All About Reading and All About Spelling are the best program for reading. I am seeing my 7 year old can read most of the complicated names and in the Bible and I has been impressed.

We did all BJU press online learning for 2nd grade last year for my one student and while I felt guilty for doing video the year before for doing a few subjects I dove right into it for 2nd grand and will be doing it again for third! We love it! The quality of the curriculum and instruction is outstanding!! (Even if some of the video courses are a bit older) Having just one child, it allows another voice or 4, in the house to learn from and yes, even with one it is a sanity saver!! It’s the ability to teach her to learn and work independently. Also the ability to be the cheer leader instead of the school master for a lot of the time! I get to come in and encourage and work through problems, have fun with the process with her instead of stressing about being stuck in one spot for too long. I can walk away and get laundry done and dinner started and let her work. I am always listening and SOOOO impressed by how much Bible is woven in and how skilled the teachers are. Just love it. (If you are wondering about it there are full sample lessons on their homeschool site.) also, Janelle, I have you to thank for this gift for our student and our family. I started researching it on your recommendation a few years ago when combing your videos for help. One more thing, we have friends that we’re struggling to find a way to homeschool because both parents work, mom works from home, they were able to make this work for them and their 2nd grader too since they could work side by side!

Loved to see you Janelle! We did Answers for Kids Bible curriculum from Answers in Genesis this year with my K, 3, and 5th grader and it was great! I enjoyed teaching and they enjoy learning! We also enjoyed their free Easter unit that we stretched out over a few months. Loved all around! My son really wanted to try CLE math this year and he loved that too. AAR and BJU online are always still our favorites as well. ❤

Great video and resources! Thank you for sharing. My favorite to teach this year Sonlight HBL E. We love reading together and learning through good literature. The most impactful for my kids was Sonlight language arts. They did so much writing and they both made great progress. That was my goal for them for the 22/23 homeschool year and we succeeded.

Oh man, the resources for Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Counseling are AMAZING! Thank you for sharing! My kids did quite a bit of independent work this year because they are middle/high schoolers now. I did enjoy facilitating a Progeny Press book study on The Hound of Baskervilles with them... we all enjoyed that.

My favorite curriculum to teach this year was Bible Truths from BJU. We really enjoy learning the hymns for each unit. We’ve used it the last four years and are trying something new next year though. My daughter’s favorite was Lifepac Language Arts because she could do it almost completely independently. We had been using BJU English 3 at the beginning, but we were having many behavioral problems with me teaching her the concepts. She really disliked the writing units especially. But once we switched, she loved it!😊

I love that you're teaching your kids biblical Hebrew! Such an amazing foundation to study the word! Is that the earliest you've introduced a foreign language?

My oldest did Latin in elementary and some of my other kids did Spanish for a year during the elementary years for fun but high school is when they’ve really gotten into foreign language.

How do you find resources like the Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Counseling courses? I wouldn't even know where to begin to look for those things.
@JanelleKnutson Жыл бұрын
Dr. Barrick, who taught the Hebrew course, spoke at my church’s Bible conference and mentioned his course. I’m working towards being a Biblical counselor so I follow a lot of counseling stuff and saw it advertised. I’m sure there are lots of other great homeschool resources that I don’t know anything about. that’s one benefit to social media…people share great resources and curriculum you would otherwise not know about. 😀

I've got older boys who both skip words or substitute their own words while reading out loud. One of them also tends to read too fast (while reading out loud), which i think contributes to the problem. When you say AAR helps "struggling readers," do these things fall into that category? They can read chapter books, sound big words out, and use context clues to figure out what new words mean. None of that is an issue. Does/did anyone else have this problem? If so, how do/did you fix it?

@@JanelleKnutson We've done quite a few Not Consumed studies. Your opinion on them will be how you typically study the BIble. We are used to going pretty deep into Bible Study, so for us, they are pretty basic... they are also divided by age levels. It's designed for the kids to read through their notebook and read Scriptures on their own, and then you come together as a family later to discuss. I don't find them to go very deep, but they are thorough and are a great introduction! For example, this year my 7th grader wanted to know more about how to pray and having a quiet time. I bought her those studies from Not Consumed, and she really enjoyed them. This summer, I'm combining their Old Testament Faithipedia with the Old Testament Survey to do with my kids.

Do you still use Bju press? Would you still recommend it?
@JanelleKnutson Жыл бұрын
Great question! Short answer is yes and yes! I actually answered that question yesterday on my other social media accounts so I’ll copy and paste here for you… 😊 Answering a homeschool curriculum question… This past school year several people asked me why I wasn’t using as much BJU Press curriculum as I had in years past. The answer has to do with our yearly homeschool goals. Before choosing curriculum for a new homeschool year, I spend time reflecting on the past year. I evaluate what worked well for us and where we struggled. I consider whether any kids have huge gaps that need to be addressed in the upcoming school year. Then I prayerfully set goals for our family and each individual child. Those goals determine the curriculum I will use. My goals for this past school year were best met with a variety of curriculum choices. I did have two of my younger kids using BJU Press video lessons for science and math but the rest of my kids didn’t use BJU materials at all. This upcoming school year has different goals and many of those will be met with the online option from BJU Press. I’m actually purchasing the complete 2nd and 4th grade kits for two of my kids. My 7th and 9th grader will be using BJU Press for 3 different subjects and my 11th grader will be using BJU Press English online. Some years we use a lot of BJU Press curriculum while other years have us using just a few courses from BJU Press. But every year finds me thankful for a curriculum option that emphasizes a biblical worldview and critical thinking.
