Activities my preschooler loves ~ -cutting. Not on lines, not cutting shapes, just cutting. -dot markers and paint crayons -stringing beads -all the sensory activities. Rice, shaving cream, kinetic sand, water, etc. -magnets -anything that involves throwing -stacking blocks -playing with dice -sticking stickers Comment activities your child loves, to give other parents ideas!

In The Netherlands this is what we need first graders (usually turning 6 during the school year) to be able to do when they start!

I wish more places accepted that as a reasonable timeline! I just don’t feel like we should rush young children.

Could you make a video for high achieving kids? These standards seem quite low. My son is 2 and does all of these things already and sounds words out and knows which colors mix together to make others.. he knows all shapes including up to octagons etc he can count to 25. Good basic video tho!

Hi Dee! I don’t have as much experience with those kiddos, but being super advanced like that can be as much a sign of neurodivergencies as being very delayed. I did ask my younger son‘s pediatrician about autism assessment because I see some signs, but they would hardly consider it because he wasn’t delayed, and if anything a little ahead of the curve. If assessing for that is not something you’re interested in, my advice would be to teach him whatever he is ready for, even if that’s kindergarten or first grade work, just take a slow and gentle approach so he doesn’t burn out at a young age. I would also suggest allowing plenty of time for whatever he seems super interested in.
