When we lived in Florida, I went through the same frustration you did. It was right after a hurricane came through and ripped all our screens. At the time, it was impossible to get screen guys out in a timely manner, as you can expect after a storm. After fighting with round spines, I stopped at a home that had a crew working on their screens and asked one of the guys working. He showed me the correct way and showed me which spline to buy. He also said the round spline was mainly for window screens and that they only used the flat style as it held the screen in better with the "c" style grooves. I will say this once you get the hang of it ....its actually easier than trying to cram a round spline into the groove. Excellent video! This is an example of real-world issues that we DIYers deal with. 😊

In my handyman biz I just had a bunch of calls to replace screen. It takes a bit to clear the confusion on the different screens and spline size. One tip is to use the “ Big Box” app on your phone (since nobody there knows what’s what). Product page in the app usually has the size of the spline on the product page.

This is the first video I watched for research, it’s not the same type of frame on the house I’m working on, so I almost skipped watching this. I’m so glad I didn’t skip it. Not only for the relatable frustration, but I learned a lot. Great video. Hey Lol I just saw this video and was getting ready to tell you how to do it. And tell you you had the right spline to begin with. I didn’t know how well you would take my advice as a woman. I just went through this process because a tree fell and took out half of my screen enclosure. I had to piece it back together, half the size and re-screen it it took me a minute to figure out how to put the spline in the right way too. But by the end of your video, I saw you figured it out. 😁

Do treated wood, instead of aluminum, heavy duty mesh and staple into the wood and double secure with wood trim to hide the staples. Works for our house in NE, near the lake, big winds and storms. I built a 'Catio' last year, made the framework out of the same extrusion from Lowe's & HD, and used the Flat spline you finally found. I learned the hard way (like you) that the round spline is only good for window screens, not patio screens. Also, there are heavier weight screen cloths that are a tad darker, but have a thicker feel to them. That works Great in your patio and gives more shade effect One more thing. Get a tool that has the plastic (Nylon) wheels instead of the metal one. I was cutting too much screen with the metal one. You can pull the screen cloth very taught when installing it with the flat spline. Almost drum tight actually. Love working with that stuff... Once I figured out how. 😊

It's truly amazing how many times in my renovation of three houses with build dates spanning 90 years that I get a notification relevant to a current project. I'm replacing the screen material in all our windows. 1. They're 25 years old and the sun has faded them very nasty, 2. Our dog likes to communicate with us by knocking on the screens and they are all shredded. So I ordered the heavy plastic mesh "pet proof" which is much thicker than prior mesh and after reading multiple bad reviews where people couldn't get them to stay in standard screens I figured it needed size smaller spline which after hours of research I found on line by the foot. It's not only thinner but textured too. I worked like a charm for me. Best rule for using the screen spline roller is to NEVER use the concave end because many of them can cut your screen material and kept a dull standard screw driver for starting and ending the spline inset.

So, after your last video I also wondered why they gave you two wheels on the screen tool. And something I found for windows was "the flat side is for metal screen", to help shove and shape it into the channel. A good video as always though, and it's nice to see someone admit they were wrong and show you how they fixed it. A lot of channels would just go ahead and fix it off camera and leave viewers going "Well I tried that and it didn't work!"

The last time I rescreened windows for my parents’ house was about 40 years ago when I was around 15 years old. The only problems I had was accidentally cut the screen with the tool on the wrong side and not getting the horizontal bar in the middle of the screen for a couple windows so it looked all janky but my parents didn’t care as long as the screens had no holes. So now it’s time to do them again, wish me luck.🤞

I can’t imagine having to do that vertically!! If you have a piece of old spline, take that with you to get the right size…

Thanks for keeping it real. So many KZbinrs don't show the struggles. As the old saying goes... "Construction is a series of controlled screw-ups." 😃 And it's impossible for the big box stores to be experts on everything they sell, So you're sometimes better off going to a specialist or a local Mom & Pop hardware store.

I do as much work as possible on my rig myself in order to avoid huge shop bills. I can say with confidence that I always do the work correctly.... because I usually have to do it twice. 🥴 (I say that as I'm currently waiting on my new engine fan to arrive because I screwed up.) This is the reason I watch this channel more than any other when it comes to DIY. You are humble and always own up to your mistakes because you know they always provide a teachable moment. I know I've learned more from my mistakes than anything else in life, and I would be wary of anyone who claimed to be "perfect everytime" on the first try. 😄

Flat spline is all I have ever used here in Florida. Also putting the spline in a bucket of warm water makes it even easier to install. Or leave it in the sun for a bit before installing.

I got to laugh at the end of your video. It was Dejan vu all over again:) I had to rescreen my pool enclosure. It had flat spline so I had to figure out how to install it. After much frustration as you had, I figured it out once I got the correct spline and how to install it. Thanks for all the great videos!

This is funny, I told a couple guys at HomeDepot the same thing about two weeks ago. That the channel they have doesn't say what size spine it requires and they have four sizes of spline!
