I made liquid laundry detergent for years. It was such a money saver and we always loved the smell and result washing in cold water with fairly soft water. After almost 8 years of making it, I just didn't want to anymore. I stopped about 10 months ago. After buying the store-brand liquid detergent, my clothes that had been washed with my detergent started coming out much cleaner - which honestly bums me out! I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I love that you are trying this and I can't wait to hear and see your results!

In the future if you continue to make this detergent, put the soap into the freezer for a few hours before you grate it. It will grate smaller that way.

Good tip! I also thought afterward...why on earth did I bother with chopping it down with a pastry cutter? I could've just put it in the food processor with a regular blade and gotten it all down much finer.

@Amy Nix But, it is a good tip to use, for those who don't have a food processor! So still not bad to show in the video! :)

Hi Amy! Have you made a review on this homemade soap? I have been using this type of homemade soap for a few months now and I still love it as much as I did the very first time!

She never bothered to review how it worked.

I've been using homemade laundry soap for 2 years. Liquid and powder. both work fine, you still have to stain treat the clothes prior to washing. Just like any other detergent. I'm allergic to many detergents, that's why I started to make it. Sometimes I make it with ZOTE, or castile soap. I found TIDE bar soap that works excellent too. The Zote and the TIDE bars are good stain removers. Hope you have good results with your batch.

I love homemade laundry soap. I've made it for 5 years now. It's great on acu's. I've used it on cloth pads and have had no problems with absorbency. I've never had any issues with buildup either. I used to use fels naphtha but used dove soap recently... And I microwaved it and made a poster from it. I used to use a scent booster and now I use essential oils. I use oxi booster as well (I don't wear obv so I don't have to worry about the color messing up). I use my soap when I treat my pads before washing them... You can also use a food processor to make your soap finer.

I lied.. Not dove soap... IVORY.

Mix the dry ingredients together using a balloon hand whisk - very quick - then mix in the grated soap using your hands. Balloon handwhisks are exremely thorough at evenly mixing dry powders together. Hulda Clark wrote about using borax - it clings and needs to be removed as it won’t rinse off unless you rinse first using citric acid in the water. I can’t remember how much. I could look it up for you if you want the info. Love your videos.

if i use bar soap other than fels naptha i let it dry out for a few days then put in blender and powderize.

Washing soda is baking soda that has been dried/"cooked" in the oven. If you take your small chunks soap, washing soda and borax and put them into a food processor and you will get a very fine "laundry powder". I have a video of me making it on my channel. I also make my own bars of soaps from scratch sometimes for my laundry soap.
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt5 жыл бұрын
Finely powdered soap may be counterproductive because you want water softeners to dissolve and disperse completely before soap does.

Did you make the DIY laundry soap follow-up? If so, can you post a link. Thanks.

I love making DIY stuff for the house. I sometimes wish I still was using my old washing machine though. I did read my owners manual for my NEW HE machine and it states specifically that if you use homemade soap in your machine the warranty is void. If you have a machine still under warranty you may want to only use commercial detergent (at least until your warranty has expired).

That will be coming soon. I just moved 3,000 miles, and I'm testing it out in soft water (we have a water softener here) to see if I can tell a difference.

Love your videos, Amy! (Especially loved your Soap is Not a Harsh Chemical video - I was a chemistry major in college, so it always drives me bonkers to see people freaking out about the "nasty chemicals") Can't wait to see how the homemade laundry detergent works for you - I've been making my own for almost two years now with a very similar recipe but somewhat different ratios. I haven't had any issues with my machine, my clothes, or my cloth pads...

The chemical thing drives me more insane than when people who are on a diet only buy 'fat free' stuff ... fat in food has nothing to do with your waistline! I've started seeing things advertised as 'chemical free' as well. Clearly they are selling a box of nothing so I won't waste my time buying chemical free haha.

I love homemade laundry soap. for me I don't use it for my whites anymore because it does make them turn yellow. however my colored clothes are the cleanest I've ever had.

You should add biz stain remover to your homemade laundry powder that will keep your whites white and your colors bright,and it has detergent in it

I am very interested in how this works out for you. Do you have hard or soft water? I would love to use this for my home. I'm in the process of swapping all of my products (household, beauty, etc) over to cruelty free and am considering making videos as I go through it.
@amynix26328 жыл бұрын
We have moderately hard water here. So far, I've done two loads with it, and because of the high water softener content of this mix, my clothes were SO soft and bouncy. I haven't used it long enough to determine whether the soap scum will build up or get washed away, yet, but I'm really impressed. So inexpensive in the long run if it works out, and I can be confident that I know what's in it and what I'm putting down the drain.

