But you didn’t mention 3” x 3/4” old growth tongue and groove subfloor lol I’m kidding great info. I have to decide what to do upstairs all I have is the 3/4” inch subfloor. That’s a carpets glued to it then 1970s shag carpet. If I can get by with it I may sand stain and varnish

Hey Jeff, Thank you for putting these great videos together. I have several home projects and you're a huge help throughout all of them. I have hit a bit of a snag -- I've ripped out the carpeting from one of our rooms and found out that the previous owners built the walls on top of the carpeting. So I have all of these little pieces of carpet hanging out from under the wall. I've struggle with trying to rip through it with a utility knife (new, sharp blade), but am getting nowhere. I have a feeling I may not like the answer, but if you have anything to share, bring it on. I can take it. THANK YOU!

I've been trying to find well detailed or well explained videos online for quite some time on subflooring, but nothing has come close to the detail and explanation you have put into the subject. Recently, without really wanting too, I found myself in a project having to install subflooring in the bathroom, and I was really concerned about the OSB and the thickness required to handle tile. Transitions between flooring materials have always been my nemesis - tiling a bathroom next to a carpeted hallway, or removing some continuous hardwood (water damaged) and tiling in a bathroom and trying to make it stable and attractive. I've gone for those metal transition strips like you'd mentioned (hooray!), using the tile-to-carpet ( _|\ ) and tile-to-hardwood ( __| ) styles. Getting the carpet cut back just enough and secured under it was a challenge... a couple 70lb packs of tile made a good carpet stretcher though! And glad I didn't grout next to the hardwood for the other bathroom. Planning on maybe some color-matched(ish) caulking where I had to cut back the hardwood to the transition. I was careful and spent a long time sanding to try for a straight edge but hard to do perfectly. Having a targeted discussion on those transitions helps - it always seems to not be included in people's demonstration videos and is difficult to stumble across the right video!

Hey Jeff, you are a rock star, thanks for all the great content! I plan on renovating our main level floor, but I have a third sub-floor type in this 1955 home. We have a wood sub floor with diagonal planks over dimensional lumber joists. We plan on going the vinyl plank route, which means plywood screwed to these planks, but I've found mixed instructions on how to do this right. It appears that my plan should be to remove the skinny oak board flooring, then eliminate any squeaks in the sub-floor boards with screws, then lay plywood on top (not really sure on the thickness required) for a smooth base, and then only screw the plywood to the wooden planks and not into the floor joists. Is that last step correct? Just seems weird to only screw to the planks, but some of the science makes sense with allowing the wooden slats to expand and contract. Everything on top of the plywood, you've covered which I greatly appreciate. Thanks for your help!

My house is a 1930 build. I just started during Thanksgiving break to tear down (the one and only) bathroom. The room is about 5x10. It was tough getting the old cast iron tub out, but I finally got it out. Next break to be able to work it is Christmas break. Now, this part of the house is creekside (not in flood zone by any means), in Southern OR, 5 feet off the ground, on post and pier. No Visqueen on the ground. I had to completely rebuild the creekside wall and put in a new window (above where the new tub is). Outside, I needed to get the scaffolding level first as the big ground rocks made it about a foot difference on two of the legs. Got that done and it fell over 3 times towards the creek, I got it back up and then put the step ladder on top ( I am 5'3, 59yrs, and a sole fixer upper). I got on the scaffolding and attempted to hold the window above my head and screw it in. After multiple attempts (I had a limited amount of time off of work so I really needed to push it, and of course wanting the bathroom and all it's amenities back) of trying to screw in the new window, I realized I could not do this from the outside, I just don't have the strength, (and I am going to have all the windows changed out even the beloved pocket windows later this year professionally when the loan comes through). So I dismantled part of that creekside inside wall that I just rebuilt (I know this is incorrect, but I had no choice but to put the window in this way) and screwed the window to it and put it back together. By this time I noticed that I was in a bit of pain, I called the doc and they suggested I go to Urgent Care. I found out I broke T11 and T12, (a compound fracture) (slight) and messed up my ribs, they still can't tell me what's going on with the ribs. When did this happen? Sometime during my brief relationship with the scaffolding apparently. Anyway, I had to take a little bit of time off for the remod. Which is good as it gives you more time to think things through flat on your back. I had one of my Elders say " you know your not a spring chicken anymore". I now realize this (very hard to admit defeat), but I just didn't really have a viable choice in the matter due a lack of funds. Now, to get to the flooring. Part of the support beams were rotted, so I replaced those and added additional support (overkill at it’s best). I put a sheet of plywood on top of half of the floor while the other half of the bathroom boards flooring ( the one closest to the dirt ground underneath) was ok so I just put 1 sheet of plywood on top of that. (Just to reiterate,) The other side needs two sheets of plywood as none of those boards on top of the support beams were viable, so I removed them). The flooring I chose is the Smart Core Tile (snap flooring) in Glacier Marble. I was informed that I didn’t need any underlayment at the big box store but now that I’ve seen this video, I thought I should ask you. What do you think? I may add a shower for the Slipper soaker clawfoot tub later on, but for now it’s fine. I think I may need to put in some kind of step or two as my short legs are having a bit of a time maneuvering in and out of the tub. Any videos on that, steps for a tub? And high moisture drywall for the walls. TIA

If you have some dips in your slab and you want to address them before covering your slab with a vapor barrier and OSB substrate. Use floor leveling compound. You don't have to "skim coat" your entire floor, you can just fill spots as needed. They come in 40-50lb bags and generally one bag is twice as much as you'll need to address those dips.

