I've used Steam, just half fill the empty Tank with water and pop it on the Stove but be ready to douse the Tank with Water immediately the dent pops. Coz the whole Tank will go like a Cartoon Balloon and make a "Whang!" Sound and you'll need to panel beat the whole Tank back into shape. So be very careful. Get a big bucket of cold water, and leave the keys in the cap so you can open it quick. Cheers Red Rider! I'll maybe try air pressure. You can try putting your mouth over the filler and blow , might be enough. 👍❤️✌️

I made an 89 gallon fuel tank for my Truck. It had some fuel leaks where I welded the tank together. My tank has a 2" pipe nipple for a gas filler neck .. Many Truck fuel tanks use pipe threads 2" 3" 4" ect.. All I had to do is put a valve stem with a 1/8" pipe thread valve stem. These valve stems are commonly used in plumbing. Just drill and tape a 2" pipe cap for 1/8" pipe threads.. Then I put 5 psi on the tank and spray my welds with a soap made for detecting air leaks in tires. Most of my pin hole leaks were where I stopped and started welding beads. I learned that I need to grind the slag off from the hot rolled metal so the welds are more pure. Cold Rolled metal has oil on it. You have to clean off all of the oil with solvent before attempting to weld it. I am curious at this point to look for videos on dent removal from hail damage on cars. To remove Stubborn dents you need to weld a bolt in the middle of the dent and attach a slide hammer to it. Body shops weld a rods to the dents heat the area then grab the rods with vice grips and pull them out. Then of course apply new primer and paint.

Thank you, Red, for pointing out the very important point about using a Harley Davidson valve stem on a dent fixer-upper thingy on a Harley tank, and going to Honda for a Honda valve stem... You will need both a Harley valve stem as well as a Honda valve stem for your Shovel, right?? :) Also remember, if you are working on a BSA, Norton, or Triumph to use aluMINium plates, and not just regular aluminum. Very important on a British bike. Stay warm up there in Celsius Land. It's snowing on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico today!

There are guys who can remove hale dents from car roofs and hoods with heat that does not damage the paint. After putting a little air pressure to a tank, you could heat the dented area by applying heat in a circular motion with a propane or acetylene torch. You have to get 100% of the gasoline fumes out of the tank first however.
@mnmstoy511 күн бұрын
I used a kit from Amazon that used hot glue and a slide hammer. Good enough for me. It's not perfect and neither is my Road King. If you get the light to hit just right you can see the imperfections. Still better then what it was when I bought my bike. Plus I didn't have to paint anything. You may want to see inside to see if your gas tank liner survived. Mine was flaking off. That's a whole new ordeal to clean and repair.

my bike came with a dent in the tank .. i can't complain though, i got a good deal on the raw materials. i fixed my dent like most people though, bondo..... would be nice to get a bit more fuel on though. it's probably like half a shot glass worth though....and your making this look like it's not worth it ( do I want to work on my bike? or go for a ride ? Hmmm. ) i worked on my new bike for 2 years strait, when i first got it ... i have had just a few things on slate every year since.

That`s a cool idea. But Old school would fill the tank with water and put in the freezer. haha. oh. funny story. I did paint motorcycles years ago and a friend had a tank he wanted me to fix after his father in-law painted it, but it had a dent in it, and he tried popping it with air and too much after he painted it. He used way too much bondo and you could stick a penny in the crack after.

It doesn't work allways. More often you should preheat dent part with a heat gun or blow torch (paint job probably say bye bye). In my case using air not only didn't fix dent but also slightly distorted whole fuel tank. I were so desperated I used powder actuated tool (without piston and other internals) to make pressure impact. It didnt pulled this dent, even when I filled whole tank with water and then shoot. Paradoxically, the tank was from old Honda CX 500, inside heavilly corroded... and this dent made myself by pushing thumb just a little bit stronger! :D
