Planning a basement remodel and had a few questions, but I'll post them on the relevant videos. Do you know of any alternatives to DMX that you use in the basement flooring that's available in USA? Should you frame on top of DMX 1 Step (which is available in the US but is fairly expensive) or just use pressure treated bottom boards and use DMX 1 step inside of the framing? I'm looking to do both a carpeted area and a vinyl (maybe electrically heated after seeing your bathroom video)...what subfloor option would you recommend that's available in the US?

Jeff, You are without a doubt the best, honest, caring content providers on the net. I have never been on the safety police but seeing as how I’m in this particular field, I would like to protect you so you can keep making videos. The laser level near your face should be treated as a nail gun with the safety depressed. A direct hit for roughly 2 seconds can do permanent damage at the wavelengths used in construction and obviously the response is, well who would do that, BUT scanning your head back and fourth with repeated microsecond exposures is just playing with fire, ESPECIALLY when sight is important to the joy and knowledge you bring to people. Please just consider it and don’t get upset about the comment! Thanks for your help making the industry better!

Hi Jeff! I must say I appreciate ALL of your channels and videos so much. My father, an avid DIYer who made a point to try and pass those skills off to his children, passed away in May of this year. My partner and I just bought our first home and are taking on some projects that seem large and nerve racking! Hi Jeff, Thank you for your educational videos-they've been incredibly helpful! I have a question I hope you can advise me on, as I haven’t found a clear answer elsewhere. I plan to finish my basement by using a dimple mat with laminate flooring on top. How can I anchor the wall frame (2x4) into the concrete floor without compromising the integrity of the dimple mat by drilling through it? If I frame on concrete with treated wood, that would block the airflow from under the dimple mat, wouldn't it? Thank you for your time! NN

"When you pre-drill the holes in the OSB subfloor use Tap Con screws. Prior to driving the screws into the concrete dip each screw into a polyurethane sealant before inserting the fastener into the bottom plates of the wall. Since the Tap Con screws have two different threads (a cutting and tracer thread) the sealant will be deposited on the membrane as it goes through. Hi Jeff, I am the one person that is glad the toilet bolts are so long. I use these bolts as tee nuts in my tee slot on the mitre saw, table saw, drill stand, router table, and my hand held router base. I don’t use them to put toilets on because I have not needed to change one of those for a long time. Those bolts are perfect to run in the tee slots and I forgot one place the CNC table.

Yeah but you can buy the long bolts without buying a new toilet everytime... Toilets should come with short bolts. If you need long bolts for your toilet you should buy them separatly. -Someone who hates long toilet/sink tab bolts

Great tip about using the nailer. I watched one of my fathers workers shoot a nail right through his hand while rebuilding his office as a kid. Valuable lesson right there.

2:11:00 crown is one of my favorite DIY jobs. Having an older house, I worked in a step where after the first piece is up, take a scrap piece about 2' long and cut the corner to the right angle/bevel. Then hold that scrap piece into the corner up against the piece already in place. If the angle is off, adjust the saw and re-cut the end off the scrap piece. Keep adjusting the cut until the scrap piece is tight, then use that saw setting to cut the first end of the piece that's going up. You can repeat this step for the other corners. ...also Top Gun 300 is a great painters' caulk.

Watching him I've done a few things myself. I was never a DIYer but with youtube you learn. As a teacher I learned that students usually say they are not "math people" and thus invite failure and apathy. Just start doing little things, it'll grow on you. Right now I can't stop watching these videos and doing little projects at home.

Hearing you talk about 1/8 or 7/8 of an inch gives me the shivers. Today I installed a wallshelf and aligned it to the 10/254 of an inch. Well actually, I just aligned it to 1millimeter. Necessary? No - but boy do I like working as precise as possible. Even 1/10 of an inch is still 2.54mm. If you want to work precise, use the metric system!

I was just questioning the direction in which you connected your fittings and pipe together for heat runs . They usually run male ends facing the outlet to avoid friction and disturbing or (cutting down) smooth air flow . Air flow should run over instead of running into connected joints

I live in Texas, where basements do not exist. However, I live in a 1.5 story home with a single room loft that is pretty much a finished attic. Are there any plans to release videos on how to approach an expansion project or any finished attic? Central air may have to be moved, hot water heater may have to be moved, sub flooring, and the possibility of dealing with bracing to the rafters. Thanks guys!

Hey Jeff. You’ve been on my TV in the basement for about 2 weeks now. Watching every single video while I turn my basement into a beautiful living space. It’s was already converted into a living space prior to me buying the house. The basement was done about 15 years ago and I basically ripped it all out. You on my TV and me being a DIY’er. Jeff your videos are fantastic. I'm in Ottawa, planning to finish my own basement of my new house and will be using your incredibly helpful tips. To the upset contractors...lol. The people watching these videos are most likely already practical minded (like myself) and would be doing it themselves anyway, so these videos just helps do a better job. With that logic...people should stop creating fancy cooking programs. They will put chefs out of work and close restaurants. Keep up the good work!

