This will be my 1st year homeschooling and my kids will be in 4th, 2nd, and PK4. I worked as an engineer for 10 years so this is a whole new ball park for me, yikes! I pulled my kids out of private school because I felt they were not learning - I found I was still teaching them after school everyday and became overload. So I have been piecing my curriculum together all summer. I still am terrified and have been watching so many videos to help me get it together. So thank you, I enjoy your videos!

Hi! I'm so glad you've decided to homeschool! That does sound like a big leap, but I'm thankful you are doing what's best for your kids! Sounds like you've got a good plan. How is school going so far???

I love that you're teaching your kids Spanish! Its such an important language to teach your kids especially given you live in the US. If you're looking for additional play based Spanish resources for the year let me know. We'd love to collaborate! :)

History is my favorite too 😍 Also, I’ve been on the fence about logos cursive. I just hadn’t heard anything about it from others but it’s been in my cart on Amazon for over a month 🤣 I may just take the plunge.

This August we will begin our 8th year! I'll have a 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th grader. I love seeing what other people are doing and what works for their families. We've done Charlotte Mason in the past and still use some of that curriculum. We're very eclectic so I mix a lot of different styles. Some of our favorites are science units from TGTB, Teaching Textbook or Singapore for math (also videos by Mia Academy & Math Antics), Logic of English, and IEW's Fix it! Grammar for LA, and various sources for history including Mystery of History, History Pockets, and living books. There is always so much to feast on and every year the kids like to change it up. Hope you have an amazing school year!

Probably a hard question, but for ages 5, 8 and 10, if you had to choose between masterbooks Spanish and talk box mom, which do you think you'd choose?

My kids are adults now, but during my homeschool phase, I developed a number of curriculums . . . because they just didn't exist (in proper form) when I was homeschooling. I agree, combining family time and education is the best way to stealth-teach. When done correctly, kids don't even realize class has begun. Talk to boys about David's Mighty Men; talk to girls about Ruth's complex journey into the Jewish community (because of her being a Moabite--with a ten-generation citizenship restriction); and ask both of them, how they handle their 1Pet 3:15 situations. That last part only requires quietly listening and sympathizing. As I lay all this out, it's making me want to have another batch of kids. Better stop writing--fast!

Can you share how you use the Draw the World series for geography? Does every student have their own map? How long would you say you work on this for family subjects per week? Once a week? Every day? It looks very intriguing!

I only have one child who is 8. I love BF’s history but I was unsure if the Ancient intermediate would be to advanced or mature for him. We are finishing up the Early American Primary, but I thought going into the Intermediate modern would be too mature for him so maybe this would be a better fit?
@JoyfulNoiseLearning Жыл бұрын
That’s a good thought! From my experience with BFB, I would recommend doing the Intermediate Level for 10-13 year olds. The Ancient History one we are doing is for 5th-8th grade. This is my first time using that level, and my oldest will be 13 :) I think you could stick to the elementary level units. (Around the World 1 and 2, teaching character, us geography, history of the horse)There are several other units that fit an 8 year old. But you do know your child best 😄 Here’s a link to grades they recommend doing the units in: www.bfbooks.com/About-Us/Get-Started

That's great! My favorite way to do Social Studies is with living books. My favorites for 5th grade would be Story of the World or Beautiful Feet Books: bfbooks.com/?tap_a=30494-e48ebf&tap_s=957182-60cc65

Do you think the draw geography series is good for 4th grade level? Do you add anything to it... books etc? Or tie into something you're studying?
@JoyfulNoiseLearning Жыл бұрын
Yes! I use it with all my kids - ages 7-12. We just go slowly and I don't add any books. I just tie it into what we are already reading. I also use the CC Happy Mom's geography songs with it :)
