I am contemplating in building mine using a solid block of Maple or hardwood plywood. The area where I live is bad for temperature swings and I am worried solid wood might warp or crack.

As long as it's dried. Kiln or air, you won't have any issues!

How heavy is the pure piece of wood ???

Depends! All hardwood is a little different. After hollowing it out, it's not really that heavy.
