Great video man you inspired me to make my own MRE. I’m making my MRE’s based on your criteria in the video. I’m going on a wilderness survival course in two weeks time and will be bringing the home made MRE to test out. Once again great video. P.S can my comment get pinned ?

I work outside for a local tree removal company. I am currently working in the Lawn Fertilizing Department. Every year the owner of the company use to buy Gatorade Powder and water coolers for every truck. The product they replaced the Gatorade with is Liquid IV each truck gets two large boxes of packets you add to bottles of water. It tastes great and the Liquid IV would be a great electrolyte drink for your MRE'S. Great video today.

Just a little FYI: you were mentioning that bone or beef powder was part of MREs and rations as long as there has been an American Military, pre USA soldiers carried something called instant soup leather. It is a soup base that was dried into a leather (think fruit leather) and it could be reconstituted into a quick soup with the addition of jerky and foraged vegetables . It dates back to at least the medieval days. Townsends has done a video on it from the US Colonial times that shows how to make it.

Also, find you a mouse pad for the bottom of your cooker doo dad. There's a gazillion of them out there as giveaways and people toss perfectly good ones because they get "bored " with them. I've used some for pot trivets on a camping trip

Another home run vid. We have used the bone broth powder for over a year, as an additive to homemade stews, chili, or as a drink. We have branched out, due to your influence I might add, into some of the vegan/vegetarian offerings for our meals. Found some that were edible with no lingering after taste. Thank you for sharing your views & findings with us. Continue on. See you on the trail.

I shop at Aldi multiple times a week. Since your video a few back where you said you were going to revisit it, every time I went I was looking for little items that would work. I’m sure you’ve seen these, but they have the small jerky packs, the tuna/chicken salad tins with cracker packs, the precooked rice, small tins of Vienna sausages. I always gravitated towards the trail mix as a good item for an MRE. Glad to see you included it!

Really appreciate you building these MRE's. I do suffer from Celiac Disease, autoimmune disorder that results in negative effects from gluten. If possible, could you create an MRE that would be Gluten Free, due to allergy. Need to avoid wheat flour, barley and rye. This would be helpful. Keep up the great work. Thank you!!
@dadbudgetadventures
@dadbudgetadventures 11 күн бұрын
It’s a great suggestion but I have deliberately avoided doing a video on any specific dietary restrictions simply because I don’t know enough about them and would likely get it wrong. I have friends with celiac and they are constantly finding out the hard way how much gluten sneaks into things. My concern is I’d make a recommendation and someone wouldn’t follow up with their own research and they’d end up in the hospital as a result of my actions.

Very interesting video and really hits home with me. I've been a first responder since the late 1980's, and have lost count of the times I went to work thinking I'ld be home in eight to ten hours and it was two to three days before I was able to get home for a quick shower and to change uniforms. After going hungry a couple of times, I started putting packets of chicken, tuna, bbq beef and pork in a duffle bag with clean clothes and toiletries. I added crackers, granola bars and a camping stove along with instant coffee to my home made 72 hour bag (we didn't call it that then, guess we were ahead of the curve). Great work on this, and will be adding your homemade MREs to my load out. By the way, I have access to MREs that are military surplus, and you're are much better.

Something I was thinking, when you're doing the 24 hour MRE kits you should make sure the calorie count is as close to 2000 calories as you can get if not over. and also making sure on the single meal MREs you should be at about 675calories (or 1/3 the total need for a normal person for 1 day) With a good supply of protein and fat on top of the carbs.
@dadbudgetadventures

At this point it’s not about dietary balance as much as just showing what options are available. None of these are meant to be copied exactly as most people won’t be looking to do single source meals.

That comment about the bone holds true. I have found Bone Broth tends to be more bland than stock or regular broth. I like putting bouillon cubes in my day pack as in a pinch it is a nice boost I have a suggestion for an MRE for you: all star. Pick the best items that you find from your local spots to make a super 24 hour MRE composed of the best finds from multiple locations.

