Hi ,I am an experienced tiler 32 yrs tiling in NZ and use Ultracolour.Just mix enough grout to do one wall at a time, start sponging down what you started after 10 minutes even if you are still grouting, just stop and do it,then carry on grouting.after you have sponged it down twice ,wait 20 minutes and buff the tiles with an old towel.

Good advice. This is great grout but you can only do small areas at a time. I work this grout out of a 2 gallon bucket so I don't mix too much at once. It is nice because it doesn't wash the color out.

@@Jeremyschannel1Just get that old grout, & seal it later. This seems like a nightmare & not worth the risk. Sometimes, things happen while your grout is hazing up, anyways, and the old stuff you can somewhat get wet & rework a bit, if there's some issue in an area. This sounds like it's set up like cement, and FAST. I just bought some the other day. I'm glad I found this video.

You can also wet (lightly!) the tiles down before using the rapid setting grout, it'll save you some time. If you have a problem with it getting too hard find a spacer or tooth brush butt to score excess grout out, as long as they are the size of the grout joints or slightly bigger.

I just did my first floor job where I needed grout this past weekend. I didn’t watch this video beforehand and I did use the high tech stuff he said not to use. I am a beginner and it worked great! I think the part that made it work was that I watched other videos on how to grout and the best advice I got was to do small areas at a time. Mix small amounts of grout so it’s all used up in one or two sections and for each section, clean it. I only made about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart at a time.

Thanks for sharing this video. I saw this and the comments just before grouting bathroom wall tiles. I'm so glad i saw it. I'm not very experienced at tiling/grouting however somehow made this product work. This is how i did it 1) Used Cold water when mixing this grout. 2) Hand mixed the grout. I had seen a separate video about how this guy mixed it with a high rpm drill and heated it up. 3) Worked in sections. Did a wall of 7ft x 3ft. Cleaned. Then moved on to the next section. Painful..i know. 4) Mixed half a bag first (5lbs) and then the rest of the bag. 5) Cleaning the bucket after the previous grout had hardened seemed to work the best. Knock the dried grout out of it by turning it upside down. Something i noticed was when i had it mixed perfectly, there was a shine on the grout. That lasted me well over 45min of working time with it. I did make a bad batch and it lasted about 15min or less. All i kept thinking about of 'peanut butter'. 😂

I just finished my kitchen backsplash working with the Ultracolor grout. Did a ton of research before i tackled the project. Only my 2nd backsplash ever, and it came out great. Some tips for anyone researching what to do. 1. Dump the whole bag in a bucket. Got 2 or more bags? Throw them all in there 2. Mix the grout dry in the bucket with a paddle mixer and drill on low to not kick up to much dust. 3. Work in small batches. I did 3 lbs at a time. 4. Add 3.5 ounces of water per ib of grout. 5. I used distilled water to prevent any inconsistencies in the color. I even put it in the fridge to allow myself more working time on the grout. 6. IMPORTANT....Mix by hand. I used a putty knife. It takes about 2-3 minutes of mixing to get the right consistency. Avoid temptation to add water! 7. After i got all 3lbs of grout on the wall i was able to take my time and check my work before i started to sponge. gave me about 30-45 minutes of working time. 8. Once that was done I went over the wall with different lighting to see if any touch ups were needed. Marked with a dry erase marker, and touched them up when I mixed the next batch. 9. Repeat the process till all done. (Save a small batch of grout in a ziploc bag to use for patches just in case if you can) 10. Take your time. I gave myself the entire day to get it done. No need to rush if you are a diyer. I have to stare at this tile for years to come. Take the day and get it right.

First time working with tile here, thank you for the warning Jeff! I ended up still using it after careful reading, prep, and someone to help sponge the area (though it was entirely feasible to do it on my own). This grout worked like a charm and I had plenty of time to grout my backsplash (3x5' area) without worrying about drying too quickly. I think it probably took me about 30 minutes to grout, wipe, sponge, and clean up. I even bagged up the still wet excess grout before throwing it in the garbage. For reference, I mixed the 10 lb bag with 1 liter of cold water, and the a/c was at 68 Fahrenheit (it's Louisiana in the summer so I was cautious). If you're a beginner like me, are doing this solo and prefer to take it easy and have some leeway, definitely use the Keracolor, however it's totally doable with this grout you just have to be prepared. I bought the Ultracolor grout without realizing the differences to regular grout, so I'm very happy I found this clip when I was researching this project.

