This is Kenny, I hiked with you on and off around miles 50-60. Unfortunately, I had very dense fog for the big overlooks at the end, could literally only see about 20 ft in front of me, so it was great getting to see the epic views in this video! It was awesome meeting you guys out there! This was my first thru-hike, and your videos helped prepare me over the last year or 2, so it was surreal running into you. Great video and even better people!

Awwww, we were wondering how it worked out for you! So glad to hear you whooped it. I hate you missed the views, but I’m glad you got to see it second hand. It was nice chatting with you and I’m so glad the videos helped you prep. Happy Trails, Friend!

@@HomemadeWanderlust I think those are my pale white legs at minute 20 of the video, climbing Heartbreak Ridge. :) By the way, my buddy and I are debating possibly thru hiking the NC Mountain-to-Sea Trail early Spring 2022, or the Colorado Trail around August 2022, looking forward to seeing where you guys end up next!

I think my sister and I must have hiked the FHT at nearly the same time as you. We did it as a 2 car leap frog like you considered for the Pinhoti, to cut food weight and give us a bail out if necessary. She is 62 and I AM 72 so we like to be a bit overly cautious. It would have been great to cross paths and get to say hi. Your photography is fantastic as always.

I’d love to hear more details of your hike. How many miles did you hike per day? Was there a water source every night? Did you have to reserve sites in advance? Did you find all the stairs a challenge? Any ticks or other bugs? Is fall the best time for weather and bugs? This looks like a hike I’d like to try with my sister (I’m 60 and she’s 62). I’m relatively new to backpacking. I’ve hiked Pictured Rocks, Porcupine Mountains and sections of the Ice Age Trail so far.

@@lindaoverkamp4305 We averaged about 10 miles per day. Did do almost 16 on our last day to finish up due to a cold rainy few days. Abundant water sources no need to carry more than what you would drink in half a day max. We started on oct 25 the colors were nice but not yet at max. Fall is probably ideal time, almost no bugs in fact I slept with the mosquito netting down and doors open most nights. The stairs are tough but relatively short and the amazing trail maintenance signage and bridges more thanmake up for the tough climbs.

I live in a dense urban area and I've learned to live with a lot (LOT) of street noise. There's a guy who pulls up outside my building pretty early, either to open his shop or for street cleaning, and he's often blaring Nessun Dorma on his car radio. It's one of my favorite little personality quirks of my town and a lovely way to start the morning, with or without a sunrise.

Anyone else catch Nature's applause at the end of Nessun Dorma, or maybe I just didn't read enough replies? The applause was perfectly timed starting at 33:43 I never really cared much for opera, that is until I heard Paul Potts, the cell phone salesman, perform Nessun Dorma back in 2007: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mp_TXmt9p62Cf80

Absolutely loved when you said, “I wonder who put doggy prints on my new tent”, and Fancy immediately looked away, like, “Not me”. What a beautiful hike, the mountains, the colors, the falls, and the critters. Glad you got out from under the widow makers. Love it when Fancy gets to go off leash. Sorry it rained so much. My sweet granddaughter is allergic to dog dander. And where did we find her when she was missing? Out in the dog pen sleeping with two 140 lb. skinny bloodhounds. Thanks for taking us along. Dixie thank you so much for getting myself and my wife involved with backpacking, I would have never of done it had I not seen your AT journey, no plans on doing that anytime soon!! Last summer we went to 9 different National Parks and Monuments out west, Yellowstone, Glacier , Devils Tower, Teddy Roosevelt Nat'l Pk, , Badlands Nat'l Pk., Mt Rushmore, etc... But that first night we stayed in the APostle Islands Nat'l Pk and it got very cold that night in fact the coldest on the trip, have to tell you another time about the Buffalo next to the tent, so I thought!!! Anyway our favorite park we went to was Crater Lake Nat'l Pk, the blue of that water is hypnotizing, so now that we are both retired we have time for these things, so we are preparing for this summer, probably in Oct, we have too many people in this family with weddings and funerals it eats up much of our time, so thanks again, and pleasant trails to you and yours!!