I used to shop Aldi in the 1990's and early 2000's but they have changed so much since then that I quit shopping there. I tend to frequent Walmart and Save-A-Lot mostly as well as BJ's (Think Cost-Co and Sam's Club with a full grocery store). Aldi used to have a lot of affordable items and budget friendly items, now it's becoming more like Whole Foods and the prices are starting to reflect those changes.

The lentils and barley are my favorite.. usually twice a year aldi has the loma Linda foods usually in July and January.. they make 3 ingredient bars with peanuts chocolate and dates.. Im curious now if you have ever done a Lidl mre or if you have a lidl near by? Thank you for all the great videos.. since you started doing vegetarian and meatless my vegetarian parents have started to watch you.. not to mock you , but after 30 years of welding I don’t have a sense of what feels like until it’s too late so thanks for the heads up

It was a little hard to tell from the video, but was the barley & lentils dry? It looked pretty loose when you poured it in the pan. As for adding some flavor, that bone broth powder sounds like it might be a good addition to it. Thank you for showing us all the cool stuff that's available for homemade MREs. I'm gradually pulling together a disaster kit and I'd like to have at least 2 weeks of food in a luggable container in case we have to bug out in a hurry. The products you've been showing us are perfect for that.

Have you seen the "readywise" meals? I picked up 3 from ingles. It's a single dish in a bag. You just add hot water to the bag. Looks like the contents are freeze dried. 2.5 servings per bag. Less than 6 dollars. I'm going to use these in a few of my MREs

@@dadbudgetadventures it was a new item. I'm going to try them out today to see how they taste. They made some really good food options with these. I'd love to freeze dry stuff here at home. I just can't justify the cost of the freezer. I wonder if we could come up with a diy freeze drier people could build at home. That would make a great video.

Cool video. Bone broth is good add. I use the microwave rice packs, and it could be a good add for flavor. Our shopping choices are limited to the big boxes. I am going to check out our world market. Is the water from the bar cooker usable? MRE flameless heaters are pretty chemical laden. Because I use the mess tins to heat pouches, I can use the water for other things like coffee or tea. I even use it for morning hygiene routine.

Seth is correct. The Barocook heats by a reaction of the water and quick lime in the fuel pack. The steam is non toxic but I wouldn’t advise using the water for anything else. Not to mention it doesn’t take much water and most of it gets absorbed into the pack. Kinda comes out like a puck when you’re done.

At $3 per warming pad and an almost $70 buy-in for the hardware I’ll skip the Barocook. There’s a 110v or 12v cigarette lighter (automobile) system made by Buddeww that’s a Bento style box that warms food and its only $24. But you’ve gotta have grid or a functioning car or a Jackery pack to power it

What a great kit, start to finish. THANKS! I want this for my regular everyday pantry! I LOVE lentils and barley. While I chow down on meat, I love vegetable based foods greatly. That all looks SO good. I hope my Aldi carries those two items. If so I will be bagging up MREs with these items. I'm with ya on not caring for protein bars. I dont mind meal bars, but rarely do the protein bars do anything for me. I've tried the waterdrop electrolyte drops. I'm on the fence about them. OK as daily drinker for low key electrolyte replacement but not something I want to rely on for heavy labor, ultra sweaty days, or long hard hike. Taste is good though-- very light. Probably great for those that need a good tasting electrolyte replacer. Takes awhile to dissolve. I like that brand of broth. They carry lots of flavors (not sure about Aldi). Fun facts that you didnt ask for, haha: The naturally occurring collagen (which contains arginine) in bone broth is considered "protein sparing", which allows whatever protein we take in to be better absorbed and to not be wasted. Helps body use it more efficiently. Different proteins are absorbed and utilized at different rates. Boring stuff, but I wonder if the original intent of including broth in MREs was for that as well as for comfort. 🤔

Do you think a Barocook fuel pouch have enough juice to heat up two meals, or is it pretty much used up after one meal? I guess I'm assuming the container only has enough room for one meal so you'd have to heat them one after another.
@dadbudgetadventures
@dadbudgetadventures 14 күн бұрын
You can get two different size pouches if you think you need more heat. It also depends on how hot you want it and how much food you’re heating. I’ve done two meals on one pack but I don’t get them piping hot. There is, however, usually some power left when I take mine out.