Fluffy is right-It's weird as shit to mix, almost like meringue. I used my drill on a slow speed and it didn't set too fast. Getting the consistency right, in small batches, is difficult. My experience with Ultracolor Plus FA (first timer, working solo): My bathroom project had polished porcelain and also river rock on the walls, so the grout had to cover 1/16 up to 1/2 inch... not much choice but to go for this advanced grout. I grouted a test board first just to know what I was dealing with. With very cold water and moderate ambient temperature (20c), pot life is well over an hour. So plenty of time there. On the polished porcelain with the 1/16" gaps, I just did sections I could complete in 15-20 minutes, after which I washed. When the grout was no longer sticky to the touch I knew I could wash it. No issues and it is easy to work with. As a bonus on polished porcelain the grout won't stick on the surface and cleans easily even when dry. On the river rock portion (I had sealed the river rock before hand), there was a ridiculous amount of time to work. I had to wait over an hour for the grout to firm up enough to wash it! So really it depends on your project and your working conditions. Smaller tile spacing will dry faster than large, and I would expect that a more porous tile would also dry faster. If you're nervous like I was, just do a test board first. Use very cold water (refrigerate if necessary), and pick a cool day for the job. If you're grouting natural stone, seal if first. If you're just mixing 2 or 3 lbs at a time, it's easy enough to mix by hand. Honestly for my particular project the grout was very easy to work with, and I would not hesitate to use it again. I have to wonder if Jeff has personally used Ultracolor Plus FA, or was just basing his non-recommend on a few less than careful DIYers. From Jeff's description this stuff would be near impossible to work with. That's not what I found at all.

This gentleman is right about that Ultracolor Plus. The key with anything is reading the instructions before you begin and actually FOLLOWING THEM! I tiled 550sq ft in my home and it was the first time I ever did tiling so I am your typical DYI guy. I did my research because I am a sucker for details, including this grout and he is spot on about only applying a portion then wiping it off. I found removing that grout within or right at 10 minutes was the perfect timing to do so. Eventually I mixed it a little different and was easily able to wait up to 30 minutes without issue. I laid my tile in sections using quick dry Mapei cement in about 50-75 sq ft sections at a time, and then let it dry for an hour or so, then applied the grout while my wife came up behind me wiping it off and it went without a hitch. It was so easy with a helper and patience. If you are someone who rushes, tiling is likely not for you. So make sure you have a helper like he says and you'll be just fine. No need to be afraid. Just READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM and you won't have a single issue. Anyway, great video and coming from a DYI myself, I can say you'll be just fine using the Ultracolor Plus IF you read and follow the instructions! Don't be afraid.

I found this out the hard way a year ago; I thought I was losing my mind but now I know what the problem was. I have done a few backsplashes and other small jobs without issue, but this job at a friend’s house turned into a nightmare. This was the grout he bought. We didn’t tear out the work (felt like it) but I did wear out a pocketknife scraping over half the joints (subway😭). Fortunately, the wide angle of the tanto blade followed the lines and left just the right amount of grout behind…hours later. And the knife blade is no longer a tanto blade.😂 I love your videos.

In my country we have Ultracolor Plus (without the "FA") and it's really easy to work with. Few tips i can give as an amateur that redone all of his apartment by myself and used this - work on small areas like 5 sq./m at a time, don't live big mess when grouting use as much material as needed, when starting cleaning use a sponge that is a little damp you need the water to soften the grout and form your tile gaps properly after that use more dry clean sponge to remove the rest and finally use clean microfiber cloth for perfect finish. You will be done in no time. :)

Jeff, Thank you for your video. My first time grouting I used Mapei Ultracolor FA. I followed some basic steps: mix a small amount of grout at a time, do a small section at a time - 12 sq ft., and remove the excess grout within 15 minutes. I did a small section that would be hidden under the sink as a practice run. I did my bathroom floor without any issues, and it came out fantastic. I was in full control of the grouting, because I was easily able to wipe the grout off within the 15 min. time frame. So, I think a first timer can use it, but with great caution. Thanks again!!!

The Mapei ultra colour Plus FA is a great grout. It's supposed to be waterproof, and is rated for pool and outdoor use. It is more demanding to work with (shorter work time, have to keep up with the sponging) but when it's done right, it looks great and performs great. For a tiled shower floor, it's excellent. I don't know if I'd use it for a backsplash but for a shower, it is a great option if you have patience and are focused.

