By adding your 75% vinegar to the gallon of water, you've made a solution of vinegar that is weaker than household vinegar by about half ( it ends up about 2.3% ). Just use a gallon of regular household vinegar (5%), it's safer to work with and will be a little stronger than what you've made. Add the salt to the household vinegar, let it mix well (warming the vinegar first helps), then add your detergent. That way, you'll have the same thing but with stronger vinegar. Since you don't care what it tastes like, you can get the really cheap vinegar and save a bit more.

Vinegar works with Dawn because Dawn is a detergent. However, vinegar will curdle castile soap, which could damage your sprayers and even the watering can. If you want a biodegradable detergent, I'd go with Sal Suds. Source: Going Green with Lisa Bronner.

I'm not seeing where you think this is a good alternative. You've drastically changed the pH of the soil you've sprayed and maybe the adjoining soil because the mixture will move into the adjoining soil with rain or watering; as well as killing portions of the biome (bugs, worms, microbes, etc) which keep the soil healthy. Just because you are using common everyday products does not necessarily make them the right things to use. Just my opinion from 50+ years of gardening.

Very informative. This might only work in Australia and probably just for small gardens, but for most smaller weeds that pop up on the footpaths or driveway I tip a "splash" of boiled water straight out of the kettle directly onto the weed - H2O is arguably the cheapest and safest chemical you can use. Give that a go before you take up alchemy..... (disclaimer: boiling water consumes energy, which adds to your carbon footprint, and H2O in vapor form is of course the most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, so you might be killing the planet along with the weeds - if you're suffering from CDS (Climate Derangement Syndrome) then this isn't for you; also, wear protective apparel to avoid injury - I always were sandals rather than bare feet - and ensure dog noses aren't between the kettle and the weed when applying the mixture) For the other Commentors: Yes, it's a little lengthy in the explanations, but I for one appreciate the detail - and KZbin has a wonderful, apparently hidden, feature that allows you to skip/pause/rewind a video!!! - who would have thought??? I can do a detailed instructional video if you're struggling with the concept, but I fear people will give up after the first 30 seconds.

@Chris-op7yt4 ай бұрын
@@DawnaRo : the real answer is that people make it easy for weeding and weed regularly, which is not possible with gravel already there. copper is not expensive but you also need to be careful not to use in too high concentration or too regularly, especially if anywhere near water ways. another alternative is a weed burner, which is like a mini flame thrower, just not so drastic. it's an initial outlay and regular burning of the weeds is required. there is no one treatment that makes weeds go away forever. pool salt is one of the worst chemicals to do the job. but you do you.

I appreciate the effort you put into your video. Your video was well shot and edited, and had good audio quality. Full marks on your production values! However, it did take you far too long to get to the point. When teaching, break your information up into three priorities. 1 must know. 2 should know. 3 nice to know. In a short video, you really only have time for priorities 1 and possibly some 2. Also please don't state the bleedin' obvious - assume your audience is smart. I was very interested in the subject you presented, but I did find myself feeling frustrated at times. Especially when I thought you were about to get to the key point, but then you would start talking about what you were going to show us later in the video. Here is a classic structure that might work for you. 1 Them what you are going to tell them. (topic headings only, no details 2 Tell them. (Details) 3 Tell them what you told them. (Succint summary of key points) You have a lot of subscribers so you're clearly doing something right! Work a little harder and weed!! If you take a few minutes every day, it’s not that difficult!
@salvadormonella89533 ай бұрын
I thought everyone knew that salting plants kills them. It is no replacement for a general herbicide, though. Firstly: your comment about needing a season to wash out for new planting is wrong. This stuff doesn't wash out in a season. It stays and stays. 2ndly: It does not kill quickly. Depending upon the plant, it can take up to two years to work. 3rdly: Unlike roundup, salt can leach into the roots of desirable plants nearby and kill them too. So, yeah, salt can be used, but I wouldn't use it near anything I didn't want to kill. Anything downhill will be killed after the first rain or watering. Also, if you're serious about killing a plant, salt kills larger plants too slowly to be practical. Did you read about using salt somewhere, or did you just make this up without thoroughly testing your suggestion?
@joedavis1404Ай бұрын
Or glyphosate, it’s regulated, effective and has been studied ad nauseam due to its widespread use, sadly it’s been politicized. Roundup or any other trade name properly registered is far safer to use and it is not as damaging a formulation as the diy chemical concoctions. Check out the toxicity scale of glyphosate versus coffee, vinegar etc. (I hope he’s mixing his chemicals in a well ventilated area, safety glasses and gloves would be a good idea also)
