When I built my house, I had my architect design a baseboard profile and had the baseboards custom cut. I used the same baseboard to build the crown molding. Yes, it was a ridiculously expensive house and, no, I wouldn't do it again.

The tube algorithm has me locked into a lot of your videos and I must say, your point of view has to be appreciated by a lot. I definitely appreciate it myself. Ok, so I’ve tried Alex didn’t seem to hold up the two times I used it on crown molding. It developed cracks throughout. I live in the south where humidity is relatively high. I’ve since switched to dynaflex 230. This caulk doesn’t crack. Not trying to throw shade, just wondering if the Alex that you used on your project held up.

Bro… once I found your videos, I stopped watching anybody else’s. Not that they’re inadequate, but because you make it seem so easy. When it comes to extreme DIY, you must have confidence. And I leave your videos with my chest out, ready to smack a polar bear. Every single project I’ve done in my home is thanks to you. You’re a god among men. All the tips, the tricks, and seemingly answering my questions as they arise in my brain. It’s unreal sometimes. But the most important thing about your videos, is that they allow me to pass this knowledge on to my sons and daughter. And then they’ll pass it. Your simple presence and humbleness to share all that you know with complete strangers is true love. And the world needs more of it. Please keep doing what you’re doing. I’m just one subscriber, but you’re changing the world. One video at a time. And for that, I thank you.

Thank you for putting all this information together in one comprehensive video that answers all questions: yes, go get an 18g nail gun right now, and a rubber air hose, what kind of sealant to use where and why, back the door trim off the hinge, glue your corners, where and where not to put the nails, how to get spot on mitered trim corners, and use a square to make sure your saw blade is vertical before you start. Thanks for taking the pain out of the front end of the learning curve.

I’ve watched hundreds of DIY vids & I’m sure you know better than I, most are not DIY-er friendly, they are short in time & content, sped up, not narrated and/or certainly don’t go over in detail the tools and WHY. it was your “shout out to those carpenters out there that don’t fill their nail holes” that prompted my comment! Keep up the good work. My only input from the video... at least show people how to cope your inside corners even though most DIY people won’t do it. Also, always nail the flat part on the trim. You can’t properly putty inside the grooves or on any radius. Flat area can always be filled and sanded perfect.

You make a very good point about the "joiner" (a discussion for another day) filling the nail holes in "skirting boards" etc.The joiner should fill the holes and the decorator/painter sand the filler as this gives the filler time to dry.

LOL, I have been using a compound saw for 40 years and understand the saw and its dangers. One day, I was holding a piece of 5 inch wide door casing trim to make a cut up against the compound saw fence same as you do in the videos. The saw was at a 45 degree angle to the right-side. My left hand was on top of the wood and fence holding the trim firm with my hand and fingers on both sides of the fence. I had plenty of clearance from the blade, As I pulled down the saw to make the cut the position of my middle finger was in the way of the blade and I cut off my finger tip at the knuckle with the back side of the saw blade after it past through behind the saw fence. Lesson learned: Triple check for safety of your hand during positioning of the trim cause blade guards are attached to the saw and cover the blade from the front, but not the backside. Was thinking when you painted the trim, watching you dump the paint from the gallon jug to the paint tray, my thought was that if you run two strips of masking tape on the top of the paint can, sort of in a V shape and then pour the paint in that direction you can avoid getting paint around the rim of the can! Sure you might already know and just didn't care but yeah!!! Thanks bud!

I have done a fair amount of trim work over the years and owned and used all those tools but have learned a few little tricks from you, Jeff. Personally, I don't like air tools. The new battery operated nailers are very good and with one decent battery, you can fasten a lot of trim. If your battery dies, you can take one from another one of your tools, (drill, etc.) and use it while you are charging the dead one or just make sure you have an extra battery. This is just my preference. Love your videos, your sense of humour, practical reasoning and work ethic.

I live in London and have a relatively new house - it's only 125 years old :-) I had all the coving and skirting (baseboard) custom made to match the small number of surviving remnants that hadn't been removed. A local specialist company made wet moulds for plaster cove and copied the wood profiles, and remade everything for not much more than the off-the-shelf stuff from the giant hardware store across the road from their workshop. Cannot endorse enough the advice to search for local expert suppliers. You may be pleasantly surprised at the cost and quality.