I need to add one more thing for anyone seeing this. If you bought a new home, or had a tile remodel done, don’t take it for granted that the installer used grout sealer (unless you actually witnessed it). Many don’t bother and you won’t find out that they didn’t until your grout ends up looking dirty and is very hard to clean. Many installers use unsealed grout because it’s cheaper and they have longer working time. They often don’t go back to seal it because that’s more time and expense and they know most people won’t think to ask. If you’re not sure if your grout was sealed, you can usually tell because if you get it wet, it’ll look slightly darker than the dry grout and won’t repel water. Take the time and effort to seal it when you’ve just moved in and your grout will stay nice looking for years. I wish I knew this years ago!

I recently used Ultracolour Plus FA and I think if done carefully the average DIY'er can be successful with it (I am one). Here are some tips I used, maybe they'll be helpful for someone in the comments here. 1. Absolutely, read the bag, two or three times. And keep the bag handy to reference after you empty it out. 2. Work in small batches. I used 2lb (908g) of grout and 200g of water at a time in a small HD bucket, pre-weighed with a kitchen scale and yogurt tubs. 3. Empty the bag into a 5 gallon bucket, put the lid on, and roll it around for a few mins to mix the powder before taking batches out. 4. Use ice water. The chemical reaction isn't linear, once a certain temperature is reached the grout starts to harden quickly. Using ice water helps keep the temperature in the workable range longer. 4. Hand mix the small batches using a plastic putty knife or paint stir stick. Using a drill mixer with small batches creates excess heat and then it's a race to apply and clean before it starts to set up.

Did exactly the same, 2 lb, small batches, paint stirrer, and a wife to keep swapping out the 2 water buckets during the wipe down. Have the clean water ready before you begin and have her get fresh while you grout the next batch. It would go much faster if i could mix it all at once and just grout, but we work with what we have sometimes.

Had bought exactly the same grouting material, the Ultracolor plus; and lucky me doing a bit more research I came across this video and it saved me! The same applies when adding a polymer to grout or even using epoxy grout. You need to get it off QUICK or you’ll spend 5x the time trying to get it off than you did applying. It’s worth using even for beginners IMO - just have your grout stuff and your cleaning stuff ready (5 gallon bucket of warm water, sponge, microfiber towel, scrubby pad) then set a 5-8 minute timer (depending on how warm it is outside, warmer sets quicker) and only mix a small amount at a time (probably enough for a 4’x4’ spot). Once the timer goes off start cleaning it from where you first started, then mix more grout again and repeat. It will probably take 3x as long (a few hours for a shower) but in the end you’ll have a better product!

My wife and I had already planned to work as a team... thank goodness. I mixed the 10 lb bag and started putting it in in one section and then moved across the room so she could start washing. By the time I used about 1/2 of the 10 lb bag, it was hardened in the bucket! Needless to day, We finished the job with half bags at a time. It was like a high intensity interval workout. Mix the grout, put it in as quickly as possible, wash quickly, rest for 15 minutes and repeat. It looks great.

My mistake yesterday, spent hours fixing it afterwards. Thank goodness I only did one side of the wall in the bathroom. Definitely test a small section before attempting a full wall. But to get really nice even lines, I would do it in sections and mix only enough just for that area. Then rinse repeat, my recommendation for amateurs like myself. Oh and set a timer before applying to tell you when you should start wiping it down and work quick, the sponge will fill in the details. I would sponge immediately after applying. Major regrets for not testing on small section before attempting a full wall. Had too much confidence in myself. Wish I saw this video before doing the DIY. Best of luck to everyone and thanks for your vids, amazing job at explaining and entertaining.

Used Ultracolor grout successfully on a recent tile job, Just read and follow the instructions as you should with any product you are using. I mixed it in small batches, don't mix the whole bag at once, I used a weight scale in order to get the water/powder ratio exact for each batch, start with about 1lbs/500g pf powder and go from there, set a timer, apply as much as you can in 10 mins, if you have any left in the pot after that then toss it and get cleaning.

I just grouted my tub surround with this...I mixed according to the package to a T in a 2 gallon bucket then placed 2 gal bucket in a 5 gal bucket of ice water. It stayed workable for at least 35 min. I did one wall at a time. All by my self. It took less than 15 min to do the small walls and probably 15 to do the big wall.