This is kind of a random question for your video but I've only had two periods so far but the have Ben 21 days apart and I got a tracker app and it says my next one will go through the first week of school and I'm getting a mentral cup but I'm scared because I'll have never used a cup or had my period at school do you have any tips?
@amynix26328 жыл бұрын
Yes. When using a menstrual cup for the first couple of cycles, wear a pad or liner as backup until you have developed confidence in your cup use. Once you're comfortable with the cup, you will be confident in whether to go without a liner, but the first couple of months you're using one...wear a pad as backup when you go to school so that you aren't constantly worrying and nervous about whether or not it will work/leak/etcetera. Okay?

IMPORTANT QUESTION ---- PLEASE SEE THIS: I have PCOS(severe), I have had several ovarian cysts rupture and I have severe PMS, pain, nausea, and cramps bad enough to bring me to my knees during my period.They have me on a higher estrogen birth control so that I can even have a period and I also use disposable pads. I am very interested in trying out reusable cloth pads. Do you think that switching from disposable to cloth will help and of these things? I am desperate, I have begged them for a hysterectomy or even to do an ultrasound on me but they will not because I am not sexually active. I would just like to be able to spend my period without being on muscle relaxers and hydrocodone. Could you please give me recommendations on anything that might even help slightly? Thank you in advance for any help. - Jessica
@amynix26328 жыл бұрын
I don't think switching to cloth pads would address such severe medical distress during your periods. Many people with PCOS and severe dysmenorrhea use cloth pads and find them more comfortable than disposables were, but I am not really qualified to speculate on what effect, if any, cloth pads would have on your situation. I believe you'd find them more comfortable to wear and likely better suited to your flow needs if the PCOS makes yours heavier, but no. They are not a magical cure for such terrible symptoms. I strongly recommend that you find a PCOS support/discussion group on reddit or Facebook to speak with others who have dealt with this level of pain and medical ordeal surrounding menstruation. They will have much better advice for you than I would.

How does this work in a front loading washing machine? Won't it get too sudsy? We have very soft water here. It does sound such lovely powder though. Perhaps I could just use it to do hand washing unless it is OK for the machine wash. We would have to use Borax substitute as Borax seems to be banned in EU. Going to look that up. Yes, it is banned by the EU since 2010. Someone on another site suggested this may be because it can be used in bomb making!!! How true that is is anyone's guess! Another states that the EU banned it because if you ingest half a kilo of it it could kill you! Well, I don't know if this is true but the EU does seem to have many, many strange ideas. I'm so glad we (UK) are now out of the EU.

Ive been told it's not good to wash cloth pads with homemade detergent
@amynix26328 жыл бұрын
I've been told it's bad. I've been told it's the best ever. So...since I can't find anything definitive, only opinions, I've decided to try it and see what happens. :) I will do a follow up after I've really used it for a while. If I see any loss of absorbency or anything building up in my machine or on the clothes, I will definitely tell all about it.

The only people who decide that homemade is bad/destroys clothes or machines are the people taking payments from the Big Soap Companies! The reason we have Soap Operas is because Big Businesses used cheap day time dramas to advertise! The really funny part is that they brainwashed people into thinking bubbles = clean! Wrong! and even funnier: those big companies now make low sudz versions! lol My Machine is almost 18 years old and he has never ever had a hiccup! never met a repairman and never used any of those Big Company chemical concoctions! But I not only make my own laundry soap I actually make the bars that I grate! and you don't need scent! if your laundry has scent when you finish washing it's because it left a scum on your clothes! Hope this helps

I do 2 boxes of Borax, 2 boxes of washing soda, 2 big boxes of baking soda, and 2-3 bars of naturally scented glycerine soap. White soap can leave white residue on clothing, but glycerine soap is translucent and doesn't leave marks. I used to add Purex 2 which is rated a B by EWG, but I have tried to get completely away from unspecified man made fragrances. I adore Mrs. Myers and Caldrea products (same company), but they will not disclose information about their fragrances, so I have moved away from their products even though I enjoy them.

I will say though, than Mrs. Myers is phalate free, so their fragrances are probably relatively safe. If I didn't have three boys simultaneously going though puberty, I would probably still feel very safe using Mrs. Myers!
