School is not just meant for educational purposes. It teaches you how to socially interact, on how to form relationships, and how to learn about the world outside of your own environment. I personally have never met anyone in my own life who was homeschooled that didn’t wish they had had a more traditional school experience because they all felt extremely behind when it came to things that weren’t academic based. If it comes up later on that a homeschooling experience would help them then that should absolutely be pursued.

@@catherinewardwell2117 They’ll be stoked that they missed out on important dances and events that most everybody can relate to and experience? I’m not saying that when you grow up looking back on dances can hold little importance. But not sharing similar life experiences, like going to prom for example, can be very damaging to some. Shared social experiences are how must of learn how to socialize and share and make friends. People who lack those experiences could very much struggle later in life because they don’t know how to relate to any of that.

@useraccount1582 I am sad about what you have gone through but fortunately while you are definitely not alone, you are in the minority. I went k-12 in public schooling and I had the only things I had to deal with was subconscious racism ( I’m black and I went to a predominantly white elementary school so there were white kids constantly playing in my curly hair and studying me as if I were some alien from outer space) and exclusion in middle school (not from racism but just because I wasn’t necessarily popular) but that’s the norm. And even though we as people would rather not go through these experiences, they prepare us for life because unfortunately this is what the world is like. If you stay homeschooled your whole life it’s gonna be a rude awakening when you become an adult. And this isn’t to shame kids who were homeschooled, I’m just stating reality.

As someone who has been to both public and private schools and given your circumstances. I would HIGHLY suggest private schools. It’s a smaller environment for your kids so they won’t be berated due to being famous. Along with that, you are still getting the school experience that you miss out on with homeschooling. ESPECIALLY in high school. A smaller environment I feel would be safer and better. Whatever you choose I’m sure it’ll be the best for your kids!❤️

Homeschool! There are so many cool opportunities for homeschoolers! All the people who are saying that public school is the best place to be educated probably haven’t seen homeschoolers in action… the kids get taught right where they are at academically they have more natural social interactions out and about as they do lessons, shopping, going to the bank… there are co-ops and community classes, play groups… etc socialization is not a problem for most of the homeschoolers I know! I taught public school before I had kids and they literally have two 15 minute recesses and like a half hour lunch. That is not enough time to really get into a game with their friends… whereas we as homeschoolers meet up at the park, and the kids play for hours… come up with the most detailed imaginative games!

I would not recommend sending your kids to a private school. As 1) Private schools in general shouldn’t be a thing, the fact that some kids, simply because of what their parents earn can get a better education than others is wrong. We shouldn’t be allowing certain kids to have an unfair advantage simply because of money and 2) Lots of private school kids end up very ignorant to other people’s circumstances in life, surrounding your kids with only other rich kids will do them a lot more harm than good. I really do think public school is the best option due to being surrounded by so many different kids with all sorts of backgrounds.

When I am excited or stressed I also feel like things need to be done in a certain way. I don't know, maybe the "properly" of it is soothing. In any case, when my children were younger and things were generally bananas, I started intentionally "practicing" doing things badly. Like, not well. It wasn't enough to know I could do it that way, I had to literally practice. I started complimenting myself on a job "just" done, regardless of all the loose ends sticking out. My children are all grown now, but I'm still practicing!!

Your kids will grow up in a privileged (I know that word it’s loaded) lifestyle and the benefits of immersing them in different cultures through little diverse friends will give them incredible experiences. You will be able to give them a very bright future full of choices that most kids don’t have, so to give them diverse life experience this early it would be very forming. Tortilla Talk: Whether Public/Home/Private do you plan to make music/songs to help them learn through grade school years? Most people do not remember the facts from textbook they “memorized” for test…but I think a lot people can remember some lyrics to songs they have not heard in decades. So to me learning with music make sense.

Taking me back to like 3rd or 4th grade where we sang all the states in alphabetical order... doubt we did it _that_ many times, but dang if in high school I didn't write them all down as I remembered and now sing it to this day as a parlor trick

Hi Colleen! As someone who has personally experienced both public and private schools I feel public creates the must socially well adjusted people. I went to a private high school for a short time which had serious wealth culture and kids with a complete disconnect from those with disabilities. I would also have class conversations where the private school kids would talk about poverty as a theory rather than a real and tangible issue which affects billions of people. I would take into account the student culture at schools you are considering. Often, private schools are great at advertising the best parts, and even better at hiding their issues. The transparency of public school is something you can trust.

i went to public school for the majority of my school years, then was homeschooled for the last 2 because i really started struggling. i think it’s good that i had the experience of in-person school, but now i do online classes and like them a lot more. ofc this is just my personal experience but i do think it’s good to start off with in-person school!

As a teacher, schools mean a lot to kids, it’s their world outside of the home. Schools bring a lot of opportunities that cannot happen at home. The home brings everything else and you guys are great, involved parents. You will also make friends with other parents especially when the kids are in preschool. You can go on outings, etc. Our family is still in touch with a few families that go back to those early days.

