For half wall, you can cut your bottom plate 1 1/2in short and get tour last stud to go all the way into your joist assembly so you have it attached on the whole height of the joist. Teally helps

I bought a house with cheap vinyl plank flooring throughout. There’s some spongy and soft spots in the hall and by the water heater. I can’t see any water damage -? So to fix this I was thinking could pull up the bad area - repair the sub floor , and reuse the flooring if it’s not damaged. If it is - i could pull up the flooring in one of the bedrooms and use that - then carpet that bedroom. Does that sound reasonable ? I can’t replace all the flooring - it runs continuously throughout all the rooms.

sorry, IDK where to ask my ques as a new member just today...love your videos, very informative and makes things simple to understand. I am renovating a 20 yr old deck, original was pressure-treated, but 5 years ago painted over with gray deck paint. Trying to remove to bare wood to refinish, clean and then seal with Olympic products. I am 90% done removing paint, but paint is embedded into wood grain. [some parts too smooth, does not sand well, and does not peel]. Tried SuperStripper, hand held scraper along grain, and also Ryobi belt sander 36 and 40 grit = no joy----paint will just not come out or off. Any suggestions? (been at this for two weeks with some time off between. Deck is mostly sunny 90 degrees daytime, no labor early a.m. due to noise//neighbors (Connecticut USA)--Thank you (very much) -Jack (can send private email if u want)

A very large tree fell right in the middle of my house and put a huge hole in my roof. I live in Maine in a small summer cottage converted into a year round house. It was built in the late 1950s - early 1960s. It is finally being repaired starting with the roof. I have been watching with an uneducated eye but wanting to learn. The ice and water shield has been put on and I was wondering if there is only one correct way to put it on. One person told me it should be secured with washers and nails. It was attached with staples. One last question. How much ventilation should there be? I only know the house is only 800 square feet. I apologize for lack of information. I do really like watching your shows! Any help would be appreciated 🔨🪚🪜.

At 14:55 you mentioned how to secure a 1/2 wall. I was also thinking threaded rod from the top plate, down a bay and attached to the blocking. This was there is downward pull on the top plate as well. You're thoughts?

not needed. once you add plywood to both sides it is not going anywhere as long as you use structural screws on the bottom plate into joists. Cheers!

I would think that on 2x4 walls, that it would be better to fir the studs out to 2x6

I really love your DIY videos. I am seeking some assistance on my new project. I plan to remodel my basement standing shower. I have small standing shower now which is over a tiled floor that is on basement concrete. I have dismantled my old standing shower and found that my drain hole is about 15"X15" away from the wall. I may have to reposition it to line-up with shower base I am buying. Do you have any video on how to install shower tub on a tiled floor and also on how to reposition drain pipe in the basement that has concrete around the drain pipe?

When replacing only the lower half of drywall due to a flood, do you fill the tapered edge and let it dry 1st and then tape? Like a butt joint? I think this is called a bastard joint. South Carolina.

My husband did not have time to teach me and he has gone on to Glory. My sister needs help! She wants to replace her single front door with transom ( one each side) with a salvage double door. The thing is, she can’t find anyone willing to do it. It’s either too small a job or too much trouble. I suggested she do it herself how hard can it be to build a door frame and hang a door? Where can she find good information on how to do this? I saw a few on installing a pre-hung door, and some on building an interior frame but nothing on building a custom frame and hanging a double door. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

What about building a brick facade around the front and one side of a single family dwelling. Or maybe some lighter weight brick-look product. I like a brick house painted white so that's the effect I'm going for. Is it a code issue?

Hi I have a question on basement walls insulation. If I use foam board directly on the ciment basement (inside the house) and then frame and then batt insulation would this be considered double vapor barrier if I put the plastic vapor barrier after the BATT insulation? I ask because I was told the insulation board is a vapor barrier aswell. If yes is this per code? thks

if you are referring to the use of a 36" blade then combined with really wet mud applied by a roller, then my opinion is you will see that work from a mile away once it dries and shrinks. just a great gimmick for the camera. Cheers!

Just paid 12k (all of our savings) to have 87 dw sheathed & sided. Had to have emergency major surgery during the process and tropical storm in NC (sept) came home to soaked home and vinyl doesn’t move at all. GC thinks it’s a great job. His insurance is useless. I have a special needs brother who lives with me, who will be back from my mom’s in a month (he’s there while I recover from surgery). I’m also disabled. Sill plate, window framing, insulation, Sheetrock beet replacement. Rear door leaked as well (he installed. Workers stood on HVAC and dented entire things. That quote is 600. I can’t fix so warrant will be voided. It is brand new also. I was try to get home updated to take care of brother til we both pass. What can I do? Attorneys cost 500-600 per hr and my guess is he has nothing. Folks at church have good reference for him then after we had issue voiced they had issues as well.

Did you try reaching out to the bbb? Or I would start with having your conversation with the GC in writing. Plainly say in an email or chat -this is what I’m unhappy with - picture provided- and ask what solution the gc can offer. And then go from there. After you find that what he can offer isn’t to your standards you can either go back and forth with him and tell him you’re going to go to the bbb with this complaint, see if that changes his response or just go to the bbb.
