I am 75 and in an apartment. ( miss my little farm of younger days) But I am doing a no spend January. I will buy fresh veg in a day or so to have fresh veg for the first 2 weeks, then frozen veg. My freezer is full. Thank you for inspiring me. Blessings from North bay Canada.

I'm ready for the challenge this year. I just looked in my freezer and thought of additional items that would keep me entertained so I might make 1 trip to the store for more seafood and oats. The last 2 years have made me reassess the items that I typically keep on hand so this year is more like a use it up/purge for me. I'm consolidating and streamlining my inventory yet again - I'm sure I'm not the only one.

We are going to join your challenge this year. We don’t have a source for eggs or milk so I will have my son bring this in on Monday mornings when he comes to work on our farm. We’ll work out some kind of trade. I’m looking forward to seeing how far we can go!

PANTRY CHALLENGE: What a great way to work through some forgotten items & learn what it really means to be food stable. If we HAD TO do that for real, it would lessen the shock. This year I can do it in a scaled down version. Next year I'll have my gaps, like dairy filled in & do it completely.
@LivingtheHightLife3 жыл бұрын
We are so excited to join in on this challenge! We are an off grid homestead, so we don't have a ton of fridge space for dairy.. We will be allowing $25 for dairy and eggs each week, but that's it. Yikes! It's going to get challenging!

I'm excited to join the pantry challenge this year. We have 3 birthdays between January and February so those could be my exceptions as to why I go to the store, it'll just depend on what their birthday dinner is. we are a dairy family also, so I will have to pick up 3 gallons of milk every week plus replenish the eggs as needed but other than that, I am not purchasing any food from the stores. I'm excited to do this and rely solely on what I have worked Hard to preserve and put up or stock up on.

Traditionally farmers would inventory all their stores on Feb.2. They expected to have at least half of their food (including animal food) left to get to the next growing season. March and April is called the "hungry gap" in some places.

I am a city girl but now live in a rainforest in the tropics. It certainly has its challenges. I have been storing food but not using much as I love fresh vegetables etc. I am re-organizing my store room and pantry but most of the canned goods are spoiled. So with what I have left and my freezer I already decided to jump in with both feet and try not to buy anything for a year!! I have a few chickens and they lay all year here slowing down from time to time, so I am going to barter my eggs for vegetables. I am also going to try to grow basics like tomatoes and peppers then become more adventurous. I am 71 so limited income so now buy much of my provisions from the damaged box area. There are very few special offers here. I look forward to ideas how to use oats and sundry flours.

Haven't quite finished the video yet, but I wondered if anything surprised you in your inventory/prep. I know you're a challenge veteran but was curious if you found anything unexpected. (I.e. something you thought you were out of or had more of something left than you realized. ). We farm but I don't can or preserve. Planning to do the challenge but with permission to buy fresh produce as needed. Shooting for the month of January or until husband asks "is this food" when he looks at his plate. He's a pretty traditional eater so that could happen sooner rather than later! 😉

My goal is to not rely on freezers, refrigerators, and electronic kitchen tools of any kind. Call me the Luddite prepper. But in a SHTF, the electrical grid could fail and anything frozen that cannot be stored outside ( depending on your location and time of year ) would with reliance on a freezer be a total loss. I just started a channel, Sukey the Frugal Frau, and my goal is all to demonstrate and teach step b6 step, methods to run a homestead using hand powered tools and devices. I went to a grocery stooge twice in 2023 and perhaps I can reduce it to zero this year. Like many here, I rely on a local farm for dairy. My concern is that in SHFT, that may no longer be a viable option . We have a couple of goats so I will have to learn to like goat dairy. We can grow our own feed for them and the chickens. We garden on just over two acres, all by hand and on terraces since our land is very steep and rocky. I am able to cut hay and mulch from neighboring fields which I do b6 hand with a scythe. So my homestead life is pretty labor intensive. I am 67 and my husband 56 and this is keeping us fit. We have no children..

Freezer inventory ✔️ Pantry inventory is still in the works. I haven’t the volume of my own canned foods as you (just got back into it) but my shelves are still stocked with purchased goods and we have plenty of meat so other than needing to purchase fresh dairy, milk, cheese and eggs, (we don’t have animals yet) I’m going to try and do this challenge. Thank you for the inspiration and ideas for preparing for the challenge. You are such a joy and a blessing to me and so many others. Thank you.

I totally understand. My wife said the same thing to me haha… And I know you can’t prep for every possible “oops” but how my brain works I think of one guy in particular who bought these big giant rubber tubes, filled them with water and encircled his house as a water tight barrier because of “possible” flood conditions. Everyone thought he was nuts cause waters have never gotten that high… Well, his house was the only house that didn’t flood. And let’s not forget about Noah and all the crap he got. Haha Anyways, I think you’re doing just fine without the input from keyboard warriors like myself…haha have a good one!