I usually rough cut all the trim a little longer than needed and lay it out around the room where it's going... for door trim...cut 45 for the side pieces and cut one end at 45 for the top. Then mark the wall on top with the top piece to get the final height marked on that wall. Flip each side piece with the 45 down and mark the finish length to be gut square at 90 on both side pieces. I try to minimize using a tape measure whenever possible and mark to fit each piece...this method works well for me..btw on old work..sometimes have to back cut the 45s a little so they blend together tighter. I do that by placing a shingle in the bed of the chop saw so that the trim piece is a little bit off the table... Just some tweaks I learned over the years...Good vid Jeff

You have some great information on trim work. I am a former trim carpenter and was always trying to do everything as safe as possible. What I noticed was that you were crossing your arms when using your miter saw. The reason being is if that saw ever does something that scares the mess out of you the natural reaction is to move your hands and arms outward so with your arms crossed while cutting then you will most likely move your arm or hand into the saw blade. Always switch arms on the handle when swinging the saw from one side to the other to cut your angles.
@hoosierdaddy47422 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree!! As a 63 y/o lifetime carpenter...when I saw that, I thought to myself, _* Dude, why? Why would you teach any knowledge-absorbing, new to the trades, DIY'ers that it's even SOMEWHAT ok to start using that technique?? *_ Also, why preach about eye safety & the use of safety glasses at the beginning of the video, then immediately grab the nail gun & start using it without? I would even recommend using them with the table saw as well. I noticed that they were never even used once during the entire video! And DON'T EVEN get me started on the part where he boasted about shooting his buddy with a nail gun...then proceeds to demonstrate the risky, dangerous behavior by carelessly showing everyone how to override the safety mechanism by pulling it back & then firing it! Seriously, I mean...WTF was that all aboot??!! Yes, we've ALL done it...but you shouldn't teach potentially dangerous, risky behavior like that to newbies! To use HIS favorite words.... Okay? Right?

Nailing in the flat is easier to fill as you have a reference edge on either side of the hole to fill and ensure flatness of the fill. Also, in wood moulding, the detailed part has been routed and thinner than surrounding areas, hence weaker. If the grain of the board is running perfectly parallel, your hole in the detail will often create a small split, leaving you with this -- shaped hole. Another reason to nail in the flat.

I agree to this, I actually like nailing into the flattened thicker parts than the thinner center parts like many people do.

i also agree but im a electrician, but installed 20-+ houses trim --scarf or butt joints? me scarf --- base and crown
Agree. I have seen many bad advises from this guy in other videos, but apparently it goes well with weekend warriors. I would not want a contractor like this in my house.

What is fun is when you get into big crown molding. Today I did an 8 inch crown. You can't stand it up on the crown stops. The best part of working for a construction company is that there is more experienced people working with you, and an older guy I work with tilted the saw to 33.9° and laid the crown down, and everything came out great.

I think it’s worth stating: get yourself a good quality caulking gun. It’s saves a lot of stress when you can lay a solid bead without much effort. Side note, you are single handedly helping me Reno my entire house, and for that, I am thankful.

When I trim a door head, I do the sides as you do and miter both sides leaving the head a bit long. I check both miters for fit and then place the trim upside down to mark the length perfectly. Sometimes use a sharp pocket knife instead of a pencil

Hey Jeff 🙏. Thanks for having this show. and video on the air. day and night. I am a one man gang. I WORK alone. Because it's hard to find a helper to do what you would like to get done. Eider he is a packman. Or a purana .the fish. Or they on some sorts of jugs . Or alcoholic. last of them all . or just to make a days pay. So I decided to be a one man gang. Do what you can do. I also get a better job done. and I don't don't have to go back and correct what I pay some one to do. Thanks for your teaching skills. Winston Bailey

I took your advice about finding a store that sells millwork versus buying it at a HD or Lowes. I found one just about as close to home as those big box stores. Excellent tip! Not only are their products better quality, they're substantially cheaper. I'll be buying chair rail and crown moulding there and save hundred$. Thanks very much!

Thanks for the comment on finishing holes. The carpenter who worked on my parents' home didn't finish them. The painter just painted over them and a couple of years later, we could all see the nails. Im3 re-doing all the trim in their a 2-story house. I love these videos.

Love the tips here is one more. I have the same red paint bucket and use the plastic liners. I found they fit the gallon size ziplock bags. I push those into the bucket then rubber band them to the edge. This way when I need to break for lunch or for whatever reason I can simply just zip the bag up.

You are working on new construction and it all seems to come together as your floors are mostly level and corners are mostly square. I went into redoing the molding and baseboard on my existing house to find corners were not 90 and the hand scraped bamboo floors we put in made an uneven floor to lay baseboard against. I ended up getting a small electric planer to scrape wood off the bottom and used shims in places to square or level it as I put it in. I was so frustrated thinking I was doing something wrong but there are a ton of tricks to learn for stuff that isn't quite right. There is another KZbinr that does trim work for a living and his corner method is outstanding and saved me so much time coping. He uses an angle grinder with a flap wheel to cope and it works so well and gave me much tighter corners. One point about the miter saw. Even out of the box, you will probably find that your saw doesn't cut square. Another thing I learned the hard way. There are minor adjustments on the saw that allow you to square up the blade on both angles. Don't assume the 45 detent is 45 unless you check it! I thought I was going nuts when my 45s were off until I checked and adjusted my saw. Now I can do baseboard like a wiz but it was painful getting there.
