COOOOOOL!!! I want make one like that for my store room! I always see bedrails thrown away in back alleys and sitting in thrift stores. May as well put it to use!

Great look, I love the simplicity of the book case and the Iron angle and wood combination. I would love to see a different take on a Wine Rack solution using similar material, with a modern simple look. Thanks for such a nice video.

Big fan of your work Ben. I adapted this project by using cutting up twin medal platforms(free in the the alley way/ you can find on craigslist) for the angle irons. :)

Ben, did you find that the nails held the piece together well? I'm thinking screws would give a more solid finish?

your youtube channel is like a bag of awesome all these cool projects. anyone can do and do cheaply and have nice stuff. I like to repurpose stuff and get stuff cheap bed rails could be fit in stead of angle iron. am starting to build concrete flower pot for my wife from one of your other projects great video

Good Idea but if you want it to last a bit longer I would pre-drill and use screws. There are a lot of options for screws and can add as a deco effect.

There are steel angles which already have holes in them. I know a few people who have used them for home server racks, bookshelves and even a car ramp.

I luv this modern scandinavian (per say) style you choose, i am so tiered of those 100s of classic/traditional style diy channels! The white walls + your vids look tidy! Glad i found this! (if someone knows any other channel like this please share!) Question: How do you choose/decide on "what to DIY"? :) Thanks!

You could have used the fir balusters vertically instead of horizontally to transfer the weight more efficiently from one shelf to another. This way the load bearing goes through the length of the baluster instead of the skinny nails that are holding the shelf up. Granted you aren't using a lot of weight on those shelves, but with that modification you could easily hold three or four times the weight. Instead of books, you could use it to hold up tools, or any other heavy items, such as bottled water, jars, or anything else.
@mattphipps13686 жыл бұрын
For more rigidity and stability I would run the balusters along the front and back shelf edges to limit and possibly eliminate the shelf flex and use lag screws to attach the shelves to the irons.

Ben I love this design. I'm built one book case and making three more. Are the shelf supported needed? I used lag bolts and it worked very well. The idea to use old bed frames is great to save some money.

I'm not too thrilled with the idea of using (apparently) only 2 NAILS per shelf end. Screws would hold tighter and for a longer life-span. From what I saw in the video I'd surmise that the shelves would work loose very quickly and the whole project would collapse. You went as far as to use balusters to support the shelves, but there doesn't seem to be any real support / anchoring of the shelves to the angle irons. Overall it's a good idea but it needs a bit more work on the strength and stability - especially since you are using 4 foot long 2x10's for the shelves... those things are HEAVY all by themselves....
@hecbuma7 жыл бұрын
Great video, I have a question what is the size of the nails and why use it them instead of screws? Also on the side does nails goes through the balusters and also through the 2x10? Thanks
@RieLaughingSpirit7 жыл бұрын
I'm really really really green with stuff like this but I want to try it. The question I have is about the angle iron. What size do you get as far as thickness goes? What is the thinnest you could get that would still be sturdy? What should it be made of? I know aluminum is probably way too light.
@DXmaryoOD6 жыл бұрын
what would you suggest using at the bottom of the bookshelf so wood flooring won't get scratched?
@mleong256 жыл бұрын
Thoughts on aluminum instead of steel angles? What if I placed the balusters vertical to distribute that weight? Issue is that I can't find pre cut angle irons and don't have the tools to drill into one. Thanks!

I really like the simplicity of the design but I'd like to make this bookcase about six feet tall or twice the height of the original plan. Would it be stable or would it tend to tip over?

How about building a media centre? For that includes a spot for a record player? I would love to see that. Great work. Also a comment when you do concrete work for table tops how about adding some styrofoam to the bottom to make it lighter? And tale it out when set up.

I've noticed that you're always using one coat of danish oil, but if you read the instructions on the canister, it says that you should apply at least 3. Do you have anything against putting more oil on, or have you simply found that one coat is enough?
@villok1378 жыл бұрын
Maybe he cuts out the other coats idk
@MartinLarsson8 жыл бұрын
@Villok He explicitly states that he uses one coat of Danish Oil.
@Zaihanisme8 жыл бұрын
Martin Larsson, I suspect it's because he doesn't really like glossy and shiny finishes, and might have found anything more than a coat to be too much. This is a guy who sands polished marble to make the surface matte. Which is totally what I'd do too, heh.

Martino, the balusters as installed are used to keep the shelves from twisting in the angle iron frame, yet I wouldn't use them on the ends. Running the balusters length-wise along the front and back edges of the shelves would not only limit twisting but also help keep the shelves from sagging and allow more weight.