Well, I was one of those people that used the “better” grout when doing 12”x12” marble tile bath surround. I was so pleased with how the marble turned out. Then I grouted the whole thing. OMG! I couldn’t clean it all off. And the longer I took trying, the harder it got. For me, using a utility knife blade did a reasonably good job of getting off the remainder, but hard to get it off in the corners. I was about to start another tile job so I searched KZbin to find out what I had done wrong. This video explained it quite clearly. Won’t make that mistake again!!! Thank you!!!

Wow! You just saved my hide! Just getting ready to grout our newly installed mosaic marble backsplash and while looking at sealants your video popped up. I have this FA grout and was going to get started right now. I would have likely made the mistakes you’re talking about and have been beating my head against the wall in no time. Thank you!

Against Jeff's warning, I used this grout today, and it was my first time grouting. I only did one wall, and I think that was the key. Following the grouting guide, it turned out looking fantastic. You do need to follow the directions on the ultracolour to the letter. I may have used slightly too much water if anything, as the grout was surprisingly runny. I did hand mix 2.5 lbs of it with just under 300ml of water for a 6ft by 3.5 foot wall. I had a lot left over but planned it that way as this video made me paranoid. It turns out I had the 45 minutes of working time the product promised so I wouldn't necessarily shy away from the ultracolour, just be aware you do need to work quickly with it.

wow. I just used the Ultra-color for a grouting project in Florida. I did fifty 12 x 12 fIoor tiles. I guess I lucked out because it worked out great for me. The weather was cool and humid, and I mixed it kind of thin. It cleaned up perfect. Only at the end did one grout line set up so fast I couldn't wipe it level but it was just a few inches of the grout line.

Can you give a quick summary? How long after applying grout did you wash? How long after the wash did you wipe the haze off?

@@cwb124 I just used this grout as well, and have used it before. Basically, you should be applying the grout and then wiping it down within a few minutes. After the 15 minute mark, it's gonna really be setting. My application goes like this: 1. Mix 1/4-1/2 bag with appropriate amount of water. The instructions usually indicates amount of water per whole bag, so just divide that by half or quartered. 2. Grout like normal 3. After about 5 - 10 minutes, I'll go back and wipe down with a wet sponge. I wipe it down so that the tiles may still a bit hazy from the dirty water, but the grout lines are crisp and defined 4. Resume grouting a new section 5. After another 5-10 minutes, I wipe down the new section AND go back to the first section and do another wipe down. 6. Continue to a new section 7. Go back and wipe the second section, maybe another quick wipe of the first one again. 8. Repeat until done, wiping down as needed to progressively clean the older sections. By the time you're grouting the final sections, the first section will be essentially in a finished state. I'd recommend having two buckets of cleaning water and two sponges: one for the dirty fresh stuff, one for the older nearly finished stuff. To put it in other words, this grout basically just requires a lot of wiping and attention after it's set for a few minutes. If you do that, you'll get very good results. Don't be afraid to wipe more frequently than you'd normally. Worst case is you remove some grout and have to refill it; would rather that then wait too long and have to really work the grout due to curing too long. Once you do a couple sections, you'll get the hang of it. Whatever you do, don't let it cure for longer than 15 minutes un-wiped. NOTE, non-vitreous (tiles that absorb water) tiles and to a lesser extent semo-vitreous tiles (like ceramic wall tiles) will need even less time! Really porous stones will have a working time of less than 10 minutes. When in doubt, read the instructions! That's how I learned how to do it.

Thanks for this video, Jeff! We had purchased MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA for our entry floor tile project before seeing this video. It alerted us to the potential problems for us DIYers,so we did more research, and identified the potential failure scenarios. Bottom line is that we used the product and got a great result thanks to you and a few other youtubers that alerted us to the detailed issues. I suspect we would not have been successful had we not seen this.

Much appreciated. I'm doing a pebble shower floor, about to grout it. I called Mapei after having Keracolor recommended to me by a big box store for the pebble floor. Mapei gave me a few tips. 1) You MUST use Ultracolor FA because the pebbles will have 3/4" gaps to fill. 2) Try it on a small area - like 1 foot square to make sure I know how to use it. 3) Follow the directions EXACTLY. Mapei also emailed me a tips sheet to follow.
