A little over $10 each, honestly, is a pretty decent deal. You can't even get a hamburger value meal for that price these days it seems. And if you do it certainly won't come with desert.

@@dadbudgetadventures It is 11.75 each or 12.75 each if you include your little expensive mylar bags. 1261 calories but way too much of it comes from sugar and things expire quickly. Weighs 1.2lbs without any of your extra packaging or utensils and it is big an MRE that I get is the size of your little churros bag. Not ideal. I can get MREs with higher calorie counts, that are lighter, last longer and with a heater and utensils for 7 dollars at my local army navy surplus store. I don't think this is a great idea especially with how fast the food dies. Unless you are taking these camping and rotating pretty often it seems like a terrible idea, a solution in search of a problem.

Could you do a video going in to what criteria you look at in terms of what you choose to include or not include? I know you recently started adding nutritional information (definitely keep doing that!) but are you considering that when you are building these, or are you just trying to build a tasty meal? There's a TON out there on backpacking food, but it feels like the space is more empty when it comes to car camping or emergency MRE / food. Also, it seems like you have been doing this awhile. Maybe do a video series on how to get started making homemade MREs (what type and where to find pouches, heating elements, cooking methods, etc) Just my thoughts on the kinds of things I'd like to watch, obviously you do you, but if you want suggestions on what one viewer would be interested in, there you go.

Congratulations on hitting 10,000 subscribers. I was looking at hydration. Each of my rations has a hydration pack that has 3 items per meal: a hot drink, a cold drink, and an electrolyte drink. Plus, a few individually wrapped water purification tablets. The hot drinks could be: coffee, hot cocoa, tea, sugar packets, and maybe individual packs of powdered creamer if I could find less than 1000 at a time... lol. I guess I could get a couple at a gas station or 7-11. Cold drinks: I am fond of those lemonade / iced tea packets at Dollar Tree, some of the grape drink or a variety of others. If you don't like artificial sweeteners, Dollar Tree does have an instant iced tea pkg with sugar in it, but it would need to be repackaged into smaller bags. (You should break out the heat sealer and show people how easy it is to make custom mylar bags.) Electrolytes: Liquid IV powder, Emergen-C, Propel powder, Gatorade mix, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS). Helps replenish electrolytes when medically dehydrated. Potassium, etc. Water purification tablets: now that these are individually wrapped, it's a game changer. Each tablet will do 1 quart of water. If you have 1 or 2 per meal, you are all set for water and don't have to use fuel to boil it. A hydration pack like this will keep you going in any weather, hot or cold. The extra pack of electrolytes will get you back on your feet if it is extremely hot and you get dehydrated. And the water purification tablets will keep you safe if you don't have a safe drinking water source in a disaster. They are lightweight, relatively inexpensive, and last for years. These are great videos. Keep them coming.

With the ataki cooker. Do you need to use clean water to heat the food? Will using dirty water for heating taint the food and make you sick?
@dadbudgetadventures9 ай бұрын
That’s a good question. I think it really depends on the particulars of the water. It does boil and steam so it seems like it would be fine but the food is exposed to the steam in the cooker. I think that’s a question for someone with a lot more science knowledge than me.

We have been making our own MREs for quite a while now and make everything able to make and eat with minimal effort and can be used on the fly. One thing we do is to dehydrate meat and vegetables and seal in a small mylar bag with a bullion cube so that all you have to do is add boiling water and enjoy

Great video- The sodium is a real challenge in these types of meals; regular MRE's range from around 1200mg (veg lasagna)-2700 mg (meatballs/marinara) of sodium per meal, so you are right in the range with your menus. They do make low-sodium versions, however. Those Yammy snacks might be better with some honey if you'd include a packet or two.

I know I commented already, but it's buried somewhere down below. Here's hoping the weather didn't shorten your trip! And guess what? I was surprised by the offer of a bag lunch from our local Jobs and Family Services van yesterday. When I got around to checking it out, it was almost like one of your MREs! Bumble Bee chicken salad kit, Great Value Mountain Trail Mix individual pack, Great Value chewy granola bar, pudding cup and a bottle of water. Not super, duper healthy, but also not super unhealthy either. Two of the items met your expiration requirements and the other two expired in September. (The water didn't have one). And it all hovered at around 60 g of carbs, so the insulin load was okay for a diabetic. I was pretty chuffed.

I am a fairly new subscriber, so your videos are showing up in my KZbin feed in no particular order. That said, I think you have done enough of these that you could probably do a "Best of" video. (I hope you have been taking notes on your videos.) In your "Best of" video, you would give us your opinion of the best three; entrees, sides, snacks, desserts and drinks, pulled from your previous videos. Then you could give us your opinion of the three easiest MRE's to assemble, the most expensive and the cheapest. At the end you would tell us which MRE's you thought were the best.

Hi, just subscribed to your channel. Everybody doesn't have access to the military commissary, but it would be interesting to see what MRE you could come up with from just one area of the international food aisle... An Asian MRE, a German MRE, a Spanish MRE or a UK MRE entry. Thank you for the video, I enjoyed seeing what you assembled and the taste test. Keep up the great content.

After spending 24 years in the Infantry, and eating the MRE's from the mid-80's until the 2000's, I REALLY appreciate the more "tailored" palette of your meals. Another real bonus is that these are MUCH cheaper than the off the shelf, pre packaged offerings, whether mil surplus or some of the civilian meals. The one shortfall I see is the shelf life compared to the others. But, again, they are cheaper, and can be rotated until they can't....
@dadbudgetadventures9 ай бұрын
I remember when they would practically give away rations. Now they are a high demand item. The ones I make are meant more for short term disaster relief or outdoor adventures and aren’t really intended for long term stockpiling. It’s really more of an exploration of what’s out there and available.
