This is a simple electrolytic separator. An important thing to note is that this process uses a LOT of electricity. It's a very costly process due to this. If you're considering separating out your own oxygen and/or hydrogen to save money, you likely won't. The cost of electricity will likely be more than purchasing the respective gasses from a manufacturer.

Great video. I want to know what is the proportion of caustic soda to be mixed with water. Please share.
@eltunene4 жыл бұрын
A 40% ratio should be fine, that is, 40 grams of caustic soda per liter of water. You can slowly add about 10 grams of caustic soda to half a liter of cold water, then pour the solution into a bigger container, and repeat the operation. CAUTION: CORROSIVE AND DANGEROUS SOLUTION! do not add water to the caustic soda, but caustic soda to one liter of water little by little, since the solution generates some heat and if using a small amount of water, the water can boil and burst. Wear safety goggles and rubber gloves to prevent spilling of caustic soda to your eyes and skin in general. Always use enough water so it can absorb the heat and dissipate it, and add the soda into the water and not the other way. It is better to dissolve a small amount of caustic soda first and give it a try for operation of the cell. You can make the solution in a tall glass of water stirring slowly and adding some grams at a time, handle the solution with care. Do not touch eyes or mouth. On the other hand, the oxygen generated may not be suitable for breathing, due to other salts present in the water. Please check with a physician as to purity of the gas, before attempting to use it for clinical purposes. This project is intended for a small torch, with low volumes of oxygen produced.

Thanks for your comment! As a matter of fact, You could use a solar still. In my section My Community You Will find a drawing of a simple solar still connected to the generator. Please keep in mind that the oxygen produced must be certified by medical personnel, and also that the amount of gas produced may not be enough for such application. There is a full explanation included with the drawing.
@eltunene3 жыл бұрын
Dear Glanze Epic, thanks for your comment; originally, the project was intended for a small torch, such as the kind used in jewelry. However, it can inspire somebody to keep researching and experimenting in order to produce larger volumes of oxygen. However, several things must be taken into account: Electrolysis consumes a lot of electricity; oxygen and hydrogen must not mix, they are explosive together; large volumes production involves a lot of heat production also, so the materials used must withstand high temperatures: any intention of medical use must be supervised closely by qualified medical personnel, even "known good" oxygen from tanks can be dangerous if excessive; water used in the process must be distilled water, since raw water from the tap may have chlorine salts dissolved as well, yielding to the production of chlorine along with oxygen; finally, if pumps are to be used to try to store the oxygen, they must be special, oil-less pumps, since oxygen is a strong oxydizer, and many objects, including metals, may burn violently in the presence of pure oxygen. Regards!

Thanks, Frederick, for your kind comment!!! The generator was thought for using in a small welding torch, but with certain modifications, it can be used for other applications. First of all, the quality of the oxygen must be much better. Distilled water must be used, so no salts are present, which could pose a danger of producing other gases along with the oxygen, such as chlorine. A solar still can be used to save power in such a process. With regards to the amount of liters of oxygen per minute, that can be determined by the size of the generator itself, and MUST be checked by a health professional. Something else would be the energy consumed by a bigger generator, maybe solar panels can help here. NaOh acts as electrolyte to conduct DC current through water. The percentage is usually decided by current limit of power supply, but not everyone will have multimeter at home. So eyeballing the bubble and wall socket temperatures works just fine. If you add too much you will burn the wall socket. For practical purposes. Start with very little until you see bubble rising, and then keep adding until you see whole screw covered with bubbles. Keep and eye on wall plug temperatures every 5 minutes, warm is ok but hot is not. If you add too much NaOH you will burn the wall socket.

@@eltunene However, if you do not have practical experience, you cannot pretend your fantasies work. First of all, you have the wrong electrodes (screws). Minerals will accumulate on them. After a while, the "screws" will not work (they will not produce gas). A small source of weak voltage and current is more suitable for galvanizing than for the production of oxygen and hydrogen. You cannot absorb hydrogen in the free space of the box, but in the bell, as you have with oxygen. Replenishing water with a "toilet" mechanism is very optimistic - you probably expect a large production of gas, but this is a complete mistake. If you industrially produced hydrogen by electrolysis with a power input of several kW, it would be understandable. In the domestic embodiment, the water is replenished through connected vessels, i.e. by another "toilet" mechanism. It is also necessary to make the water conductive, preferably table salt. My hydrogen and oxygen (Brown's gas) generator has the right design and power source. It can continuously supply a small burner with which it melts glass.

Dear G RP, you are right! The more the energy, the more of both gases you get. However, you must exert some caution and proceed by gradually increasing the power applied to the device, since some heat is also generated. Maybe you could start with a smaller amount of NaOH dissolved in the water and watch for overheating of the solution (by disconnecting the power before checking the solution temperarure). You could also add an external limiter, such as a light dimmer you can turn back and reduce the amount of energy flowing through the cell and thus control the reaction. Please be very careful to check the two gases do not mix. Please let me know about your results.