When you talk about keeping the plywood clean for tile, in the case of plywood and even a self leveling cement, if it is already dirty from paint and Plaster, is it okay to just give it a quick sand and clean, in order to insure it will make a good bond with the mortar?

You bet! some basements that are older have quite a variance. in those situations it may be hard to get a good result without a huge investment. and building a custom subfloor with sleepers may be required.

I am enthralled with your teaching advice. I am in a rental slightly more than a studio ( tiny 1 bedroom/1bath ) apartment with horrid pink 4" tile on bathroom walls and shower/tub. The 1" Mosaic type on the floor. 76" one way, 61" the other, a decent sized window and door on the long ends. 3 piece. My partner, an amputee, needed grab/assist bars, shower chair and such to shower properly. His Wchair just fits between the vanity and (very old metal) tub. I want to rip out the tile work, and make sure it's up to par instead of 1950-60. I absolutely loved that " whole bathroom a shower" video. Even if it we're just one color/type of coverage, to have that room for movement!! You inspire me! 😊

This is my second video of yours! Binge watching! Thank you for your expertise and sharing your experience and knowledge! We have a thin hardwood floor glued into the concrete floor, no crawl space. We had an awful time of getting the hardwood and glue off the concrete when we did our half bath, and definitely know removing the other rooms(kitchen and entryway) are just too much for us to attempt, unless we can prepare and just lay a new floor over what’s there. I think you gave us some great information, just want to know if you might add anything different to prepare the surface on the wood, different than what you mentioned? Thank you so much! Jeff! Just installed a laminate flooring. Your advice on installing a few rows first and moving them in position and pile on some weight was brilliant. My wall had a 1” bow in the middle and I would have had a hell of a time lining the first strip if I didn’t watch your channel. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Permits: can you talk about permits pro and cons when doing your BSMT. When is a permit needed.

For electrical and plumbing and basically everything because it's considered to be an addition to your hone so property tax has ro go up so u must pull an addition or renovation permit. If plumbing is already completed then u don't beed a permit for that. If the electric is completed you don't need a permit for that but before you close The walls up, call for inspection and after completion so they can assess how much more to valuate your hone and increase the taxes.

This may be a stupid question, but we have vinyl with the “built in” underlay attached to the vinyl boards. I personally think the floor feels too thin just on top of the sub floor. Should I use underlay like you had? Separate from what’s under the vinyl pieces? Thank you for all you do!! 💖

It sounds like you are using a pretty nice LVP that has some sound deadening and padding on the underside of it already. If your floor is nice and clean you'll have no need for a separate underlayment.

Believe it or not some manufacturers will tell you to not put any underlayment as it will void your warranty.

@@Badenhawk to get your best and most accurate answer, take a look in the instructions and see what the manufacturer recommends. The manufacturer always knows best. If you can't seem to find anything in the manual, then giving a call to the company will safe you a lot of time.

Hi Katie, if your subfloor is screwed down it will help. if it is old and soft then consider adding a layer of 3/8 plywood with screws. i did a video about that. the other option is to install the vinyl plank in the opposite direction of the joists. that will help to keep the joints together and no you don't need another underlay, the one that comes on the floor will be fine. as long as your subfloor is 5/8 you should be ok. Some vinyl flooring has an underlay attached to the backside of each piece, would you still recommend placing an underpad?

Just use what it comes with. Adding additional underlay creates too much movement in the product and will void your warranty in the eyes of most manufacturers.

What do you do if the vinyl specifies no underlay, but the floor is over a crawl space and needs a vapor barrier? Would you just have to buy the thinnest layer you can find? Or would a different vinyl need to be purchased in this case?

@@aleksvlad2 Just remember if you're buying vinyl plank it's waterproof. If you're worried about moisture still you can just buy thin layer of poly from your hardware store. It's not foam it's just a poly moisture barrier. Wouldn't add anything of value in terms of a foam underlay, but it also wouldn't void your warranty

In case it helps, I think he mentioned to google "wholesale flooring suppliers". And in answer to someone else's question, he writes, "The brand is less important than the thickness and the rigidity. Every area has different brands names but in many cases are selling the same product. as for an underlayment find one that is thick and more of a dense foam that has an STC rating of 20. that will always be a good one. Cheers!"

I couldn't find wholesale flooring companies nearby but Amazon has much better deals than HD and Floor & Decor. I was hoping to find a thicker rubber pad but ended up buying Roberts First Step because it's $.20 sq ft with STC 67 and R-Value .40. I'm taking that EZ Foam shit back to F&D.
