Lenses operates on 5 volt max , anything less than that shall do , but must not exceed 500mA current . Improvising on the length of reflector lense can help focus properly . Good idea for DIY from junks.

That laser diode will see a early retirement. Without a proper driver circuit it will burn out for sure. That resistor as a ballast will not cut it! Laser diodes are very touchy devices . Does not take much to destroy one.
