I am so impressed by you. I just recently left my high paying job to stay home for many reasons.... health, my family, my aging father who lives alone and has cancer.... I made more money than my husband so this will be a real test for us, but my husband has been begging me to do this for some time, saying that my health and the health of our family is most important. I also felt God leaning on me as well. I only wish I had the presence of mind to do it years ago when my children were young.... but even though 2 are already in college, I have 1 in high school and 1 in middle school and not only can they benefit now, with everything going on in the world learning from amazing women like you now will help me as my children get older and grandchildren (God willing) enter the picture. God bless you and thank you for sharing your journey..... I know it can be hard to share a God honoring, counter cultural lifestyle (I saw your post on IG about the haters), but please note you are a BLESSING to those of us who are wanting to heed God's call to live more simply and to honor the roles he has given us as wife and mother. Big hugs and prayers for strength.

I have a 105 year old farmhouse. We are in the process of finishing my mudroom to be a huge pantry. I have built in cabinets in there already. That has a bunch of my canning in them. Then there was a walk in closet that I turned into my pantry. Hubby put up beadboard paneling to cover ugly walls. Painted it white. Put in white wire shelves that are adjustable. And I keep my bought stuff in there. But I need more storage room for my canning. So my hubby is turning an alcove in there in to a closet with floor to ceiling shelves behind 2 old 24 inch doors I got at habitat restore. So they look the age of our home. Put up beadboard wainscoting painting it barn red. Using a cute country fabric for wallpaper above the wainscoting. Beadboard painted white on the ceiling. Cant wait to get it finished. I am still canning. Been canning since july. Dont know how many hundreds I have canned so far. Not going to starve that's for sure. Been canning for 42 years now. I love seeing all those full jars! Been drying a bunch of stuff also. Hubby is going to make one wall in the mudroom shelves for my half gal jars of dry stuff. Only deep enough for 1 jar deep. No more digging. Happy canning all.

EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! Another way to make sure that you do not get bugs in your storage container, you probably already use for your livestock (especially chickens and ducks) is DE. I use farm grade for my animals and I use it all the time in my house. I use it this way: 1tbsp in gallon containers, 5 tbsp in a 5-gallon bucket, and so on. (just sprinkled in the top are of your container) You should be adding it to the farm animals feed to help them from worms and parasites, etc. I like your system and your storage efforts. Keep up the GREAT WORK that you do!!! GOD Bless.

I’m only 5 minutes in and I have to comment. 😋 We also can and dehydrate sooo much on our homestead. I also have dried zucchini powder on my shelf, along with all sorts of other weird powders made from ground, dehydrated veggies. Your “display” of canned goods is great. Unfortunately our kitchen area doesn’t have a wall I could put a shelf against so our canned hordes (hoards?) are tucked all over our closests which leads to a case of “out of sight, out of mind” for me! Our orchard is also young so I can fruits from Azure.

Amazing pantry tour! When you pulled out the cal/lime I thought you would also use it to make your own masa and masa harina. You are such a busy lady maybe you just don’t have time. But maybe it could save you some more money looking in to nixtamalization. I have only recently learned about it but I was shocked that I had never heard about it before! It’s just cooking the corn in the cal, letting it soak overnight, mixing it up with your hand to get most of the pericarp/“shell” off then rinsing and grinding it up! You can use it fresh to make cornbread/tortillas/etc. or you can dehydrate it for the masa harina. Sorry if you already know all of this I just thought I would share in case you didn’t.

So I just wanted to share a tip that I learned from a customer at work several years back, he was buying a whole bunch of bay leaves and I asked him what he was buying that much Bailey's for cuz it seemed excessive he had a lot and he said I don't have a lot of room in my freezer to put migraines and so I put bay leaves in my flowers rice whatever grains it might be and it keeps the bugs away and so I live in an apartment and don't have a lot of room in my freezer but I don't know if I'm going to try it so I tried it and it works so if any of your subscribers don't have room in their freezer just know you can put bay leaves I put like 3 or 4 depending on how big your bucket is and it keeps the bugs away.

Note: If you are making gluten free flour blends and fight blood sugar issues I would not recommend using potato, tapioca, rice, maybe cassava or anything that will mess with your glycemic index (b sugars). I know that I cannot and need to stick with nut flours, coconut, flax meal, lower carb type items. Love your stock of items. Have a great weekend.

I am a german and I am wondering whether Dinkel=spelt=hulled wheat would make a diffenrence for your gluten sensitive family members. There is real serious gluten intolerance of course but then there is wheat intolerance. This is often unidentified. So rye, barley and dinkel can help out and still contain the glutan that make good breads. My mom is real sensitive to wheat (whole grain or not) but can handle any other grain just fine. Lately she discovered that sour-dough is better than yeast. You can imagine my bread adventures... :-)

All right, 11 minutes in. :) You’ve touched on an area I’m struggling so bad! We have gf family members too so I’m cooking with both gf and wheat flours. I stopped grinding our own flours a couple years ago because I feel I can’t find hours in the day to grind flour anymore! And I feel like I’m drowning in meal prep- making 3 from scratch meals per day, one thing for wheat eaters and one not. I’ve started resorting to store bought bagels for breakfast because I just don’t have the time. Our 8 kids are age 15 down to 7 weeks, btw. I don’t know where you find the time, or what I’m doing wrong!

I find I need a kitchen chore list in the same way I need a house chore list if I am scratch cooking three meals a day. List all your kitchen chores and start giving some to kids. One of them can grind flour for you or do the breakfast prep, make bread, etc. That's what I have to do!

Thank you for sharing! I appreciate the tips with bulk items also. I have been wanting to get oats in bulk to start but if I need to freeze them first I don’t think I can do that yet. We only have the freezer compartment on top of the fridge and a tiny one downstairs (the size of a college dorm fridge or small hotel fridge). Don’t know how I’d freeze 25 pounds of grain very well. But I shall try to see what else I can do!
@oldtimerlee88204 жыл бұрын
If you live in a cold climate, use winter to do the work for you. You can use weather resistant containers (plastic or metal trashcans with tight fitting lids, mouse proof totes in a storage shed, etc.) to hold your dry goods. Pick times when temps will be below freezing for the time needed. Shield containers from the sun, if outside. Shed or carport, for example. If using this, plan your purchases to match seasonal changes, in your area. If you can't use nature's freezing, look into vacuum sealing with oxygen absorbers or dry ice. Some people heat their grains and other dry foods to kill the pests, too. I haven't used any of these methods (I do use a FoodSaver vacuum sealer). So, I recommend that you research the pros and cons of each, to see if something will work, as an alternative, for you. Hope this helps, a bit.
