Homestead and Chill

Күн бұрын

It's been over 7 months since we did our first (and only) tour of our new homestead - and we've accomplished and changed SO much in that time! Come along and see the "big reveal" of our new dream raised bed garden space - plus see what's growing, catch up with the barn cats, chickens, and rest of the homestead.
Everything you see here we built and/or installed ourselves. See related tutorials and resources linked below. Also keep in mind that we first learned to garden and landscape on a very modest-size property; the OG homestead was 1/5 an acre or 9000 square foot lot (you can find old videos on our channel). So, basically everything you see here can be scaled down to a smaller garden space too!
Thanks for tuning in, and happy growing!

very inspirational transformation. Your knowledge and experience is incredible. learning a ton. What I also love is that the construction techniques arent too complicated and the material choices are well done. I especially love how you take us along the construction so we can do something similar. Thank you

No maintenance needed really! It's 3-4" deep (fairly compact) and there are 2 layers of commercial grade landscape fabric below to keep out the weeds. If a few blow weed seeds do in on top, we'll hand pick those (but it rains SO little here that should only a concern a couple months of the year). I may bust out the leaf blower on occasion for the pathway under the oak trees since it drops a lot there, but otherwise am not too concerned about a little debris here or there 👍🏼

Hi Gayle! We actually chose to blend two types of gravel together to achieve the color we wanted: a dark green ⅜” crushed rock plus some gray-gold ⅜” crushed granite. I go over it all in more detail (plus photos) in the written post that accompanies this garden update too - which shows all the steps we took to transform the space: homesteadandchill.com/new-garden-reveal/ I hope that helps!

Thank you! We got them locally (Miner's Ace hardware here in SLO county) but a lot of folks make their own similar ones from cattle or hog or panel! 👍🏼

Hello from Durban, South Africa...I've just bumped into your space and immediately subscribed, very informative and educational content...If I heard you correctly, you have Lantana planted in your garden. Are these not consider an invasive plant in your area or I'm thinking like a Durbanite? 😀😀....these plants are on the hit list here as they literally take over and kill the other plants. I spent close to 20% of my mining budget (while I was formally employed) annually, removing and burning these plants. You've given me an excellent idea for starting a garden without "digging"...thanks 🙏🙏

Hello and glad to hear you found us! Lantana grows well here but is definitely not invasive, it is far too dry here as we get a lot less rain compared to Durban.

Hello! I just found your channel when looking into vermiculture and looking at your garden. It's absolutely beautiful!! Wow! Such a well designed space. Did you make your lighted arches? I really like them! Happy gardening!!

Thank you so much Eileen, we run solar powered string lights on the metal arches. However, we didn't make them, we get them at our local Ace Hardware stores. I'll link the lights below if you are interested. www.amazon.com/dp/B07SY7WHZ4?tag=a05d7b40-20&linkCode=ssc&creativeASIN=B07SY7WHZ4&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.2MO9V238VVCG9

Clicked because your design is a lot like what I want to do, on a suburb scale. The difference is I put my artichokes in the ground near the wall so they don't take up raised bed real estate. They're perennials and yours probably won't put out buds this year - one of mine has already started to bud.
@HomesteadandChill

We have some in the ground too, but have ample raised bed real estate to give them a couple prime spots there too 👍🏼 thanks for watching!

Thank you so much and yes we are still vermicomposting! We actually just harvested almost 10 gallons of castings and have been making worm tea as well as adding the castings to our new raised beds. Thanks for asking.

We are in zone 9b as well on the Central Coast of California. I believe the hammocks are from La Siesta, if you want some inspiration for an orchard space, check out this article: homesteadandchill.com/pollinator-orchard-hill-permaculture-berms/
