Tom Bukovac heats up the tubes in old narrow panel tweed Deluxe on a snowy day in the not so Deep South….and also recounts the ancient tale of “the basket and the trough” (that’s pronounced “troff” Stringlocker…you know, like one of those things cows eat out of?)

I remember buying a Circle of 5ths chart with the spinning dial when I was 10 years old. Took me a while to figure it out because the Fifths went one way and the Fourths went the other. Eventually it started to make sense. I found another one about 30 years ago that used as a chord chart reference, majors, minors, and all that. After the stroke it was my charting map for familiar chord families and a great way to relearn the common chords and notes between the different keys and transitions. So much useful information all in one place! Enjoy the wintery weekend, Tom. So many memories to be made.🤙

I lived in Nashville for 6 years. I met some great humans, great players and did a lot of gigs. I did not move to town to make it or even get an income stream because the lady worked 50+ hours a week whilst I brought up the kiddos. Just wanted to have experiences while we lived there for fun and meet great players and grow, that's it. I was amazed at how many people I met over 50-55 that I'd never heard of whose house was paid off from gigs. Not all road warriors, many locals too. And many of those cats weren't first call types. I was also amazed at how friendly the neighbors were when I rehearsed with groups. In Chicago you could reunite legends and the neighbors would complain. And in Chicago it was rare to meet a "musician" who owned a house on gigs alone if they weren't famous. However, what also amazed me? The amount of people my age and younger who were full timers that were living in town. But....but. When getting to know a good number of them? They weren't all surviving on the gigs, hell that was rare. Many of them loved only modern country and came from a bit of money, well perhaps even more than many. One guy would have a little house or big apartment, rent rooms cheap to friends and the place was bought by his pop while it was the buddies living there on low rent. A number of guys from well off families up to 2-3 hours out of town that could afford to drive in 5+ nights a week in 70K+ F-150's just to gig. My wife had the same experience at work. Many of her younger and same age co-workers on lower salaries had folks who bought or paid rent on their place. That allowed them to live around town, do okay and make only a modest amount of money but live comfortably. It reminded me of Wicker Park in Chicago, roots rock hipster paradise that once it became "it" the indie rockers you'd meet were all sons/daughters of upper class families who could pay 2K/mo to be hip versus the old "high fidelity" crowd that kept the heat off until late November just to save a buck. For both of us, it was like we were surrounded by a different class of people, sort of upper middle class to rich offspring. Yes, there are many musical opportunities but it just didn't feel like home as most of the artsy people we befriended when we moved to town sold their homes/condos for a profit and moved out! Rock block people, east side hipsters, serious long time locals on the block, friends who had spots downtown, so many up and left in the past 6+ years. After a few years all my friends were the old timers who owned their place. The reason I fell in love with Nashville was I knew a lady paying a few hundred a month living in the west end. We'd visit, walk downtown and on 20-30 bucks you could see monsters players, get lit and get fed. And the gigs weren't all a 2 hours drive apart! There's probably more opportunities than ever but even swinging the security deposit on a dump is probably a hurdle for 70% of the youth. We didn't know how popular town had become when we moved in, it took 3 trips to find a rental and we thought that was just bad luck! Heck, it was probably stupid to leave because our rent was 2/3 of what others were paying in similar comps.

That advice applies to the “real world” not just to professional musicians. I was always taught as a kid in Chicago that you have to have a Plan B and it’s not altogether bad idea to have a plan C and a plan D ready to go to. I would think I was damn near 50 by the time I stopped working second job even though I didn’t need the money. The people you meet on crappy jobs just like Tom said they’re the ones who may be in a position to really give you a great gig when you really need it if they saw that on the crappy job, you did your best and you had a good attitude.
