hey all you home menders! We've got rotted wood. We could replace it but no! Dustin shows us how to make the rot look like it's been replaced, fix it, seal it and move on. Believe it or not, you can say Dustin "went to college" to learn home repair, From the University of Kentucky to the coast of Virginia Beach...you can watch over Dustin's shoulder as.......
Bonus** Dustin shares how and where he learned all his skills.

As many people have commented below, you either have to cut away the rotted wood completely or use the expensive wood hardener on the raw soft wood area if you can't cut any wood for whatever reason. Bondo will push out ,pop out after several months.Also if you can, drill holes in the wood where the Bondo is going to go .This allows the Bondo to "key" into the wood , or lock into the wood better.

Excellent input… A popular misconception… As long as the water has been stopped, and the exterior component has been coated with exterior semi gloss and sealed up with conch… The rot will stop.

Great repair Dustin! Couple of bondo tips, I use a scrap piece of dry wall as a mixing pallet,wait to add the hardener until you are at the repair site,it hardens quickly. Mix in small batches to have less waste. A plastic spreader works great and the hardened bondo is easy to remove,I can’t tell you how many metal putty knives I’ve ruined. Also if it’s a deep repair bondo glass is a good first coat as it has fiberglass strands in it for strength and use regular bondo for a smooth finish coat. Welcome back sir!

Thank you so much Pete and thank you for the tip to my man. I was checking out that glass one. That is good to know and I just don’t work well with plastic therefore I had to add a 10 bucks to every repair LOL people don’t seem to mind it and I look better with that metal knife 😃 Thank you so much my friend

In my experience, bondo is a temporary fix if the wood isn't first treated with boron (borax) to kill any fungus and then coated with a liquid epoxy resin to stabilize the base wood. There are kits available on line for this type of repair and I've used them with good success. Bondo only has always fallen out after time.

Interesting, thanks, @Keith Canfield. From watching/reading elsewhere, it seems that at least one shut chip away the rotting wood to get to all solid and go from there (even if just Bondo, as here).

Great job. One additional step if the wood is “punky” or dry rot is to use a wood hardener before you bondo.

@@homemend, yeah, I agree with rodney. If you know that the wood is rotten, then that bondo wont stay on there long if the base that it sits on is not solid. The wood will continue to rot away while the bondo stays. Then, after some time, it might look like you did a crappy job, but only because the wood is still rotten, not because your work was bad.
@DanielinLaTuna

@@homemendRodney and SF make a good point. If anyone is wondering what a good wood fiber hardener (consolidator I think is what it’s called), Abatron makes one. They also have a two part epoxy filler, but it is much more expensive than Bondo.

The one thing though I would like to mention is that I have used the Bondo All-Purpose product in making repairs to my home, but it did not last through the cold weather season, so I have applied the Bondo Wood Filler instead as it is designed speciafically for interior or exterior wood applications.

@@homemend Okay, yes, I am sure that the colder temperatures would make a difference because I tried an experiment with All-Purpose Bondo last fall. I ground-our several knot holes on some pine trim boards on my house and filled them with Bondo. I noticed in the spring that most of the holes I filled with Bondo where the knots were did not hold and the Bondo fell out.

I love how you tell stories along with explaining the repair. I have sons but the world we live in now it’s hard to find other men encouraging each other to be “men” if that makes any sense? Thank you😊

I have used the bodo wood repair trick for years. As it sets up I find a sharp paint scraper works great for leveling off the hardened filler. In severely damaged areas I install drywall screws which will be inbeded in the bondo to ensure a lasting repair.

That tip to use the cap as a mixing cup was a life saver. I would have never thought of that and the instructions don't say to do this.

Hi Angie. Thank you so much! I worked for UK for about three years and then another three years I worked for touchstone properties on Hagerman. I was a military kid and very nomadic in my life so no I’m not still there, I got antsy and split for the coast :-)
