Loved the pod this week!!! As a former homeschooler ( 1st- 12th) you BETTER make sure your kids are well socialized- like make it top priority. When I went to college the best compliment I got was “you were homeschooled?! You don’t act like you were” 😂

Yes & yes!! I loved when I met people in my adult life that were shocked to hear I was homeschooled instead of the ones that said, “oh that makes sense.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yeah, agree with Jake-- it really depends on how you were homeschooled. I was homeschooled for my whole grade years, started taking community college classes my junior year of high school. I was in many sport teams, church groups, and clubs. It is possible to be just the right amount of home and the right amount of socialization. Learned what I needed at home and now I've graduated college, debt free due to working throughout college, and married happily. Most people never would have known I was homeschooled, in a good way. If you can do it, I highly recommend homeschooling especially in this day and age.

Fun fact… I took AP English for the pure joy of it and the book reports and deep discussions were my favorite thing! And then when the test came I refused to take it 😅 my teacher looked at me like I was an idiot, but I wasn’t about to pay $180 to fail a test for credits I wouldn’t even use for college I most likely wouldn’t go to. I regret nothing.

I have met ultra cool and respectable homeschool kids/grown ups and some super unsocialized acting public schoolers. I’ve met enough homeschoolers that surprised me when I found out they were. Totally burst my bubble on it all. There are “those” kinds of people in homeschool, public, private.

The homeschool and socializing thing always makes me laugh... sometimes because it's funny and sometimes out of exasperation. There are SO many factors that go into it, and people always seem to forget the complete weirdos that do public school k-12 😂. No matter what your kid is doing for school, you have to be an invovled and intentional parent. I was homeschooled grades 6-12, am a teacher, and will absolutely be homeschooling my kiddos.

For the Bible Bee theres certain passages they have to memorize for that years Bee. The judges can then, to my understanding, pick any of those passages. In many cases the people there have memorized books of the Bible. I actually knew the lady judge that yall played, she had so so many passages of the Bible memorized.

I love Teacher Karen saying that the homeschoolers were looked as weird. I went to a private Christian school (until senior high school yr) and didn't learn to mask my ADHD quirkiness. I had to learn quick in public school. That baby shower game is disgusting!! Nope,I would have pulled a Katie & said no I'm not doing that for a pink bag of lotion or perfume. 😂

You! Guys! The roof thing... don't you look out airplane windows just before landing? I know y'all have been to the Coachella Valley - red, terra-cotta, tile roofs. Here in Vermont, a lot of homes have metal roofs (our house), fire resistant tiles. Lahaina, and most of HI homes are older, built from mostly wood... old wood, (like, walls are just sheets of wood), many families keep petroleum products in tanks outside against their homes, and there is often tons of stuff for outdoor activities, like boating, awning to shade during cookouts, etc. But when you don't have a gorgeously lush landscaped yard surrounding your home with red ceramic tiles, you are pretty much outta luck during a firestorm, during a drought. We lived in Hawaii while they were experiencing long term, severe drought; the terrain was barren and brown where it is supposed to be lush green. By the time we left, it had gone back to how you'd imagine Hawaii to look. Lahaina did have a lot of old structures back then. We had stayed at the old plantation hotel off the water. It was great just hanging out there. I so bummed about the tremendous loss of life, livelihood, and historic locales. It is so, so sad to see. Hoping the old banyan tree stays strong.