Who says it has to be either or? My kids did a mix of homeschool, hybrid public school, and were engaged in many different clubs and sports. As your kids grow, you can tailor their experience and change whatever is needed for them to flourish in what best suits their needs.

You have such a great attitude about schooling…. Some kids thrive with homeschooling and others may thrive in public school! Do what works…I loved teaching my kids and helping them but I looked forward to them going to school so I could have one on one time with their sibling/s … also moms can use a the break! Lol, your twins seem to be making big strides in language! The pediatrician told me that usually if language is on (making big strides in talking…then walking goes on the back burner, the brain can handle one thing at a time….makes me curious to see what your twin’s will do next!

Hi Colleen! I was raised going to private school my whole life and I absolutely loved it! I felt like teachers were way more intentional with me and my overall schooling/education was better in comparison to my friends who went to public high schools. Obviously there are going to be people saying that people are sheltered in private school but I honestly think Its really up to the family and parents on what they expose their kids to and how they walk them through things. There is good and bad in every school unfortunately and whether its a regular private school or private christian school *like the one I went to* there will be stuff that happens. These schools just have a more controlled setting and are able to focus on fixing behavior since the size in students is much smaller than a public school. My parents did a good job with allowing me to experience different things with boundaries of course which I think you and Erik would do absolutely amazing with that! Either way you go you both are wonderful people and have such an amazing family that will support and guide your sweet babies!!!

Hi Colleen: I am so happy to see that you are planning to base each child's schooling on how they learn best. I wanted to mention that their needs can also change. For example, they might benefit from going to a public magnet school that specializes in a more rigorous academic program, or a focus on arts or technology. They may need to do this for only a year or two and then go to public school. Or they may only need to be homeschooled for a while, then to public or private school. There are so many options available, including new online K-12 programs. It's great to be able to customize your child's education!

As far as school goes, I am sure that Erik and you will make the right decision for each of your children when the time comes. 💗 I went to Montessori School and absolutely loved it. And then I went to public school after that and also had a wonderful educational experience because our public high school was ranked as highly as the private schools in the state I grew up in and they offered a wide variety of classes, activities, etc. as well as AP and honors classes so that I wasn’t bored with the curriculum. And all of us with ADHD can totally relate to your analogy of the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie book! 🥰

I strongly suggest looking into Montessori schools within your area!! Montessori is an education philosophy and practice that fosters rigorous, self-motivated growth for children and adolescents in all areas of their development, with a goal of nurturing each child's natural desire for knowledge, understanding, and respect. And I really think Flynn would benefit from the Montessori philosophy due to the energetic, free spirit Flynn has become 💜

I can completely relate to getting good grades but being terrible at tests. When I was little I was tested for dyslexia and I was told I didn’t have it but I was adopted last year and moved states with my new family bc they didn’t live where I did and they noticed similarities with dyslexia and I was tested again and that time I was told I do. My psychologist said that the specialist I use to see thought i was too young to tell and she wasn’t certain but by the time I was 16 my new one was sure. I spent three years in high school trying so hard to get good grades bc I knew I wouldn’t have the ACT scores bc I never had enough time. When I got my first a- I started to spiral bc people kept telling me to try my best, but if my best isn’t good enough why try. Then my fam enrolled me into a new school and I got a 504 plan and it was much better. I can’t thank them enough.

I strongly dislike the phrase "try your best." It's so ignorant to people's feelings and possible anxieties from trying to do their best in something like school. We feel that we can always do better so we always want to try harder and feel bad when we're not always giving everything we have.
@m0t0b33
@m0t0b33 Жыл бұрын
But what did they grade on if not on tests? I mean, in my neck of the woods, you'd get called out and individually quizzed in front of the class (usually about/from homework), or you had written tests... and we had teachers who tried to spare us the anxiety, and teachers who gave zero f*cks, but we still lived and tried to do better next time. If you have a teacher who makes everybody's life a nightmare, you either start feeling defeated, ooor say "screw that" and fight like hell to pass their subject so you don't have to deal with them anymore. And if you don't get good at that subject and barely pass it, at least you get balls of steel out of it... metaphorically speaking, ofc.

@@m0t0b33 my school is mostly project based, so we do posters, one pagers, presentations, essays and stuff like that so it is easier for me to show that I still have learned in class rather than taking a timed test that I could never finished. Just because a student runs out if time doesn’t mean the don’t know the content and everyone learns differently. We rarely have tests, but when we do I get extended time now that I’m properly diagnosed so I do have the accommodations I need to succeed.

@@nomac04 okaaayyyy... good thing I grew up in Romania with a system that catered to everybody... I mean, until the online world started to talk about it, Americans in the great majority, we didn't even hear of ADHD, dislexya and other stuff that too many kids suffer from these days. (I know they're manageable with the right kind of help, but yeah... for lack of a better word, we were all "normal", or at least considered that way). My point is, we didn't need accommodations because we either knew the subjects or we didn't... and if we didn't we got graded accordingly and did better next time or got left behind. And with that system, very few were left behind, and lots graduated with plenty of knowledge... nowadays it looks as though school has become irrelevant for many.
