When Lynn and I booked this Alaska trip with Fantasy RV Tours, there were several items on the itinerary that stood out. In this video you will see one of those, which was Halibut fishing in Homer. And, you'll also see another excursion that we booked ourselves through Talon Air Services, which was a definite highlight of our trip as well. I have Talon Air Services contact info at the bottom of this description.
Our first stop in this video is on the Homer Spit at Heritage RV Park. The Homer Spit is a narrow stretch of land that protrudes 4.5 miles out into Kachemak Bay. The spit is also home to the Homer Boat Harbor which is where our Halibut Fishing Tour launched from. Heritage RV Park is about half out on the spit. Our RV's were positioned right along the shoreline overlooking the Kachemak Bay. Amazing views! The Homer Spit consists of a multitude of nice restaurants, shops, tour guides, marina, and a few drinking establishments including the Salty Dawg Saloon.
Fantasy RV Tours booked a Halibut fishing excursion, for our group only, aboard the "Whistler" with captain Avery Ault at the wheel. Most of our group went on the trip but the boat had a limited capacity which was not quite able to accommodate our entire group. The excursion lasted the entire day. As I recall, we navigated about 40 miles to get to our successful fishing location. Lynn had a great day of fishing, even catching a couple for me to fill my limit of three. The Whistler crew were very accommodating as well as entertaining.
The crew cleaned our catch on the way back to the harbor. The Halibut was filleted, packaged, and divided among the group. Our Wagon Masters prepared some Halibut for the group later in the trip and it was absolutely delicious!
As we leave Homer, we backtrack our route most of the way to get to Diamond M Ranch RV Resort near Kenai. This was a very nice campground with a large firepit which allowed our group to gather around the fire at night.
As I mentioned in a previous video, Lynn and I are big fans of "Keep Your Daydream" (KYD) which is a You Tube channel hosted by Marc and Tricia Leach. It was while watching one of their episodes of their trip to Alaska that we learned about Talon Air Services which is located not too far from our campground. Talon Air Services has several excursions that they offer. We chose the Salmon Fishing/Bear Viewing trip. As we discussed this upcoming trip with some of our fellow travelers, Tommy and Ron reached out to Talon Air and were able to join us. Sharing this experience with our new friends, Tommy and Ron, made the trip extra special!
In this video you will see highlights of our trip including our float plane flight to and from our fishing location; us catching our limit of salmon; a mother bear and her three cubs walking the shore directly in front of us while we're fishing; and our fishing guide cooking and serving part of our catch for shore lunch. It was an AMAZING ADVENTURE that we will talk about forever and will be forever engrained in our minds.
In the next video we travel to Anchorage followed by an eventful stop in Denali where we raft 11 miles down the Nenana River and a take side-by-side excursion into the mountains to watch the midnight sunset.
THANKS FOR WATCHING!