It’s nice to hear your opinion on the FHT knowing you have hiked the AT. We live close by and took the kids once to dip in our toes and learn just how awful our tent was to carry. We’ve since upgraded many things and can’t wait to get out there and make it ours and our girls (13 and 11) first Thru hike. Our goal is to section hike as much of the AT as possible during summer breaks and probably holidays. Again thanks so much for sharing and making it up here to do the trail. Cheers to many more!

Ahhhhhh (exhaling deeply)..............the Foothills Trail. One of my favorites, I just hiked in in early April. The volunteers do a MAGNIFICENT job of maintaining the trail & campsites. They deserve ALL the glory of those who hike the FT and enjoy its many benefits. I've been enjoying the EE Torrid jacket for years since I hike lots in Florida and it stands up so well to the humidity. In addition I got my jacket in ORANGE which is 100% useful during HUNTING season which in FL matches up with our main hiking season. Killed two birds with one stone, no pun intended.

Very good video Dixie. Truely loved it. I didn't realize Bald knob was so beautiful ❤ or I would have made my own time lapse too. Nice job on that. Taz is cool, I met him yesterday just before hiking up to pinnacle mountain on my way to sassafras mountain. Video soon to come. I'm like many here are looking very forward to hearing your review on the new tent hopefully a side by side comparison to the zpacks. That would be cool.

“I wonder who put doggy prints on my tent?“ And she looks away and says, “I don’t know? I don’t see any other doggie around here so they must’ve ran off!“ 2:15

Once again, Fancy Mae steals the show. Great choice of music for the sunrise and the intro.

I sectioned portions of this when I was a teenager, Table Rock to Sassafras area and Whitewater Falls area. Whitewater falls is what I remember most as one of the highlights and one of the things that got me excited about "real backpacking" then. It was spectacular to me as a "Florida Boy"! Would like to eventually through hike the entire thing. Was not capable or aware of through hiking that much back then. Later on I sectioned GA and NC/TN area of the AT up to parts of VA. I know I could take a week and do the Foothills, so may try that out as a starter for doing the AT, BMK, or Pinhoti.

Just finished thru-hiking the Foothills Trail with my 67 year old father. It was a great trip, but slightly more difficult than I anticipated due to the weather being in the 20s the first half (LOL, that's a bit nippy for a Florida Boy). Beautiful scenery and fall colors. We had planned it for the leaves turning, but didn't expect the sudden cold front down into the 20s that made us rethink our gear and some of our plans. That made us carry a bit more weight and made it a bit harder to rest. The steps for the through hike were pretty intense on the knees for people not used to them (the only elevation we had to "train" is the pedestrian bridge, bridge over the river, and parking garages, haha). I would try to do more steps in retrospect and would have done trekking poles. Fantastic experience, however, and loved our week of adventure. With the extra side trails probably did 95-100 miles total over 6 nights/7 days, which is pretty slow, but enjoyable. I would probably have done it in 5 and tried to avoid a re-supply, but it made for a decent vacation.

Also, will shout-out Taz, the guide/shuttle too. He was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and funny! Great guy for any trip you have planned or re-supply.

I’m a Professor Faculty Of Medicine UBC. I too had problems with seasonal allergies aggravated by a down sensitivity. The anti-allergy meds and synthetics helped but problem didnt go away until I dramatically reduced my salt intake. Salt(sodium) is very high in most backpacking meals and even most convenience food snacks so I used to eat a lot of it while hiking. It’s a myth that you need extra salt while hiking. We North Americans eat about 10 times as much salt as the human body actually needs even in hotter weather. As you consume and retain salt you retain extra water which causes or aggravates puffiness, nasal congestion, seasonal allergies, asthma, swelling of hands and feet, and higher blood pressure. By dramatically reducing my salt intake (as well as using seasonal allergic meds and synthetics) I not only elimated my puffiness and asthma but dropped my blood pressure back into the normal range so that I no longer take the two anti-hypertensive prescriptions my family doctor had me on. Have never felt better. So you might want to look at meals and snacks with minimal salt and give that a try (both on and off trail). However, you do you of course. Thanks for all the inspirational videos over the last few years. :)

That was awesome, especially, as I'm sure others have said, the timelapse shots to Nessun Dorma. Like the shots of armadillos and what look like salamanders too! Thanks for uploading Dixie. 😎
