Key word: Reality Tv. I know someone who was on an HGTV show and the main character/Host...is filmed doing a couple things, but for the most part, they hire a local contractor and their crew. This individual who everyone thought was so involved, sat on their phone off camera for hours on end, only filming short segments of doing actual work. This could be hammering a couple nails into something, or scraping paint, putting up 2-3 tiles on the wall, then the camera cuts out and the contractors and crew finish the job. We were asked to be there to help, and we spent 5 days sitting there "just in case". We did a lot of trash/garbage removal, cleanup, etc. Not much else. It's not what you think.

@@hockeyheather3321 From the homeowner's point of view I don't mind it if the "famous host" doesn't do beans as long as the contractor(s) doing the work demand meticulous work from their crews and follow or go beyond building codes.

I'm actually shocked that HGTV sponsored this show. They too should've done their homework on Alison and Donovan. If HGTV overlooked their credentials doesn't this throw into doubt all of the other home improvement shows on their channel? Apparently, the homeowners who bought properties from this show are all suing. HGTV is being sued too. I've been researching the problems that happened between Alison, Donovan, and the city of Chicago. According to buildings department records, “Windy City Rehab” projects violated city code by: Working without permits at 11 different properties. Working beyond the scope of pulled permits at 11 properties. Failure to comply with safety codes related to issues such as electrical wiring. In early April, two different electrical code violations were issued at one property. Failure to contact the city to obtain certificates of occupancy at two different properties. Hiring workers who are not licensed, certified or registered by the city at 11 properties. Lying on a permit application at 11 properties. Failure to correct a substantial “defect, error or deficiency” at one property. Performing work that poses an “immediate or imminent threat” to the safety of workers or the public at 11 properties. This list is extensive. For Alison to go on TV and cry crocodile tears that she didn't know wreaks disingenuous to me. According to Alison she is "just the designer." She is just the designer visiting every property and she is not aware that she and Donovan hired workers who were not licensed and certified? Hogwash. Both Alison and Donovan were cutting corners to maximize profits and she knew what she was doing. Since Alison's name is tied to the LLC she is responsible for knowing. I don't doubt Donovan stole money but how could he steal over $800,000 and Alison not know about it? "He's the finance guy and I'm the designer" isn't going to cut it. Now that the owners from previous properties are suing Alison & Donovan for shoddy construction is again the fault of both. Alison was working without permits at 11 different properties. She can't feign naiveté. Alison was a willing a culpable party to the infractions. Alison and Donovan were penny wise but pound foolish and they got caught. Still, I hope that Alison will learn from her mistakes and that those workers whom have not gotten paid will be well compensated. Don't just think about yourself, Alison, think about all of the other people your misbehavior affected.

I don’t understand, wouldn’t the buyers have an inspection done before they closed on the house and wouldn’t the inspector realize the roof wasn’t redone and that the shower leaked, etc? Are they able to close on a house in the middle of renovations? If that’s what they did then that was ridiculous. What about the city inspectors? If you change the plumbing or other things they have to sign off and wouldn’t they notice a shower leaking? WTF happened here?

I’ve only seen one episode and realized they had no idea what they were doing. At the end she was left with a home she was trying to sell way over market value, because their construction costs went way over budget, due to them not doing a proper inspection. I remember when we had problems after moving into a house we had built. In our case, the plumber didn't seal the drain in the bathtub, which caused it to leak into the downstairs back hallway. I called the contractor, and the plumber came out that day to fix the problem. The water stain on the ceiling was fixed three months later. Everything was fixed eventually.

Hi@@HELL0NESSA, I like my neighborhood. I just questioned what these people do for a living to pay for +$1million homes because most of the "early gentrifiers" can't afford a house for that price tag either. The people buying these homes are not all doctors or high end lawyers, and if they have a business what is it the sell? Sometimes I wonder if they're doing something illegal.

House rehabs are tricky, there are excellent flippers out there that do the job properly, with quality materials, reputable contractors, etc. but sadly, as flipping houses has become increasingly popular everyone thinks they can do it... that's when you get flippers that use cheap junk materials, cut corners, pick contractors that give them the lowest quotes not caring if they are reputable or not, etc. then whoever buys that property is stuck with a million issues. I've even heard of flippers doing modifications that require a permit WITHOUT acquiring the permit first... that becomes a huge issue for oblivious buyers.

For "reality TV", the work just needs to LOOK good on camera. What's behind that new drywall is anybody's guess. As long as nothing falls apart before taping the show is complete, that's all they care about.

@George L I realize that, HOWEVER... a home inspector only checks for things like structural, foundation, HVAC, electrical, plumbing... a home inspector DOES NOT look at say... cabinets, tiling, flooring, fixtures, lighting and how cheap it may be or whether it was properly and professionally installed or not. Also, if a home is newly renovated and NO ONE has lived in it since the renovation, some issues will only appear after some use, like if a bathtub was not properly sealed... those moisture issues and potential mold will only become apparent in time. Plenty of examples of issues that are not apparent at the time of purchase and will not be detected or even within the realm of things a home inspector looks for... that is why flippers who do the work cheaply are so dangerous, especially for new and young buyers who are not experienced enough to know what to look for and the difference between professional work and work done cheaply.

@@eattherich9215 An improperly installed faucet, for example, can cause devastating and VERY costly damage to your property. A cheap light fixture is not only a fire hazard, it can also cause damage to your entire home's wiring which can be very costly to replace. An improperly sealed window can let moisture in and cause mold to grow, which is not only life threatening but also costly to solve because not only are you going to have to get rid of the mold, but you're also going to have to check ALL windows and doors in your home and potentially have to reseal or even replace some of them, if not all. Those are only a few examples of things you consider unimportant that can cause devastating and very costly issues... so maybe not unimportant at all.

THEN after it was, they didn't want to pay !! These ppl are crazy !! I have no doubt that all the damages that were done to this house, they did themselves , b/c they had buyers remorse from spinning the money. These ppl NEVER wanted the house and they took these contractors and the designer through pure hell. Not to mention, AFTER, they came to an agreement on a price, the BUYERS are the ones who kept stalling. I'm telling you. The buyers are the one who messed this house up !! It should be written that IF....a buyer want to buy a house BEFORE it is done, then THEY need to provide their own contractors ! I hope the shows countersue their tales.......

It would be more appealing to the masses if she took some of the post war ranches built and put a second floor on them. Am watching the black painted house in Bridgeport. She ruined that house with the pant. The brick looked in good shape. What was she thinking? Now it’s an eyesore.

On most HGTV presentations, the TV personality does a few things on camera and the bulk of the project is done by hired contractors. This isn't the only program being sued for shoddy workmanship. The work needs only to look glitzy and glamorous, and once the taping of the show is done the owners have to deal with it. Sometimes it's a good deal and sometimes not.

@lynnaegink
@lynnaegink 4 жыл бұрын
Excuse you, yes I did watch the the video and it did not specify whether or not they asked the contractors to come back several times to fix the problems. Maybe they did, and that was left out, but the first thing I would do, is give them several well-documented chances to come out and rectify all the problems. Then I would go to a lawsuit. I don't have a problem with filing a lawsuit, but I thought the amount was a little excessive.
@clarkclarke

@lynnaegink
@lynnaegink 4 жыл бұрын
@@clarkclarke I didn't have to see it in person!!!!! In my opinion, if you have some leaks and repairs that need to be done afterwards, you call them back and tell them to get back out there and fix it. Now if they decline or won't come out to do it and you've exhausted all possible ways of getting this rectified, then file a lawsuit. I'm not sure if they are going to get over a million dollars for a few leaks that are going on in that house.
