My brother in NE Ohio has had 3 hives for over a decade now, but it is rare that all 3 are occupied. Almost every other year he discovered that all the bees in one of them have inexplicably left, despite an abundance of food just yards away.

I provided them with free room and board, food and water, then they just up and leave! Didn't even say thanks! Hopefully, the new ones will stick around for a bit.

I have a lot of deer pressure - almost every day some come through - but they have always left my blueberries alone. But I protect the hazels and bush cherries - those wouldn't stand a chance.

The deer just nibbled the tips of the blueberries, the tenderest parts. My Juneberry/serviceberry bushes get destroyed and the Hazelnut bushes get nibbled on quite a bit as well. I plan on doing something about it this year. Thanks for watching!

Well Richard, it looks liked you are developing a second full time job. It's a hobby and fun until it turns into a .................... Then time to reconsider or hire someone to do your hobby. Thanks for the update. Interesting. JimE

There's no fun in that! My plan is to get the hard work done while I'm physically able, then reap the rewards throughout retirement! I've got about 9 years to get things ready, and those 9 years will be over in an instant! Thanks for watching JimE!

@@homesteadohio I can tell you from my experience that after "..those 9 years will be over in an instant!" things pick up speed. Been retired for over 20 years and it seems like yesterday since every day is Saturday. Enjoy and treasure every moment on both side of those 9 years. JimE PS: Don't forget where the saloon is.😉

The bees don't fight each other being so close together?

Nope, I've seen apiaries with hundreds of hives right next to each other. The guy I got my bees from just recommended that I put something near the entrance so they remember which house is theirs.
