I went to Timor-Leste in around 2012. They have their own Christ Redeemer statue on a headland in Dili. We dived jaw dropping corral reefs, travelled through the mountains and soaked in a remote Portuguese ruin site that was also a natural hot-spring. Memories ❤

I looked into it a bit and apparently Timor converted heavily to Catholicism during the genocide as they needed to join one of the accepted religions in Indonesia and Islam was uncomfortable since it was the majority for the invader. Pope John Paul II that crypto-fascist fuck, did one good thing by going in 1989 and bringing major media attention to East Timor and the genocide happening there. So the pope visiting is understandably seen as instrumental to the end of the genocide and direct colonialism, it is not really a direct result of Portuguese colonialism. I really hate to hand it to JP2, but the importance of the pope to them is completely fair. What is not fair is the demolishing of homes and the government favoring tourism revenue over their people.
