That will be difficult with a common crankcase. But I will rebuild the crankshaft as soon as V8 is finished.

Amazing achievement, there is so much design and thought that goes into projects like this and a lot of dedication, I built a radial as well, the balance and lubrication system are big topics on their own. What aluminium did you use for the conrods. What valve timing events did you use, so many individual parts of the design that take a lot of though. Excellent engineering and love the casting process. Well done sir.
@Desmouffe2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The conrods are made of standard aluminium bars EN-AW6082 with bronze bushings at th ends. The master rod I was afraid to do it in aluminium and a steel one should be to heavy, so I had to compromise. The rod in aluminium and the center in steel. Rivited together. I still had to make quite a big counterweight. For the valve timing I used one camshaft with teo intakelobes and two exhaustlobes, rotating with 1/4 speed of the crankshaft and in the opposit direction. Not my idea but there are many helpful people and a lot of information on the internet. I looked at your videos. Very nice build
@tim777jet2 жыл бұрын
@@Desmouffeto calculate the balance i used the total of all the rotating weights plus just over half the reciprocating weights (0.509), I found an old document with that figure. Yes the radial engine is a challenge and unique especially the cam drive system. I used 5 camshafts in the end driven conventionally with chains. I used light valve springs to reduce the loads on the system.
@Desmouffe2 жыл бұрын
@@tim777jet That number sounds familiar. I found a document posted by one W.B. Richard with a formula. Maby the same one....
@tim777jet2 жыл бұрын
@@Desmouffe the balancing is interesting because by the nature of the design, the cylinders do not reach their top dead center at the actual equal number of degrees around. For a 5 cylinder engine that would be every 72 degrees, but they vary because of the master rod geometry. Only the master rod piston is correct the others will differ by a few degrees. That means the ignition timing and cam timing will alter. On old WW2 engines I believe the distributer cam that operates the points, was ground not equally but offset slightly to oprimize the ignition timing for each cylinder. I have 5 sets of points and each one is individually drilled off to exactly its own cylinder top dead center. My cylinders vary by about 4 degrees on 2 of the cylinders and 2 degrees on the other two cylinders if I recall correctly. If everything was set up at exactly 72 degree intervals, with the master cylinder set at say 5 degrees ignition advance , two of the cylinders would be advanced just 1 degree and two cylinders just 3 degrees. For this reason I think radial engines can never be truly balanced because the geometry prevents 4 of the cylinders moving in a perfect rotary motion as the master cylinder does. Radials are amazing engines and the more you research the more strange things you find out.
@Desmouffe2 жыл бұрын
@@tim777jet I did not know that but of course, You're right. Maby the solution should be making a new crankcase that's not a perfect pentagon. Adjust the angels between cylinders. That would correct both valve timing and ignition. I use B&S original ignition coils and flywheel. Something to think about if I build another one.

What made you choose the radial engine type Sir ??? Very nice work too.

I have always wanted to build my own engine but build a single cylinder engine out of lawnmower parts feels a little bit stupid. But I love radial engines so why not. Maybe not the perfect choise for my first petrol engine but, Hey , IT RUNS...

Did you fix the master rod with 2 large rivets ? . It is amazing how the master cylinder piston takes all the anti rotation forces of the other cylinders while moving up and down. I imagine having the engine horizontal alleviates the hydrulic lock issues with the oil run down when stationary. The aluminium rods I made were 7075 . I was not concerned with the compressive forces but the tensile forces on the exhaust stroke are a concern especially when the ally as at running temperature which reduces tensile strength in ally even further. Did you use a slinger arrangement in the intake system to help distribution. I went for 5 seperate carbs. I tried vacuum gauges to balance but was hopeless. I balanced them old school in the end by removing 1 plug cap at a time and tweeking the idle stops until the rpm drop was the same, worked well. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim
@Desmouffe2 жыл бұрын
Yes, two steel rivets. For the calculation of the counterweight it was important that all pistons and rods had the same weight. And maby it was possible to do the masterrod in aluminium, I dont know. I's my first petrolengine. Not the smartest choise to do a radial as the first build....
