My daughter is 2 and a half. I have posters on my bedroom wall and flashcards. We go over 2-D shapes, primary colors, counting to twenty, and alphabet letters and sounds daily. She enjoys it most of the time and whenever she's not feeling it, I let it go because I don't want to pressure her. I just started homeschooling two years ago and I'm still trying to find my way. I have a 12 year old, 8 year old, 2.5 year old, and a 3 month old. I also just created my first unit study about the ocean! I'm nervous, excited, and terrified all at once but we are taking a leap of faith and diving into unit studies this year. Thanks for your videos! They are very helpful!!!

My son is 7 now and autistic, we unschool and do delight directed learning. He has basically taught himself to read in the last 2 months! My daughter is 2 and just wants to "do school" like her big brother! So I'd like to do something super relaxed for her to make her feel involved when he works. In answer to your question, I don't have any regrets with preschool with my aon, because, with his autism, any demands make him anxious so we really just went with the flow of things and learnt about his interests. He didn't want to draw or color, so we didn't do that. Now he loves it! But he loved cutting and reading, has always loved animal and nature doccies, and we used his special interests to teach things like colors, letters, etc. I'm a Type A so it took a lot to let go of the ideas of "school at home", but I have learnt a ton from my little man!

Kindergarten advice next please! lol I'm struggling to make sure I don't overdo it with my 5 year old. She's very good at math and seems to be picking up on reading concepts well too. Which was not the case for my oldest. We are doing " Jack and Annie school" and so far so good with that!

Understanding the concept of opposites is important because it helps a child to compare two different things and develop a more concrete understanding of a particular concept (e.g., hard vs. Soft). Understanding and learning opposites also improve a child’s ability to describe things. You may get a book on this topic here. a.co/d/5okz92P

I have my third preschooler. Preschool is the hardest “school” age for me for sure. I struggle with playing with my little ones imaginatively, but that’s what they need. I’m always looking for things to help me do better with that.

I don't do preschool at all. My kids learn numbers and letters and colors and shapes in their everyday lives, and get to play all day 🙂

Started preschool with my 4 year old this year. It is very much child led and we do things when she wants to. We started homeschooling my 13 year old 3 years ago so we are learning as we go. Thank you for sharing your heart on this!

My daughter is in full time care, but when we are done with dinner we sit at the table almost every night and work on her “reading” which can be anything from story time to phonics to games to whiteboard writing the alphabet etc. it’s the best part of my day and I wouldn’t change a thing! She just turned four and she does a page or two of Abeka Grade 1 a week. Teaching is like dieting, it’s the little choices you make all day every day that add up. No binging! Slow and steady a little every day and keep it FUN. You will be amazed

I love your "teaching is like dieting..." example! What a great analogy! So true!

Sold! Lol this is my 5th year homeschooling and my 4th time around starting preschool! I was dreading repeating the preschool things (hands-on but same old activities) This looks like a fun way to end our last preschool journey! I'm sure my other kids who are kinder-3rd grade level will jump in to join little brother! It will serve as review for them! Bonus benefit is that they will bond through this! Thank you for creating this!

Yes! I so agree. That's what my point of view for middle and high school is now. More focused on "living life" teaching than "looks like school" learning.

Such great advice. I will say I found this to be true for kindergarten as well. My son has learned so much just by following his interests and being a kid. He would be going to first grade and is capable of doing 3rd grade math.

I have no regrets with my 7 year old, I feel like we had fun and she enjoyed it. We did school everyday out in our backyard and now we still try to get outside when we're doing school but it can get a little cumbersome these days, I have two children behind her. My middle child will be doing more preschool with me this year, he's 4. He learns VERY differently than she did so I'm having fun finding ways to reach him. He and I do a mix of flashcards, coloring in "workbooks", and using manipulatives. I haven't decided if I regret not starting sooner with him or not, that will be decided later I suppose. 😄

Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve been enjoying your videos for a few years now and looking forward to my homeschooling journey with my new little one. I love that you mention Magic school bus as a child of the late 80s I feel like I learned more from that cartoon about science than Any public school.

Jessica -- I am homeschooling a Kindergarten student , my son. We have had so much fun doing preschool. Some advice I have for parents is that they do not have to buy all the toys at once -- spread out your activities -- magnet blocks one month, wooden building blocks another, etc. Borrow and trade with friends. Use your library! Also, trust that you have your child's best interest at heart. My child is reading and comprehending second grade reading all on his own so we bought curriculum that supports him, but we also do lots of social emotional help to assist him in this area because he is behind in it. Homeschooling is awesome because we can address all of that. Everyday -- we play a game for one school subject and we do a craft at least once a week. Thanks for all the videos spotlighting educational games and on the scoop where to find trusted resources and supplies. We purchased the Q game on ebay -- they no longer make it! It has seriously changed our little guy. Thanks for all you do. My son wants to write you and Emily a thank you note for making his school fun. Is there an e-mail or address we might use? If not, please know that I am so much more relaxed about homeschooling and I know that I can pass on our family's values and homeschool in our own way and be ok!
