Homemade kayak handline fishing reel. Mackerel catch and cook

Kayak fishing in Ireland. I make a DIY kayak sea fishing hand line, using simple tools, which I can carry in the pocket of my buoyancy aid. If you have ever wondered about hand line fishing from a kayak watch on. I test it out by catching some Atlantic mackerel and cooking them on the beach. A hand line might be dangerous if you have very large powerful fish in your area.

I have been waiting patiently Joe. There is a great book on the English longbow and ancient archery written by Rodger Ascham in 1545. The book is called Toxophilus. He says that ash wood makes the best war arrows. I was often tempted to split out some ash and whittle it down to arrows but never got off my behind to do it. Have you ever split out arrows like that?
@MrOtterdude
@MrOtterdude 6 жыл бұрын
Vinnie- I just started back in on Toxophilus. I got it as a free download about a year ago. I've never split boards for arrows, but my favorite wild-growing shoot arrows are black ash. I also like red osier. In my video, I use red osier, as that was the choice of local Indian tribes.

A treat at the end with the mention of Malcolm Douglas (one of my childhood heroes) and some proper cooking. I was relieved to see a bed of coals and not the usual nonsense of waving the fish on a stick over live flames. To this day the best fish I have ever had was a river catfish cooked this way by my Aboriginal Aunt Ruthie. Mind you she didn't gut it - you ate it off the bone on the coals while the second side was cooking. Great stuff Vinnie!

I have spent hours watching Malcolm. The first time I saw him he whipped out a spear and woomera and speared a mullet. Lets just say I was hooked. I was sad when he was killed. Coals are the only way to cook. Thanks for watching 👍

While looking at this video a great idea sparked to mind if ya had a lathe and a 4mm steel rod you could turn a spool put the rod through the middle of your handline wood thing and have a bit of the rod stuck out one side to take a handle kind of like a reel system. Too hard explain but it would work

Beatiful sea and shores wich had seen so brave sailors and fishermen in history. Nice kayak brother, but I wish one day you do a currach out of branches in the woods and a piece of canvas with one of your folders (no forget the blessed water by S.Brendan in the bow). You will do a nice paddle or bulls too, so you can sail with your doggie. Greetings from Uruguay. And mackarel is my favorite fish.

Hello my friend. There was always a large currach in that harbour and I looked for it to show it to you but it was not there. It was the largest one I have seen. The old currachs were made with wicker so I suppose it could be done but I need an experienced sailor to help. We could have a partnership?

Beautiful coast, beautiful music and the fish looked pretty good too. I am jealous, I have just given my kayak away as I have moved inland on the mainland from Ibiza and thought there was nowhere close to kayak, it turns out there are two or three dams that don't show up on Google earth for some reason. What is the kayak you have there? It looks very stable and a nice design. Good to see you getting a day off.
@vinniesdayoff3968
@vinniesdayoff3968 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, and thank you so much. You will have to reinvest some of the profits! The kayak is the RTM Tempo. It is supposed to be the fastest plastic sit on top kayak. It is fairly stable but maybe not super stable. It is a strange kayak. Sometimes it feels a bit tippy but when I have been in rough surf etc it felt stable.
@vinniesdayoff3968
@vinniesdayoff3968 6 жыл бұрын
I meant to say sit on top Chris. I have an old Ocean Kayak prowler 13.5 and it is very stable. Not the fastest kayak but you still get around
@chrisosh9574
@chrisosh9574 6 жыл бұрын
Ah! RTM are good, mine was the RTM Disco sea kayak, that was tippy being very narrow. So that I could use it in a choppy sea, I made a pair of outriggers on the end of a reinforced 40mm x 1.5 metre PVC waste pipe, the floats were made from several layers of the blue Dow building insulation foam glued together and fibre glassed. They worked pretty well, the Tempo is a lot more stable and what I would probably go for if I get another. I like sit ons as they are a lot easier to deal with if they go over, you just have to make sure everything is attached in some way. If you ever fancy making outriggers, I think I have the patterns somewhere.
@vinniesdayoff3968
@vinniesdayoff3968 6 жыл бұрын
I never paddled a Disco but the reviews say they are a bit tippy. I am not really a fan of tippy.
@chrisosh9574
@chrisosh9574 6 жыл бұрын
@@vinniesdayoff3968 I have only been dumped out when trying to surf but I deliberately baled a couple of times to see what getting back on was like after reading reviews. Not that easy in a choppy sea. I made a vynil bag for a counter weight for the other end of the paddle and a rope stirrup for my end. Tie tha paddle across and getting in is easy but not fast. With the outriggers its stable anyway. Luckily I never needed the bag.
