Had a razor sharp mdf system, gave up on regritting the mdf wheel, made an 8" plywood wheel, glued on 240 grit emery sandpaper, just like this lasting over 50 sharpening and still going without any signs of failing!!!!

Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night kzbin.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

Brilliant idea for beginners in regards to the angle device. Great job!

Great job! I saw on a commercial unit angle markings for height of blade for a given angle of sharpening. Great that your rest is adjustable!
@JamesComstockCages Жыл бұрын
Super. You addressed the all import aspect of holding the angle. So many show the wheels, which is fine, but do nothing to get the proper angle and hold it. Great job. Just thinking that in lieu of a clamp on the rod to hold the knife a neodymium magnet might work?

Some tips: Cut the sandpaper on an angle instead of butting it square for greater longevity.. When going from right to left and from left to right use consistent pressure and move at the same speed in each direction. It takes some practice but that's how you get even bevels. A perfect angle wont get you far without even strokes. Do one past at a time in each direction to keep your edge in the very center. Stay on the sandpaper side until you raise a burr along the entire edge. Break the burr off and then move to the compound wheel. Use way less compound. A little goes a long way! If you've ground the bevel right and removed the burr, two or three strokes on each side and you'll be able to shave with it.

Clearly this system works, and requires less eye-hand coordination than using progressively finer grits on a 2x72.

Very nice! Why did you coat the sand paper with the wax? Is that so the metal filings won't stick to it and that way it will last longer?
@shawnsolar4724 Жыл бұрын
On the design of the original razor edge system they used wax to prevent the grit from being too abrasive on the blade (eating away faster than desired)

Will try your sandpaper method!! I've got the razor sharp wheels, work great for about 5 knives, then need regritting. Trying different glues, anyone having grit retention problems/ fixes? Razor sharp says should be able to do 100 knives......
@paulr50276 ай бұрын
Same here, grit lasted about 2 knives, just mixed lots of grit with the glue, so far lasting over 5 knives

I put a diamond disc over the grinding wheel and mounted the bench grinder sideways so the disc is horizontal. A slope gives me 25 degrees for the chisel or plane iron. Not good health and safety but it is cheap and works.

Why don't you remove the motor from the base then reattach after rotating the motor 180 degrees. This way you can have the switch in front of you. there are several videos on KZbin
@buckbeans12 жыл бұрын
@WungusBill sorry Wungus but I suggest you look at the following video and see what many of us have done. you do not need to reach over the grinder and you don't need to walk around the table to get to the switch. My grinder which I use daily has has the switch right in front of me and the the wheel turning away from me. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6S6q5Z8d9GBo7c

I love it when people love what they're doing, BUT......I think it was a serious mistake to glue the sandpaper to the wheel. It will wear out and then what? A whole better way to do it all for quick and cheap is to get a $50 belt sander at Harbor Freight and use different grit belts that are cheap, easy to change, and can sharpen anything from a mower blade to an axe, to a pair of scissors, to any knife, literally in seconds. I applaud what you did, but there is a much easier way.
@zoltankollar3448 Жыл бұрын
Hello, the scythe blade should not be sharpened with tape, but with a hammer.
@DonHutchins Жыл бұрын
He could simply grind away that worn paper and apply new. The commercial "Razor Sharp Edgemaking" tool actually using a grit that is glued to the wheel, so when it wears out you simply remove it (gently grind it off then sand smooth, apply glue, and reapply new grit). You can purchase a jar of this grit (enough for dozens of applications) at Woodcraft (search for Razor Sharp Edgemaking RazorSharp Jar of Grit). They also sell the rouge (buff wheel) and wax (grit wheel).
