Yup - it was obvious as soon as I saw it. The other consideration is that this particular barn door set up is probably ok because there is no real air flow between the rooms. There was no bottom guide to stop the door ‘swinging’ in the breeze.

The discs are to be installed at the top of the door to stop it from jumping off the rail track. The two plastic anchors are to be used to screw the bottom guide in case you have concrete floors.

I always watch this channel for advice, and for getting an edge on my home improvement skills. Most of what I know about projects like these, I have learned from this channel. Over the last two years, Home RenoVision has been tremendously helpful. Now, taking what I have learned, I would offer only to install/orientate the bump stop key screws to be on the top, so they’re hidden, and the handle on the left, when opening to the right (handle on the right if opening to the left). I know these guys are very professional, and they are likely installing based on the client’s wishes. I only offer these two cents, has I just recently installed my own barn door in the master bedroom and went through these parts of installation myself.

cant tell ya how many times a GC will have me come out to install these things and there is no backing whatsoever in the wall and they have no clue that that is a problem. I usually will carefully cut out the drywall and implant a mounting board sort of like the one you suggested to put right on to the surface but the way I do it, to keep the door from ending up way too far away from the wall, I "implant"a 3/4 thick piece of wood that can be painted to match the wall color and it protrudes about 1/8" to 1/4" depending on sheetrock thickness ,bevel the edges or ease the edges and it looks really nice clean and professional. personally I prefer not to have the mounts attached to drywall at all even if it has backing behind, some doors are very very heavy and it compresses the sheetrock over time, the rail gets loose resulting in the door dragging on the floor or hanging crooked. I have gone out to a few where this had happened and was hired to fix it. recessed wall plate is the best way to go in my humble opinion.I have also done 1/4" steel plate mounted to the wall secured to studs but this is a pain in the butt ,only do it when the aesthetic of the install requires it.

What changes in the over-the-door installation would you suggest for cement and plaster above my door? My home was built in 1925 but I would love a sliding barn door to eliminate the inward and/or outward swing in a narrow space. Very helpful as alway, your videos are entertaining to watch, but even more important is that I always learn something(s) - often many things. On the handle for the door, I do believe the hardware was correct, the machine nut goes on top and takes most of the force, the lag bolt goes on the bottom and is mainly there just to keep the handle from moving around. Think of the front door to a house that has a handle that extends down to grab, the bottom of the handle often just has a more minor type of fastener primarily to keep the handle straight up and down and down and to keep it from moving from side to side. Thanks again for the consistently excellent videos!

How not to install a barn style door. It’s not safe. With the two bump stops attached to the wall instead of on top of the door, the door can now jump off the track and fall. You should also have floor guides so the door can’t swing out uncontrolled and smack the wall. The swinging door with the missing door stops equals trouble. This door needs to be reinstalled by someone who knows what they are doing. And the handle is mounted wrong. Wow.

Great job, barn doors are becoming quite popular,I have an upcoming project where I’m going to reuse an old closet louvre door,so glad I saw your tutorial 👍🏼 But should the handle be on the opening’s side? Just wondering 🤔 Go back and BUY more hardware?! Are you crazy? They should give you the MISSING ones without charging you,it is they’re stupid mistake for not providing the correct amount.

100% if your doing a small notch like that just use a small chisel way cleaner cut and faster than plugging in a cord and grabbing a saw. Even if your not a carpenter which I am a chisel is a for sure tool any man should have. 😎🔨.

Went to check on barn doors n hardware. In this video Jeff says to measure from top of door to bottom of roller which he says is 2". But I was told today it's 6" because you have to take in consideration the bracket above the roller.

Great video! Very helpful! Could you do a video on power tools for beginners? I'm very intimidated by them to use them but I love building and putting together things. Thanks!

I enjoy your videos to keep an eye on my contractors(new to the business). I'm looking to see an opening of the wall to install a header for dual heavy glass doors. This video alludes to what I need.

I have a question. My landlord is being a little difficult on my door situation i want to install. Shr doesn't want barely any screws in the wall. You only used about 4 screws into the wall itself?

Really nice video but can I please just mention a couple of things I noticed. Please don't use a circular saw like that. It's very bad practice, and not everyone using one like that may be as competent as you. When drilling through anything with a flat bit (spade bit), you should drill through until the tip sticks out the other side. Then drill through from the other side, this prevents the wood bursting out which can potentially ruin a job!
