be just the right amount I think. :) Thanks for the comment.

If you do your hobby with nobody, you are never waiting on them.... I do my travel by myself, always someone where I go if I want to hang out with others....it's not like my friends are the only people on the planet. I love the tent, was thinking of something similar, but insuring both layers go all the way to the ground and possibly cheap, harbor freight, moving blankets between for insulation.... (I like to be warm and toasty)

Have you figured out what winter tent system you want to go with ?
@MySelfReliance
@MySelfReliance 7 жыл бұрын
Kijika Life Honestly, I am still preferring cold camping with a bivy or tarp. For my wife and new dog, I'll probably end up making a tent in the prospector style
@highlandtrekker
@highlandtrekker 7 жыл бұрын
+My Self Reliance (Shawn James) I agree...from what I've seen so far stove placement in the tipi style seem to always be centred. The prospector style seem to give more usable space and I've seen some scaled down versions online. As far as solo, a good tarp configuration if it's windy otherwise lean to style with a fire in front. I don't have much experience with actual winter camping so any advise would be welcome !

HI David. sorry for the late reply. I don't receive notificatons on this video. I have had the stove for almost 2 years now, and still love it. It is a bit heavy but works great for the price I paid for it. I just repainted it last month and it is all ready for another season!

Nice Handmade tent. Reminds me of the pyramid style tent Sir Edmund Hillary used. I went winter camping on purpose a number of times in the 70s. Winter camping can be quite a learning curve. Stoves can make the difference twixt success or failure. I've stove camped since 1990. Nice having hot water anytime. Hot grub. Meat spuds gravy eggs bread/biscuits is a welcome sight when coming back to camp.

@allemansratten4281

Nah. Military surplus, Polish army. Its fairly well designed, like 50 yeaes old. You can wear half as poncho. I use my trekking pole to prop it up in the center, and carry a bunch of aluminum stakes (i could just a easily use sticks). Was looking at a tigoat or kifaru folding stove. Figured I'd rig up the chimney out one of the arm holes. Have had people express carbon monoxide concerns. These stoves are expensive so i figured more research was warranted ;-)
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 7 жыл бұрын
LOL a poncho huh? Sounds pretty cool! I pictured a big lavvu. I saw a video today of a girl making a tent out of a tarp. i think I'm going to try this in the summer, well, whenever the snow goes away, maybe June? LOL. Your poncho comment made me think of it.haha

HI Henry, i think you are asking about the green on the tipi at the bottom? If so, it is from fabric land. It was about $15.00/metre. Quite pricey but it looked so nice, I couldn't resist. The info on it is on Shawn's blog about the most recent renos I did to the tipi which included adding that plastic coated canvas. myselfreliance.com/homemade-tipi-winter-camping-guest-blogger-camper-christina/

13 prevail , I would add that anymore, better quality and if not satisfied you know how to change it or upgrade it. Like the skirting she added to the bottom to solve a problem. Sort of reminds me of how things use to be in your great grandparents days and before, if you wanted something you had to make it or find a craftsman to make you what you wanted.
