HOMEMADE Intake Manifold Made From Water Pipe? - 1971 TURBO CHARGED Opel Gt

Жыл бұрын

Over the past couple of episodes we have been shoe horning a turbo charged 2.3 Ford motor in our 1971 Opel GT. With engine and trans bolted in place we needed to address the height of the motor so the hood would close. The factory 2.3 had the turbo charge pipe run over the valve cover so the hood wouldn't close.
I figured a forward facing intake would solve all sorts of problems. The lower intake would allow the hood to close. With the lower intake and the throttle body facing forward, we are able to run an intercooler between the turbo and intake.
More room and more power? That's a win, win for me

@@DDSpeedShop if you decide to upgrade the airbox and you have the space, you could build a reverse header. The Collector could be mounted to the throttle body and each tube would be individual into the cylinders. Of course the bends would have to be very tight. Personally I would just leave it as long as it runs good. It looks good and you have plenty of other projects for us to enjoy.

When I was about 15 yr old in 1965 I got invited over to a guys house not far from my home. He was building a 38 chevy coupe for the Gas Classes drag racing. He had a early Hemi with a home built intake made from flanges patterned off an intake gasket. Oxyacetene welded exhaust tubes came up and crossed over the opposite bank and attached to a box plenum with 8 stromberg 97s ,4 on each side. I was blown away by its looks. Totally wild sticking up at least 12 inches above the Hemi covers. You my friend, are well on your way to HERO STATUS.

I dig it. I made a turbo log manifold out of 2.5” schedule 40 pipe and elbows for my 5.3 lm7 swapped 67 mustang. Hacked up a front sump 240sx ls swap oil pan and got everything to fit in the stock chassis without touching the shock towers. Deleted the heater box for the 3.5” down pipe over the passenger valve cover. Fits under the stock hood. Work with what you got!

I haven’t read all the comments, so if someone beat me to this comment, just ignore me. Anywho… I believe you would have better luck making your intake base, if you cut your holes large enough for the runners to fit inside the hole, and then weld them from the inside. You could do the same if you split the plenum, and then welded it back together. Great content, keep up the fun.
@johnkennedy2505

Don’t forget Dan you can weld from the inside the intake plenum and on the flange side to seal up in between the runners
@t5montecarlo
@t5montecarlo Жыл бұрын
Dan, Very ingenious! If you make the runners longer, you may be able to have access to the bolts from the top, and perhaps the throttle body wouldn't interfere with the alternator. If you remake the manifold again, bolt the flange to something thick so it doesn't warp when welding to it. When you placed it on the lower portion of the intake, it looked like it rocked as though it was no longer flat.

Air, fuel, spark and compression. If it works it doesn't have to be pretty to get there. My old life on sawmill breakdowns with oddball hydraulic pump installs we made many fittings. My dad put a Datsun 240Z engine in a Volvo wagon once. His proud moment was the log intake he built for it. I think it was tube steel if my memory serves me right. He taught us if you build it, make it look like you did it on purpose!

Should have put one of those Pontiac 194.5 4's in it. Good luck finding one. It probably would have fit pretty well in this thing though. I have no idea if what you did here is right or wrong. I can say though that you looked at it and said "i need air from over there to go over here and fit in this space" Is it the best performance or best idea? Who knows? You got out there and made the thing work though. Old fashioned hot-rodding here. The way you just make things work is one of the reasons I watch. I wouldn't call you a hack either, you're a guy out there figuring out what works and doesn't and posting it for the world to see. I'm rooting for you on this build - I want to see this thing be a fun little driver.

I thought it looked great!! If you should need to remake it, use 4 garden tractor pipes with elbows. Straight up 90 over, c same receiver, squished in a pipe vice or something equivalent, This would give you the elongated width to hook up, pipes come straight over. Height is adjustable width adjustable, and it looks like it could even be shorter. Maybe short enough to clear the Alternator. Just a thought. Love the show.

Hell that was back in the 70's, I traded a buddy of mine a 4 door AMC Rebel for that Fiat, and "we" cobbled together a intake and exhaust manifolds for it out of water pipe, steel pipe. Hey, by damn it worked and the sob ran good too. That Fiat was a 4 door, suicide doors and 4 speed on the column or tree, whichever. It had a little overhead cam 4 banger in it.