HOW DO YOU KNOW SO MUCH! I am I'm the process of renovating my basement during this COVID pandemic, and the framing for my basement is done, ( not perfectly) currently in the process of insulation, vapour barrier and drywall. It's an older house so nothing in the basement was level to begin with. Its all so overwhelming and frustrating, but I am trying to get through it. The dry wall nothing is really flush and I have uneven gaps, which I'm sure will be a pain in the you know what, when I have to mud and sand. Oh also installed a bathroom shower base which was hell, tried to self level the section for the basement ofcourse didn't make level for the base so I'm shimming it and still isn't perfect, but I've accepted it. I don't know why I am commenting all this information just needed to vent to someone who knows what they're doing. On a good note it is all one hell of a learning experience, took me 3-4 hours to install 1 of 4 basement windows, but I am happy about it, also made some stairs for the first time, took 6 hours, but after finishing that was all satisfying. So yah, that's where I am right now. Thanks for reading this comment hope you and your family are staying safe, cannot wait to know as much information as you do. Will save me soo much time!!

@@johnd9357 At the end of the day, the renovation is completed. We have a tenant move in, and everything is going good. Knock on wood. There is alot of things, I have learned during this experience. Every sense this project, I have been eager to learn more and do whatever I can to make something even the simplest things like making coat hangers out of a piece of wood and some hooks, is just so satisfying. It was alot of frustration working on the basement, but definitely worth it. Having a lower back injury makes things hard to do, but I make it work and go at my own pace. There is no rush, just have to take your time and sometimes step back and look at things differently. At the end of the day, someone wanted to rent out the place, and I can collect a nice beneficial income twords the mortgage. Trust me when I say this, if I can do it , ANYONE CAN.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this to you yet but its actually a bad idea to wipe your solder joints with flux while its still hot. Flux can pull the solder out of the fitting and cause a pinhole leak generally on bigger applications like 1 inch and 1 1/2 pipe but its still not great practice. Thanks for all of the videos though, your'e my go to channel when it comes to renovations!

25:20 You also want to use grit cloth on the valve. If there's dirt or grease or really anything the solider won't take. An ounce of preparation goes along way. Especially when it's a 6 inch copper line with 130psi behind it. That was a fun day.

Can't tell you how helpful this channel is!!!! If I was using foam board on the exterior walls and then wood frame with batt insulation on the inside would install the foam board down to the floor and then butt the dimple and plywood up to it and then frame on top of the plywood/dimple mat? I figured this would be the way to go because it would keep any moisture that went down the wall under the dimple layer also. Does that make sense. Thanks again for all your content, simply awesome!

Wow, you guys made that look so hard. The way I learned to build walls: *Install baseplate *Lay top-plate on floor next to base-plate *Use speed square to scribe lines on both base- and top-plate for every wall joist (16" oc or whatever) location, putting an "x" where joist goes, next to line *Set top plate on its side and build wall on ground, nailing joists into top-plate where all the "x"'s are along scribed lines *Measure gaps between joists and cut fire-blocks * Measure 32" (or whatever) from bottom of each outer joist, then pop a line on all joists *Install fire-blocks along popped line *Stand wall up and set it on top of base plate, and as one guy holds balance, other nails joists to base-plate *Now that wall is up, square/level as needed, and secure it in place. This way you're not holding plate above head, muscling joists into place, screwing with level on EVERY joists, etc. Scribing both plates together and making sure joists are straight eliminates lots of struggle and frustration.

I love the scope of this video. You cover so many different techniques for each task. I also appreciated when you get a bit cavalier and 'eyeball' it... When it comes to penetrations in engineered joists you pointed out that you could not 'bend' the short piece... the real reason that is acceptable is that the top and bottom chord are mostly in tension and compression, and is not weakened by the lack of webbing.

Hi Jeff, I know the length of the toilet bolts drive you crazy, but they are very useful as "T" bolts in woodworking and the extra length is useful then. It won't make you feel any better but I thought you should know. The finish on the bar looks great, I don't think anyone could come up with a better result and all the work you have done is to a very high standard.

I did this to my prior basement about 8 years ago, but had to include plumbers solder for each of the concrete screws in the floor. It was to reseal the plastic vapor guard the screws holes you drilled punctured. It was a real pain doing that too.

In case anyone is wondering, the purpose of the long drill bit is too absorb torque. Keeps things from breaking. Traditional wisdom says to use nails when you need sheering strength, use screws when you need pulling strength. There are times in life when you should use nails, but the screws of today are not the screws of 40 years ago

Rare to find someone who can speak so naturally, clearly and fluently about his work. The pace was also excellent, so it kept me interested for over 3 hours. Excellent video. I wish you could spend a bit more time talking about wall insulation, framing around the outside walls, and the possible need for ventilation under the DMX flooring. What if moisture still builds up there and has no place to escape? Opinions? I am planning also to use the same DMX dimpled plastic but I was thinking to install a layer of aluminium foil right on the slab expecting that will reflect back the radiating heat from the above. Reflective heat works well and only when you have an air gap. That dimpled plastic is excellent to provide that necessary airgap. I would argue that would add couple R values to the insulation properties of the floor at very low cost. Maybe I am wrong but I would like to hear your thoughts. I am not sure I understand the purpose of that golden colored foil that is glued to one side of the laminate floor underlay. In my view that has no purpose since there is no air gap between the laminate and the subfloor. And yes, what happened with your eye? First I thought you painted your eye to make it "interesting" and I was expecting some joke about it but you never explained. Did you get into a bar fight with Mike Holmes? :-) Anyway, I like your video 100 times more that what MIke Holmes does . You are down to earth without creating the impression that there is only one way to do things and everybody else's work is crap. Thank you for this outstanding educational video.