@eltunene4 жыл бұрын
You´re right, the larger the area the more contact with the solution and the higher the amount of O2 produced. The problem is if oxygen is too abundant, there is the risk of a fire. Anyway, the principle is valid for bigger plates, generator cells and amount of water. You can even work with much higher voltage than the one I suggested, and get several liters of oxygen per minute.

@@eltunene several liters? i didn't know that,i thought you'd get much less; i will try that,i need a oxy-propane torch; but i do not want accumulation of that H2 anywhere,not even on top of the water either,may have to use a second bottle for that,vented to the atmosphere thru a just enough thin hose.
@eltunene4 жыл бұрын
@@josepeixoto3384 Good idea! If you use separate hoses, maybe it will even work by feeding oxygen and hydrogen to two nozzles separately, and replacing the propane by hydrogen. By using larger electrodes, and maybe a higher voltage, you can get more hydrogen and oxygen (separately, in two independent hoses. You can build it differently by using two cells for oxygen and hydrogen, using PVC pipes. One basic thing to keep in mind is to leave the PVC open in the bottom and the electrodes at the proper position in order to have the liquid down until the electrode is not making contact with electrolyte at all, so the reaction will stop when the PVC pipe is almost full with gas. This will insure the reaction will stop and the gas wo'nt "spill around" the electrodes, allowing both gases to mix, which will not be safe at all.

Dear Justin. This suggested project is by no means a new invention, obtaining oxygen from water is a very old system, as early as the nineteen century, used at first to measure electricity (hofmann voltameter), and later for torch welding. However, a formal project could include a solar water still (to get pure distilled water), and solar panels for the electricity source, as well as special pumps to store the oxygen (and the hydrogen) in cyliners for later use. Please watch this video by a fellow youtuber kzbin.info/www/bejne/enfJYamGaKmnmJY and this article in Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxyhydrogen . By combining the oxygen cell, a solar still and photovoltaic electricity, large volumes of oxygen (and hydrogen) can be achieved at a low cost.

The main thing is to make sure the oxygen is pure, and that can only be evaluated by a qualified health professional. Please try with a small device first and check the quality of the oxygen produced, if this is correct, you can expand the system, always keeping in mind that hydrogen and oxygen must not mix in the machine, since they are an explosive mixture, and also the reaction involves a small amount of heat, so you must check for that also, if the machine becomes considerably large. First of all, oxygen quality and secondly, check for heat generated. I have a drawing with suggestions, no amounts or sizing specified, but the main features such as layout and electricity sources. The stailess steel screws can be replaced by stailess steel wool, for a larger electrode surface. As a matter of fact, the first part of the video lists the suggested components, but they are not limited to the dimensions listed. Just keep in mind oxygen and hydrogen are very dangerous, since if ignited, they combine violently. Keep all connections airtight.

Dear Alvin, yes to all, but since anyone can make this Oxygen and Hydrogen generator (electrolysis is a long known process), using both hydrogen and oxygen combined can be dangerous. Of course, with all due precautions, it can, and has been used by many people for a HOH torch. The process I detail in the video is a little slower, but produces separate Oxygen and Hydrogen gas, so they mix only at the very torch output. Also a larger cell could be built, taking into account the amount of heat produced by the generation, and yes, water is the only result of combustion.

Dear Shirish, it can be possible to generate oxygen as fast as you want, however, beware, there are some other vital concerns. If water from the tap contains some foreign substances such as sodium chloride and other salts, as well as chlorine in solution, the oxygen can be badly contaminated by chlorine and other lethal gases. On the other hand, only a doctor can determine the rate the patient needs. Another high risk is handling both oxygen and hydrogen, if a considerable amount of oxygen is present in a room, virtually any object becomes violently flammable, such as drapes, fabrics, plastics, even some metals can burn in a pure oxygen atmosphere. Other than that, the bigger the generator, the more gases produced. Using stainless steel plates instead of screws, a bigger power supply and a bigger piece of equipment, you can get any amount you wish.

Dear Groovy One, the NaOH is not consumed in the reaction, only if it gets contaminated by some scale in the water, it must be replaced, water and all. By using distilled water, it yields clean oxygen, however normal tap water does contain some salts that might pose a risk of oxygen contamination with chlorine. Very important, both gases must not mix, since the mixture is very flammable! Also, some heat is evolved in the process, so cooling may be needed. If you plan to build it, please start with a small version, and go on from there, either by enlargement or by using two or more small units in parallel. I have heard of someone using the hydrogen for running a gas refrigerator, which would make good use of the otherwise lost hydrogen. Oxygen must be certified by professionals, to make sure it does not contain toxic gases, such as chlorine! I also posted an Indi version, and at the very end there is a scheme with some suggested improvements, please take a look at that too.

Then build several small units and hook their output hoses in parallel, so you can have more oxygen yield. Warning! distilled water should be used, in order to get hi quality oxygen. You must hire a medical expert to check if your oxygen is totally pure. On the other hand, there is some heat evolved, and you must account for that also. Do not proceed to use unit if you are unsure about oxygen purity, gas leaks, or probability of both gases being mixed, which will pose an imminent risk of explosion. Please get advise from medical experts. Normal tap water can contain chlorine or chlorine salts, which would produce chlorine along with the oxygen. Very toxic!!
