Inspired by other home made tennis ball throwers I decided to make my own! Remote control is on/off only, range 80'. Currently it's single speed but the ball feeder timing is manually adjustable. Cost about $180 but I had the extrusion and other raw materials already.
Wheels = 125mm PU
Throw wheel motors = 775 24v 7,000rpm
Hopper rotator motor = Uxcell 12v 2rpm gearmotor
3D model available on GrabCad:

Waiting on a few bits and pieces . Am trying with two 775 motors. They take about 1 amp at 12 volts and spin high revs. I'm guessing 6000. Nothing to measure with. What's the ideal spacing between wheels? Almost ready to fly out my first ball. Heads up!

Rich, one more question for you. Where did yo find the mounting plates for your motors to attach them to your extrusions? My ball machine today is mostly done in wood and after seeing your project, I'm thinking about converting it to extrusions as well (lighter). The structure seems fairly simple to be done (although I want to put a motor to move the bloc up and down as well) but where I get stuck is on the mounting plate itself. Did you made them? If so, can you share with me how you did it?
@RichVideosNH
@RichVideosNH 5 жыл бұрын
I machined the mounting plates out of 6061 aluminum plate. I don't have any photos. I think maple or oak would be okay. They'd just have to be a bit thicker for rigidity, maybe 3/8-1/2"?

What did you use to make the Ryobi battery receptacle? Did you use the case from an old charger, did you find it premade somewhere, or did you do something very clever like 3D Print it? I've been imagining using a Ryobi battery for the power source on the science project I'm trying to help my grandnephew design and build, but short of cannibalizing my own tools for the receptacle or driving 60 miles to buy a not so cheap old tool off Craigslist, I'm darned if I can find something to work. I'd appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks! I get about 140 balls per full charge battery. A UPS battery would likely work just as good or better depending on the mAh size. I was planning on that originally actually, but thought it would be a unique project to try out my Ryobi ones.

Hi Rich, how did you get the wheels to stay in place on the , like what is that thing that you built or bought at 0:45 called? I'm not an engineer at all; I'm a kid who likes tennis. Please let me know. Thanks! Edit: Also, where can I buy the extrusions (the frame I am guessing) and what are the parts called, v-slots?
@RichVideosNH
@RichVideosNH 5 жыл бұрын
That's the shaft to mount the wheels. The pin is what drives the wheels with the shaft. Square shaft keys are more common but round was just easier to fabricate since I didn't have a broach to make the square feature on the wheel. Google shaft keys for more info.
@t4rif4ri
@t4rif4ri 3 жыл бұрын
How did you fixed the wheels on the axis where the motor is connected to?
@RichVideosNH
@RichVideosNH 3 жыл бұрын
at 0:45 there's a photo of the shaft with an 1/8" pin. This acts as a keyway to drive the wheels. I didn't have a broach so instead of a square drive key I used a dowel pin and milled a 1/16 radius inside the wheel bore. Unfortunately I didn't take photos of that to add to the video. Hope this helps though!

Im progressing with my own project. Instead of the tiny 775 am using the heaftier my6812 motors. Using a car window winder motor to turn the disc. Am wondering how troublesome the disc mechanism is and how prone it is to jam ups. Im almost done and will post my own video soon. Hoping within 6 months anyways. Just a pet project.

Hello Rich, congratulations for such nice work! I've accessed all the files you provided in order to build a machine like yours. Me neither. Thanks

it doesn't seem you need much code, you just plug a switch from the arduino to the motors and let them roll, you could even do it without the ardruino it's just battery/motor/switch, the ardruino part is if you want remote control

@@RichVideosNH You could determine an estimate of average ball speed by looking at the video and measuring distance travelled (80' ) over time of travel (video frame count at 1/24 sec/frm?) from the "Pop" the ball makes at launch to the ball hitting the ground. The lower the launch angle the better.
